Recently the sanctuary welcomed in our first birds, three senior male zebra finches. We felt their previous cage was too small to allow them to thrive in, so we upgraded them to one much bigger. Of course we'd have preferred to give them a large outdoor aviary to fly in, but that's not currently possible for us, though as with all our residents we're constantly thinking of ways we can improve their lives.

I have had zebra finches since 1998 and they are soooo adorable! I really like how they develop their own "tunes" when singing. Can you tell them apart?

Hey, amazing cage! Bigger is always better and practically any animal, no matter the size and how many there are, thrive in a large environment. Though I do have SOME nitpicks such as the mirror in the cage, there’s nothing wrong with showing your bird their reflection OCCASIONALLY but if it’s in their cage where they can access it 24/7 then it can cause some territorial behavior as they don’t understand why this “other bird” won’t leave that specific spot/leave them alone in certain parts of the cage. It’s hard to explain as you have multiple birds instead of one so I don’t think they’d be THAT a aggressive in the cage with the mirror but birds (no matter how smart they are) can’t understand that their reflection isn’t another bird, so they’ll identify their reflection as being another bird which, like I explained, can cause some issues with territorial/aggressive behaviors which can psychologically affect the birds in a negative way. Also as for the bells, I would be careful since the metal clapper in the bell has a little hook which, if the bird tries to move the bell to make sound via the metal clapper inside, then it could actually fracture the bird’s beaks or tongue, maybe even eye if they can get in far enough, so I recommend pipe bells or measuring cups that either prevent the bird from accessing the metal clapper (pipe bell) or just get rid of the metal clapper and bell as a whole but still make a sound that birds will like (measuring cups toy) Other than the mirror nitpick and the danger of the bell this cage is really good! I love how you added a natural perch in there as dowel, sand, plastic, and even rope perches aren’t good for birds if that’s the ONLY perch(es) they have (it can cause them bumble-foot or if it’s a rope toy/perch, they can swallow the fiber which can cause crop impaction) *Even with that being said, the mirror and bells only pose a slight danger to your finches and if you TRULY don’t notice any severe problems with your birds that are caused by the bells/mirrors then you CAN keep them. Though I’d recommend hanging them outside the cage for the finches to play with once they get free-roaming time, I also recommend to put a few shreddable toys in there to keep them entertained. Keep up the great work! 😄*

How old are they? I think they can live up to 7 years old. Judging by their plumage, they don't look old. Do they all sing their own unique song?

They're between 5 and 6 years old currently. They don't seem to have particularly unique songs but it's hard to tell as they prefer to all sing over each other 😁

They don’t really need females tho, unlike many other un-neutered/spayed animals, most bird species can coexist with the same sex.
