I am building 2 story house. Structural engineer said no need to put rubble foundation, only plint beams are enough. But my contractor is telling me to go for rubble foundation. finally I decided to go with rubble foundation+plint beams after looking at your video. Please make a video of how to design iron bars for columns for 2, 3 story houses.
Well explained. I have been watching almost all videos you have done and I I learned lot from them. I have a question, I have a commercial building which is going to be a 3 storied building. In which our contractor used only tie beams (which are almost 2 feet tall and 9 inches wide) but he never used rubbel foundation. So after watching this program I am worried if he has done it right. Appreciate your advice.

Appreciate your participation here.No need to worry about that as you have used a bit deep tie beams. 2 feet(24") is a large height and hope that was used to bearup the wall loads and hopefully the contracter may have taken those loads to the foundations as well. Actually, the thing here is, if you go for deeper heights of tie beams and if you consider the loads to the foundations, you can avoid the rubble.

Dear Sir, I'm from Nuwara eliya. Seven years ago I built my house. The problem was I didn't have enough money to build the two storey full house ( Ground floor 1098 square foot & first floor 1098 square foot ) I built only 425 square foot ground floor. I built only 425 square foot reinforced concrete slab out of 1098 square foot reinforced concrete slab seven years ago. Now I have enough money to complete the ground floor. But an engineer says if I bond the other new 673 square foot reinforced concrete slab strengthen of the reinforced concrete slab will go down & cracks will happen & there will be water leakage through the joint. Are they true? Will you please kindly let me know the procedure how to avoid the loss of strengthen & cracks & water leakage? Please reply soon.

Without inspecting them at the site and without proper analysis we can't say something for sure. What I can just say is, Old and new concrete bond will be bit weak. So we have to chip the old concrete to be joint and apply a proper bonding agent before concreting. If it's a wet area water proofing is highly recommended. Using that type of procedure, you can get a certain success.
