Being able to describe the emergency, instead of sending a blind help call is where this device is worth it's weight in gold. All of it's many other features are gravy. Thank you, this is the best description of an emergency call that I've seen yet,. Get the Garmin Explorer (red, not yellow), or the InReach Mini2. There's nothing better at anywhere the price or weight.

I once spent 23 days backpacking in the San Juan ‘s. It rained for 18 of them. If you were lucky it didn’t start raining until the afternoon, if you were unlucky it rained all day. That made for a long wet day

Good story, as an emergency medical specialist. It amazes me how people are unprepared and my experiences along the way being the “Trail Angel” for the occasional hiker who didn’t prepare the unexpected. Glad you were able to render help.

Incredibly informative. Being a nurse and formerly EMS, I’ve seen and helped people on various trails, even experienced hikers, and have run into trouble myself. I never had a Sat phone tho... your video has convinced me that it wouldn’t be a bad idea... Thanks so very much for sharing!!

Great lesson about being prepared, even on a day hike into the backcountry. Also, a good example of how well the Garmin Inreach can help out in a situation like you experienced. I bought the Inreach Mini before last summer's trip out to Colorado and although I never needed to hit the SOS button, the text messaging between my wife (back home) and me was reassuring and great for our peace of mind.

Good informative video. I have an inreach also, never used the SOS. But my wife likes getting her updates that I’m OK. I certainly agree with you about not using it the SOS if it is not a real emergency. I keep hearing stuff all the time about people who call for help when it’s not needed, such as on a half mile hike from the car and they get lost so they have to call for help to get rescued. Ugh.

The Inreach is one of the best pieces of of gear I have. I used it this last fall for a lady that had fallen in White Pockets AZ. I was able to give the sheriff a good location to land the helicopter near by. I never leave home without it now.

Thanks for that story, I’ve been looking at that exact garmin for a while now, definitely picking one up. The Ice Lake Basin hike is no joke, did it last September. It was clear beautiful blue skies when I got to the upper Basin, 30 minutes later I was in a 40 mph ice storm. Luckily I was camping up there so I could get out of the weather, but others in shorts and T-shirt’s were kind of screwed until they could get back to the tree line.

Well, well. Very nicely done, Dana, as always. Even while you spoke I started reliving the many missions I participated in with VMRG. I don’t remember you telling me you did that too. Bravo! My KZbin profile pic is of a mission searching for a lost backpacker. He did not make it. It was thought that he had an acute case of altitude sickness. He carried 2 handheld GPSr devices (to avoid being lost) and no cell phone against the advice of his friends, saying that there was no service where he was going. Unfortunately, he was wrong. There were many spots along his route where he would have been able to shoot a text and possibly a phone call. Moral of the story, use all your available resources. The InReach is a great product for sure. Covers many bases as you related.

Great info Dana. Not to insult anyone but you must use your head, plan for the unexpected, hopefully you won't need to use the extra gear / provisions but why not be safe. I remember a few years ago on a backpacking trip in the Chisos Mts. in Texas my trip down the mountains on the last day was a thirsty one, thought I had enough water. There was no water to be filtered in these mountains so i had to live with my mistake. Look forward to the next video.

Hey Dana, my wife and I like to explore as many remote places as we can. We have a Tacoma that we've outfitted for remote, self sustained travel. Of all the gear we have 1 item is our InReach Mini. I am retired military (Armored Corp) and am very familiar with being properly equipped and trained for the activities we engage in. Like you, I climbed for decades and was also involved in SAR as a search member. All this showed me over the years the importance of doing it right, having what you need, being prepared and most importantly, knowing how to use the equipment and having good judgement. On last years trip in Utah we rescued no less than 4 people who were in a bad way due to lack of preparation and equipment. Good to see you still out there and oh, have you picked up some leashless tools yet?

Thanks. We are on the same page. Just got back from ice climbing in Ouray today. The tools will be delivered Tuesday. We will be back out Wednesday. LOL we are moving up in the world.

Interesting story, well told. I am not surprised at all that many people are totally unprepared for long hikes in the outdoors. I once climbed Longs Peak, a serious, possibly dangerous peak in the Rockies. I saw people going up in sandals and shorts, with no warm clothes. At the boulder field, there was a strong wind and the temperature was just over freezing. These people were expecting a picnic, and were now standing shivering, still hours away from being warm. Total, total ignorance of the reality and completely naive expectations. I like your use of the TV-style 3 camera set-up, switching between them to change the perspective. That's a clever way to make a one-man video much more professional.
@danahollister40845 жыл бұрын
Thank you really appreciate it. Your story is a good one . I think we can learn from that. Glad you noticed the camera shots. It's not that easy to do but I think it makes it more interesting.
@deannilvalli65795 жыл бұрын
Yes, it definitely works and makes the film more professional and better for the audience, whether they notice consciously or not. If I had more cameras, I would use this myself!

Thanks Dana. Good thing you had your wife with you ;D

Thanks. It is always a good thing that she is with me! I am not sure what you mean about the helicopter rescue. Other than they are super expensive. Another good thing about the Inreach is the ability to text to keep loved ones up to date on your progress. Handy little tool.

I realize this happened 2 years ago, just watched the video. But as the old saying goes In failing to prepare You are preparing to fail. Just because you are going for a simple day hike doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare for a worst-case scenario.

This sounds crude but did you get charged any money for using the device for someone else ??
@danahollister40842 жыл бұрын
Worth asking! It depends on wnat plan you have. Some include it and some don't. We have a certain number of text we can send for free. It did end up costing maybe 20.00 or so if I remember right. Pretty small price to pay.

@Dana Hollister so what happens they bill whoever they pick up ?
@danahollister40842 жыл бұрын
@@masterofnone11 No we own the device so if we text we get charged for the text. Once the paramedics showed up and they decided on a helicopter that was on them. The only extra charge for us is the amount of texting.
