How does he make the frames around the portraits?

hi, most probably with a cardboard/opaque paper mask in front of the negative. Actually, it could even be made of metal, and serving another purpose : holding the paper flat once the focusing glass is lowered... but that's just my personal guess really :)

François de l'R artisan-photographe: 👍Yes that makes sense. I will have to try it. When you say the focus glass is lowered ... is this a typical feature of these types of cameras? I have an Afghan box.. not built by me... in this camera one can not lower the glass. I have to take the photo holding the paper up against the back side of the glass with my hand ... because of this the image quality looks like it is from a toy camera. Maybe your idea could help me find a way to stick the paper on the front of the glass instead? Thanks for your reply.
