Wisconsin taxpayers will owe nearly $1 billion per year for the next 17 years to protect their communities from the effects of climate change, according to a new report.
The Center for Climate Integrity released its report “Confronting Wisconsin's Climate Costs” last week. The document estimates the Badger State will need to spend $16.7 billion to protect its communities from the costs of a warmer and wetter climate.
The largest cost will be in upgrading stormwater systems to handle greater rainfall in the coming years. That total is estimated at $6.67 billion, the report finds.
