Of course, the most important tool of a roofer is a hammer. Which in our time has been replaced by a nail gun. A device that significantly increases the speed of stuffing. But no matter what you use, the requirements for nails are always the same: only ruffed or screw nails with a head diameter of 8 mm or more. No screws and staples for a construction stapler.
Now let's take a closer look at tools for cutting roofing material. A construction knife familiar to everyone with a classic trapezoidal blade will not work here. It is not able to cut through a hard coating with basalt dressing. Therefore, we change the usual blade to a blade - a hook. And an ordinary construction knife turns into a roofing one. It is much easier to work with such a tool: the hook cuts the edge of the material and moves on unhindered.
And in order to safely and conveniently cut the material with a roofing knife, we will use another tool from the arsenal of a professional roofer: a guide bar, which helps to cut the material directly on the roof, without the risk of damaging the underlying layers.
You can't buy stuff like this in a store. It is made independently, on a manual bending machine, from a metal strip. The length is a little over a meter.
The tool allows you to cut not only tile shingles, but also lining and valley carpets. The bar has a groove along which the knife moves without slipping to the side. Nail holes with torn edges on the reverse side, you know, are not for aesthetics. They help to fix the bar on the material. (beat)
Let's see how our guide bar works. We put it under the shingle of the tile, set the direction and cut it off. This results in a very clean cut with no risk of damaging the bottom shingle as well as the underlayment. The plank is great for working in the nodes of the valley, gable and junction areas to the pipe and walls.
However, not everything is so smooth with a roofing knife when it comes to double-layer laminated shingles. Cutting it is quite difficult due to the high resistance of the glued layers.
To do this, we will use a more comfortable tool for work: a roofing guillotine.
This is a common laminate cutter sold at hardware stores. The only modification that will have to be done is to sharpen the blade so that it can easily cope with layers of bitumen and basalt powder. Let's try…. Like a hot knife through butter. Very fast and convenient!
Dealt with the tools.
Well, now a few words about the requirements for a solid base for laying shingles. A very important and responsible question.
Flexible tile is an elastic material that repeats all the irregularities and defects of the base. The more carefully the base is prepared, the more evenly the tile will lie.
As a solid base for laying tiles, you can use moisture-resistant oriented strand board OSB-3 or moisture-resistant FSF plywood. Alternatively, a dry edged board can be used. In our case, we used OSB-3, which has the necessary moisture resistance and strength.
The thickness of our plate is 9 mm, the minimum allowable. Of course, the thicker the OSB you use, the better.
The plates are attached to the power crate of the boards.
But not entirely. First, they need to be cut into 5 parts.
