Rescue in the L.A river sends us to help an unusual animal and kittens too!

Our work requires us to improvise all the time and this time we had an unusual animal, and also help from the SMART Team. When I was 10 years old I was walking down our alley taking a short cut home. I heard a noise and stopped and listened. I went over to a metal garbage can where the noise was coming from. I looked inside and saw a small rat trying desperately to get out. He tried climbing the sides several times. I felt horrible for his desperation and didn't really see a rat, I saw an animal in distress. I tipped the can over and he scurried out and away. Many will say "Oh my God it's a rat why would you do that ?" My simple reply would be, when one has compassion and empathy it's not a selective process. The heart dictates the action. If the rat died, and the cats were hungry, they could see the rat as a food source, as that is natural. The poisoned rat would then be consumed and the cats would be doomed to death from poison.

@The Observer There's also something against the rules of youtube...in fact, it's the first thing on their list of no-nos. Asking for "support" is just a non-verbal ask for donations. When you get there to watch their videos, they'll have a sad story about how much more they could do if you donated. So, I report all the spammers. There are two on here who are regulars. They have notifications turned on, because they're here posting for their channels as soon as HfP post anything. So, they get reported. KZbin ask you to send a URL of their comment and whose channel it was on, and if they keep it up, they won't have a channel for anyone to visit anyway. It's not done by reputable rescuers, but it is done by cash-grabbers.

@@Narujen exactly. I was watching a video the other day about a rescue shelter in Iran and they saved a dog that was going to be put down by some villagers because it was sick. I bet if you talked to those villagers they would say the same thing: it's spreading disease so it should die. Poor dog was treated at the rescue shelter and survived and the fear was completely pointless.

I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for you and everyone you work with. But that has increased tenfold because you tried to help that rat. I've been rescuing fancy rats in the UK for over 10 years now. A few years ago, I rescued a Gambian Pouched rat. Sadly, she died only a year later (she hadn't been treated well). But we now have another one, and he is a delight. I adore rats, and you didn't give it a second thought, just saved a poor little rat from further pain and anguish. Thank you for that.

Sick animals are important to the food Chain as they are the first to go when it comes to food which is needed for the survival of birds, and Millions of other animals: if every rat was saved then that would mean the extinction of millions of other animals. If you truly loved animals you would understand this. What do you think is in dog food and cat food? It’s other animals. That’s the cycle of life

DONALD, you're beginning to irritate me. You've made the same comments here more than once. You're what I call an "armchair pontificator."' The rat rescue was righteous, whether it was poisoned, injured or diseased. No wild animal will let itself get caught, unless it's in serious trouble and can't run or fight back any more, and you didn't consider what caused this. This is an urban environment, the most likely cause was poison, and they couldn't just leave it there. It needed to be secured for its own sake, and the sake of the entire ecosystem and the human community. Please, read my earlier comments further above, okay? Educate yourself just a little more. You're obviously not in any related field such as ecologist, biologist, epidemiologist, wildlife rehabilitator or vet. You do understand a few things, but your thinking needs to be taken a bit further with more education. And by the way, instead of criticizing their decision... can you imagine the viewer uproar if they'd just left it there to suffer and die? They not only chose the better of two imperfect choices (which doctors call Occam's razor), but the only compassionate one. This wasn't in the wild, where both the wild predator and wild prey would both be doing their "job." In L.A., poisoning needs to be added to the differential diagnosis, right at the top of the list... I guessed poisoning right away. It would have died either way because of the anticoagulant it ingested, but they gave it a kinder, more humane death and also prevented any secondary poisonings or potential community health impact. And they left the diagnosis and disposition with the vet, don't forget that. I've seen live webcams where nature was allowed to "take its course," showing things that might upset some people's delicate sensibilities, resulting in a few extremely upset, unstable viewers who tried to locate the webcams, trespass and interfere with nature. They had to close down those webcams for good, and find new secret locations in the future, because of a few unstable individuals who refused to accept nature. I support what they decided to do, wholeheartedly. I sometimes like to say that "some people love animals, and some people just like the IDEA of loving animals." Some of the decisions we need to make are hard, even unpopular for some laypeople to understand. HFP did the right thing, on so many levels. They have a dangerous, high-risk category job (rescuers, rehabilitators, zookeepers, animal control officers) and you ought not to second-guess them until you pick up some more information... at which point I would hope you'd change your mind and see they did the right thing on every level. And in terms of ecosystem overview, one sad rat rescue won't change the ecosystem one iota, anyway. I would have done the same thing, including its euthanasia.

Louis Robertson thats absurd. If anything, humans are the invasive ones. And for an example, windows kill more birds yearly than cats or any other animal. Feral cats do not live long without Human intervention,5 years or less usually. That way of thinking is the reason so many cats are needlessly euthanized. I absolutely love that you stopped to help the rat. It's unfair that rats have such a bad reputation, but they feel pain and fear and suffering just like all animals. Domesticated rats are clean, loving and affectionate! Sad he didn't make it, but it was a better ending for him than a slow death. So happy you could help those gorgeous little kittens. Seems they got used to human contact very quickly!

Thank you for saving the rat too, my brother once caught a rat in my nans lobby, at first he put him outside but then he saw the rat had hardly any energy and dragged himself to a puddle to drink. He said the rat isn't well I should ring the vets. My dad scoffed and said just leave it, my nan told him to kill it. He took no notice and took the rat which he by now had named Roland to the vets the vet had said it must have been poisoned and put him to sleep.
