Unfortunately many of them probably got crushed by the overhead steel beams. But those who didn't, would have been terrified as they sunk deeper and deeper into the dark, cold abyss. Assuming their cars fell facing upwards (which is unlikely) it's possible their seatbelts could be undone, but most modern seatbelts lock if the car is upside down or on its side. The airbags also almost certainly deployed, probably knocking some of them out. Truth be told, if you did manage to survive all that and your car was in tact survival is slightly possible (as long as no water is coming in) but the chances of that happening are so low, almost zero. It's almost not a search and rescue anymore. It's a recovery operation.

biggest problem would be the wreckage of the bridge falling on top of your car, if the car is not completely crushed or ripped to pieces along with you, getting out of the vehicle and reaching the surface is the hardest part here. lets speculate more on these folks gruesome deaths
@Orcinus19679 ай бұрын
Its called hypothermia. I suggest you read up on how long you can stay in cold water, or out doors, without a ton of body fat or a survival suit, before dying. Hint: Its 7-15 minutes in water that cold. Water temperature was reported to be 45 degrees Farenheit. Further, the body has a natural reaction of gasping when entering frigid water. Many people aren't ready for that response and inhale water, and drown. If anyone survived the long fall in a car..300 feet? Wasn't crushed by wreckage, managed to get out of the car which may or may not have its electric system knocked out by water hence the windows don't work, if they weren't stuck in their seatbelt and or the airbag wasn't wrapped around them, then they would have 7-15 minutes to get out of the water and would have to be warmed back up immediately, in order to survive. No need to imagine swimming around for hours. Even a wetsuit wouldn't help you for very long.

This is a standard bridge design and is used in thousands of bridges around the world, most much smaller. Everyone *knows* that destroying one support will bring down the entire "truss". The truss is the open steel framework. It is no different from a rope tied at each end, and pulled taut between the ends. Removing one post pulls the entire framework loose from the ends and it all collapses. This is *not* a design flaw! Absolutely every bridge in the world will fall if you knock out the posts holding it up. The amount that falls is dependent on the design, e.g. a suspension bridge will lose everything suspended if one tower is lost. The same applies to this bridge.

Also seeing a "tiny" semi-trailer truck pass over the bridge a few minutes before it collapsed and the just visible flashing lights from the road crew trucks that were filling in potholes really put it into perspective. I hope they survived the fall into the water but that's very unlikely for a number of reasons. This is a major tragedy. RIP to those that were lost.
