Easily my favorite boss theme in the game. When Aeriths theme started playing tears instantly shot in my eyes just to get wiped away by sheer hype once JENOVAs theme kicked in and everyone used their Limit Breaks.

The most heartbreaking moment of the fight for me, was before the last phase right before Barret, Tifa, and Cloud use their limit breaks. When Tifa comes in and unleashes her punches, the weight and tone of her voice expresses so much of her. She is enranged and saddened of what has happened

I wonder what the implications are of having Jenova's theme slowly overtake Aerith's theme until it fully transforms into it. They could have just done a transition but they basically made a version where Aerith's theme is slowly subsumed by Jenova's leitmotifs

Interesting thought. Thinking about it more, it could be the Cetra being slowly consumed by Jenova until all that's left is her leitmotif, but then at the very end is the main battle theme of the cast. I like to think it's the Cetra fighting bravely until they're decimated entirely by Jenova, only for Cloud and the lads/lasses to finish the job with their blessings thousands of years later.

It’s emotionally intelligent composition AND an homage to OG. We fought to just Aerith’s theme in the original, but this time it’s a much longer fight and it’s not a pushover fight (we had the water ring in OG). This time your grief moves through anger and my GOD do you really need to punch something. Even the difficulty adjusts based on the player’s state. The first phase is pretty easy because I am NOT in a state to be playing yet! But then you join cloud in the hope/delusion and start gearing up for a real fight. Because maybe this time we can save her.

Because Aerith's theme. Like the original PSX game. Storywise, the fight itself is an empty fight. It's basically Sephiroth flexing, humiliating, and asserting his dominance to you. Aerith is dead, and beating Jenova don't achieve things.

Her prayers weren't getting through, killing Aerith is what let's her successfully call Holy at the end, stopping Meteor. And if we assume the Sephiroth with the black angel wing is indeed a future version of him, travelling back to try and alter history, this was a big moment to interfere with. I think that's why we see a black feather this go around - it prompts Cloud to look up and parry the attack. Future Sephiroth tries to stop Aerith's death and... maybe succeeds? Creates a branch reality? It's so confusing lol.

The constant headache flashes is the game switching between what actually happened and what Cloud is seeing. At least, that’s how I interpreted it.

21 years ago I first witnessed Aerith’s death. 12 years old. Her theme hit me like a truck and the tears were flowing. Didn’t help I also lost my sister a month prior. Fight ended as soon as it started as Aqualung one shot my whole party and I was staring at a game over screen crying further feeling like I failed Aerith. Just finished this an hour ago. Here I sat, witnessing this scene all over with tears running down my face again at 33. This part of the song hit again and I refused to stare at a game over screen again. I would not fail a second time.

@@michaelrobosa146 If you listen to the strings in the background starting around 11:29 to 11:50, there's a melody being played that's reminiscent of The Extreme's piano solo portion. It's not 1-for-1 but it's noticeable to me, at least, and wasn't a motif used in any other versions of J-E-N-O-V-A or Aerith's Theme, that I've noticed. The motif returns at 12:33 and can be heard every now and then as the song continues. Then again, I also hear a bit of Force Your Way from FFVIII in some string portions, as well (the transition starting at 17:23 and more subtletly as synth in the background starting around 21:50).

i went through like 50 pots during this bossfight cuz it had so many stages, then sephiroth then you did another sephiroth then ANOTHER and another and it went on i was like 30 giga pots 20 mega 20 ether and 40 phoenix downs will be enough FAT CHANCE when it was done everyone was out of MP, i had not a single pot left, went down to 3 phoenix downs everyone was almost dead the worst round was prol when you have to dmg the wings another thing i found a little sad was that i could not rly enjoy zack as much as i wanted it was just so short to use him, i wish we had like a full chapter for him to get to play him a bit more

Cloud and Zack went into the interdimensional space between the timelines from their timelines. Now rewatch from when Zack meets Sephiroth with this knowledge. Then Sephiroth sends Zack back into his doomed timeline, to kill him with his hands or the Meteor. But Zack managed to destroy Sephiroth Reborn and the white whispers saved him a few seconds before the impact of the Meteor that will destroy his timeline. And he is now in the Rebirth timeline (main timeline of Cloud, Barret, Tifa and the others). Zack awakens in the Sector 5 church of the main timeline. That rift that you can see in the sky is the interdimensional rift. Zack's timeline is completely dead. Now Zack is in the main.
