I'm surprised to find that the actual opening with the music is only about 1min long. I swear it felt forever watching this as a kid.

Bro same. So picture this, a young 5 year old autistic kid (me when I was 5) watches this. Never knew what minutes were. This felt so long it was like a fever dream. I remember stimmying my fingers like my face was the camera to that and I don't even know how I did it XP.

It’s because of the pacing and buildup from the beginning - all the closeup shots of the bugs - and the SCALE of everything once the music kicks into high gear - the mountains look so far away, and then you see the little house, and you think it will surely take a few minutes to get there. It’s all using your own brain against you

I watched a video explaining how time is relative. Ex. I am 36 and my daughter is 7. 10 minutes for me in my mind is 50 minutes to her. I have 5 times more of my life behind her than she does. That is the basic concept for why time feels like it is moving faster as we age.

This intro is a fantastic piece of expertly crafted animation. Starting out deliberately low-key, slow, and close-up to set the mood of being in the dangerous Australian outback, then pulling up and out for a wide shot of the wide-open spaces, and then suddenly taking off with the film's fantastic score and a fast moving fly-in to convey that this will be a fun, energetic, and dramatic adventure film.

Just as a little technical note to add to this awesome intro, this movie was the first time Disney worked with Pixar to produce a full-length animated feature. This movie is very experimental, and is sort of a landmark animated film. It was like the 2nd or third Disney film to feature cel-shading, (the first was Oliver and Company) and the first film ever to be fully digitally produced (it was printed onto cels). The entire film was colorized using computers to fill in the artists scanned lines, and several 3d environments-- including this intro and the city scene. If you go back and watch The Little Mermaid, you can immediately notice the HUGE jump in quality from Mermaid to Rescuers. It's mostly due to the tools Pixar developed to help bring visions like this to life.

So I recently read about the history of Disney's Digital Ink and Paint. This opening was literally designed just to show off the sequencing capabilities. From the frame we fade up from black, until we zoom all the way into the window and it fades back to black, that was a single sequence, with every single layer pre drawn, rendered, and stacked in the digital multiplane camera. Organizing a shot like that with actual cells would have been a ridiculous apparatus.

I remember to this day these many years later being absolutely blown away as a kid to this opening sequence. Martin Freeman as Bernard is stellar casting, but I honestly think this movie would be stronger without the mice. What I love most about this is that this animation is VERY good DESPITE the fact that nothing in this sequence is AT ALL necessary for narrative purposes. They didn't animate this sequence because they needed to, they did it because it was cool. I wish Disney did more art like that these days. It does serve storytelling purposes, but you could get those purposes through other means that weren't as much work or as cool.
