I think Slugde and Snarl were picked for this show because they there left out of Animated, where only Slag and Swoop appeared alongside Grimlock. As for the ship, it was probably pre-war, when neither Autobots nor Decepticons existed. We know that Rescue Bots were not seen since early war until the events of the original RB series, and this ship was most likely meant for a team of Rescue Bots to find.

Grimlock, Sludge and Slag were created first, while as Snarl and Swoop were created second after the first group of Dinobots were temporarily mind-controlled and possessed by the Decepticons.
