huh, that last one surprised me I'm guessing why the rpm is higher even using the flat one without the lid is because the air is being pushed around in a circle it's causing a sort of feedback loop, since the jar is keeping it from getting pushed outward for the most part
@danielscott45142 жыл бұрын
I doubt it's a feedback loop exactly, but yes, I think you're right in that the air could be moving with the flat impeller in the closed jar, allowing the impeller to move more freely. The other possibility - if the tips of the impeller are close enough to the edges of the jar - is that it's working like a ducted fan and it's preventing air turbulence at the tips. As far as I know, that only works when the tips are quite close to the inside of the cylinder (or jar in this case) though. Wikipedia has a pretty decent run-down on ducted fans: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ducted_fan

Suggestion: Try to put a motor with a gearbox in a cylindrical shell, so that the axis extends from its center. Attach a flat propeller with an angle of attack of 90 degrees to the axis, and compare the speed of rotation outside and inside your glass jar. And compare the speed difference with and without vacuum. The idea is that if the propeller is inside the jar, it will spin the air inside it, so the spin rate will be much higher than outside the jar. And the vacuum shouldn't make much of a difference. The cylindrical shell around the motor should allow the air to spin more freely in the can. An additional idea: Try making another similar coaxial propeller spin, purely by spinning the air in the can with another prop. Call it a pneumatic torque converter :) Also, why not to throw some paper pieces inside of the jar to see them flying around by the air stream That should be very interesting

@@coastaku1954 Lego my eggo waffle.
@CaptainMug2 жыл бұрын
@@coastaku1954 You're actually wrong from a literary standpoint but I'm not gonna argue with you, however to explain. Basically Lego is a adjective of a company name I.e. Apple. If you have 3 iPhones you don't say I have multiple Apple's, you say I have multiple Apple iPhones. Same goes for Lego, you can have multiple Lego Bricks, but not multiple Legos. Combining multiple catagories of an adjective can sometimes result in a plural. I.e. It's Lego Bricks, Lego Parts, Lego Wheels, which together can be shortened to Legos with the plural being multiple objects refering to Lego. You're refering to a proscribed term, which means that people generally don't want others to use a certain word while it's still all within how a language is supposed to work. We can take it even a step further then since it would be LEGO (i.e. the company wants people to call it LEGO instead of lego) but I'm not going into that right now. Thanks for you reply anyway

I believe the wheel in glass spins faster because it is spinning the air with it, so the air drag is far less, whereas in the open the air is essentially stagnant. A minor difference, but I’d imagine it’s enough to account for most of the effect
