You talked about that theres always a reason not to chop a Hoya (so just do it)… I have that feeling with repotting (especially when I want to change the mix) “oh its growing a new leaf so I better wait” 😂 I don’t wait anymore with most if them, but some of the slower growing and more finicky ones…. When it looks like they are about to do something, anything…., I aint touching them 😅 Winter propagation… works fiiiiine! I just stick them in little pots of moss mixed with perlite and then they go either in or in front of the cabinet in a place where I see them often so that the moss will not dry out. Most of my Hoyas started that way in fall/winter.. as long as theres light and it isn’t too cold inside the season doesn’t matter. I’ve been putting off repotting my Anthuriums (theres only 3) and chop and extending my Epipremnum Skeleton Key mosspole… For that last one I will cut the stem today and do the rest of it within the next few days…. As for the Anthuriums…. whenever I feel like digging up the larger cover pots. Oh and a rather large Hoya Curtisii compared to its small hanging pot… since it is in the soil it came in aages ago (whatever that may be) I am afraid to uppot it with my own stuff (in case of different moisture retention, dryrot, wetrot etc)….. So am now considering removing the old soil….. but that might damage the roots…. So Ill probably postpone until spring since it is living at the window with no additional light 😅 The best way to educate ourselves about houseplants is our own trial and error… If that study was done in a hot hot area, yes of course the plant might need a bigger pot, just so that it will have moisture….. In our own houses we see best what works for us. If the plant doesn’t grow or dies obviously it didn’t work…. If the plant grows well obviously it works. Its as simple as that. And sometimes someone who grows plants well has a good tip that might work for others as well. Science is nice, but it is also always changing due to newer discoveries 😂 Well done on getting that big Philodendron Brasil off of your to do list 🎉

I know that drill 😂 Damage to your collection, obviously not, thats hilarious. Do they even grow plants? So. Many. Comments. Regarding anthurium, I didn't have much interest in them, but decided to "try one out" a few months ago, and then dove down the rabbit hole like it was my job. It's hard to not get taken in by a plant with velvety, shimmery leaves and beautiful veination, that holds a little bit of mystery (what they look like as babies can be very different to how they look as adults), are hardier than they look, and can reward you with massive, beautiful leaves. Luckily for me, there is a local greenhouse that sells their own props for usually between $25 and $50. There are some that cost more, but I don't buy them. I have a NoID that gave me a leaf recently that is a little over 12" long and 9" wide and GORGEOUS! Anyway, I've really been enjoying them. Keep or sell the trailing inner variegated Carnosa? Keep. I have FOUR! My most beautiful hoya is a huge pot of wide-leafed inner variegated Carnosa. That plant, btw, was one that I procrastinated repotting. I finally did it about six weeks ago. Here's the thing about procrastinating . . . sometimes you find that the chore wasn't nearly as bad as you imagined it was going to be. But sometimes it's every bit as bad as you thought it would be and then some. You never know which way it will go. What I'm procrastinating: ironically, it's propagating. I have a Carnosa 'Motoskei' and an SMS 'June' that are both single-vined, trailing plants. I want to chop and prop to get fuller pots. Full-on avoiding that. It won't be difficult, it just makes me nervous. Pests: just watered my whole collection with nematodes last weekend. DIE, FUNGUS GNATS, DIE!! 😉

I really love them and that was my extent of knowing philodendrons, I guess I wasn’t paying attention to know them. But I give up after my second killed. Now I have two the ring of fire and the atabapoense witch is supposed to get pretty big but right now it has only 7 leaves but doing great. Your monstera siltepicana is gorgeous and you said it get big! How big? and does it gets fenestration? Is it the same they call Salvador? I did like that Hoya repotting. By the way where you sell you plants, Hoyas. Thank for all you do and don’t apologize for losing your train of thought, I can say we don’t mind and I am sure a lot of other people agree with me. Thanks
@soberplantguy20 күн бұрын
Thank you! As for the siltpicano, mine was about seven feet long, and only got tiny fenestrations. It must climb to get the mature form (which is not my preference for this plant). The Salvador is supposed to be different, buy I haven't seen one. I'm taking the winter off on plant sales, but hopefully will have something more convenient for everyone by spring, since I've been doing it through email. Cheers from Iowa City!

