Question: if you have that synthetic one… would you use it again? Roots seem to like it but repotting is seems hard

The miltoniopsisses love it indeed. I see a lot of root growth going for that syntic. But in this case I had to much syntic in the pot, so it was way too wet even for self watering. And I now use the sort strings of syntic, these where the long strings that makes repotting even harder. So I do a mix of 50% syntic and 50% pumice, and that works great for me! This Miltoniopsis was one of the first that I tried syntic on. So there was much to learn!