Hey Dave I love your content and your conversations! You truly inspire me and uplift my day! I have a question about your decursiva and your runner because I’m experiencing the exact same thing, where do you make the cut and what do you do with it to root it or plant it or what? Lmfao 🤪 I know nothing! I just planted it one day into a rectangular self watering container, when I remember to fill up the reservoir that is, and it is now growing out of the pot about two feet and trying to put out a leaf? Any advice would greatly be appreciated Dave and if you don’t want to that’s totally okay too lol thanks for always sharing and being kind and being yourself! Lots of love ❤️, Ginger
@soberplantguy3 ай бұрын
😁I most definitely do not mind! I made a cut about 1/2" above the last leaf I wanted to save in the pot (what you saw). Then I sacrificed the long runner, and made two cuts, about 3/4" on either side of the node. Does that make sense? If not, send me a pic and I'll mark it up for you: soberplantguy@gmail.com Cheers from Iowa City

Hi Dave I just subscribe yesterday when I found you and I like your perspective of growing plants in general. I like in Illinois an not long got hook on Hoyas even I had rescue a carnosa from Lowe’s for over a year that was just living but doing nothing until I figure that she was I a big pot for it so I reported and stated to shoot new leaves and growing great. So I had bought some that are doing no so good( small leaves) and good my crimson queen( new leaf and steam with some tiny ones ) etc. So if you have any recommendation for them or video I will be grateful. Now about a new Chanel on fashion and beauty I think is GREAT and you should give it a go . Everyone has opinions about it and good to get advice when you don’t feel secure about yourself specially when this one is older then you and maybe I didn’t had an addiction but I had a rough childhood. Also a question(sorry for the lengthy message) notice you pot your Hoyas in terracotta or the other material( I forgot the name 😂) and you only use plastic on your transplant material? Is that right is it because of you 3 substrates ?

Hey, thanks for coming on board! The other pots I use are basalt, and marble granite clay. I use plastic for the props, or a few others that really need to maintain higher moisture. Be well into the New Year, and see you next time

*Had* is the appropriate word. I bought a buy two, get one free deal, and they went downhill FAST. Really impressively fast. I salvaged and restarted, and salvaged and restarted.... Finally I had two vines that seemed reasonably happy. Went to repot this summer, and they were riddled with root mealies. I think the plant is awesome .... but that one was not a great experience, to say the least 🤣

I am not at all doubting you on the Carnosa names inner variegation /outer variegation and the common names. Is there a link you can share telling more about this? I keep hearing about and I totally agree the made up name thing is getting way out of hand just to sell plants. thanks so much for sharing if you have a link. I have been googling for it and not coming up with anything.

My Hoya Coronaria has a rather thick (3/8"-1/4") stem going straight up. I assume I place the stem close to the edge of a tower trellis and try to wrap it around the outside edge as best as I can without breaking it, right? Then try to wrap the next vines while they're still pliable?
@soberplantguy3 ай бұрын
That's a Hoya I'd be growing on a horseshoe trellis, given its typical growth pattern. It's defiantly going to be easier to manage, at least I think. But otherwise, you have the right idea. Just never, ever try to force a vine into submission: You. Will. Not. Win.

I'm starting to feel uncomfortable, as when you do a video on a topic it is oddly specific to what's going on in my plants lives. I went to my first plant swap two weeks ago and acquired two Rapidaflora Tetrasperma cuttings which I potted directly in "soil". They seem to be doing well as they have yet to wilt. I bought a Siltepecana yesterday (even though I'm on a plant ban until spring). I will prop the vines. I also found a variegated Phalaenopsis Orchid, which was a wish list plant. My Brazil needs re-potting but it hangs in a West facing cold winter window and I'm not sure if it's such a good Idea. Anyway, fab cozy vid.
