Rescuing a baby flying-fox found on the ground; this is K'Ching

K'Ching is a 3 week old abandoned baby found on the ground in a classy area of town. The lovely MOPs (members of public) found her, bundled her up in a fleecy top and school hat, and took her home where they called for rescue.
Some of the aiming of the video is completely pathetic (I hate these vid glasses but I also forget to adjust the aim so it's not just their fault). I have left the footage in because it tells part of the story; it also gets better.
So late in the season, this little one is such a delight; when you have 10 babies to feed 4-5 times a day, though you love the babies it becomes work and a time juggling responsibility to do all which is needed for them.
When you have one baby in care it's a delight of senses; the greys smell delightful; the visual delight and personal interactions and entertainment never fail to make me feel good; the work for one baby isn't particularly onerous and between Maggie and myself we can easily cover all the feeds and still continue the other commitments in our lives.
I love getting the really squidgy babies who look fine then crash overnight to be scarily iffy, then the somehow pull through and start to sort their body processes out so they end up on the recovery trail.
I was really worried that K'Ching was going to die overnight: she was very dehydrated and took forever to do her first wee, which was only 3 drops after 4 subcutaneous fluid boosts, and she made the most scary noises for which I couldn't figure out the reason; if they were pain or distress. She got analgesia and finally went back to sleep and stopped crying or screaming or whatever she was trying to communicate.
... and in the morning she had the most amazing case of bed hair and was all squished and ruffled, but she was alive and opening her eyes, and so cute.
Lots more subcutaneous fluids were required to get her to finally pee more than 3 drops, but if you watch the progress in the video, she drags herself out of squidginess to become viable.
You have no idea what a relief this was; I was even promising that Maggie would come over and she could pee onto her boobs (!!! yes, really).
It's late into day 3 now, and little K'Ching has survived 50 hours and is a survivor. YAY!!!
I called her K'Ching because she as from the classy part of town and I love the sound of cash registers...
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. It’s an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the amount donated and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Welcome to Megabattie, Screwdriver I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

Hi Yamilethcordero Thanks for the compliment; I'm just Meg, not ma'am. Welcome to Megabattie, I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions. I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos. The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too.

It's really pathetic videography in the main - poorly aimed, blurry in places, but as usual, my focus is on the bat and the rescue rather than the videography. It's so much better when I can take footage when Maggie is over here and all I have to do is concentrate on the footage and capturing the best of their face and behaviour.

Get the kids young, give them a good experience and you might have a convert. I like to make peoples' experience at rescue pleasant; if they don't have a good experience they are less likely to call again in the future. I had one lady who had a bat in her backyard but she didn't call because her last experience was poor; finally her daughter came and saw the bat and called for help but the daughter was scarred by the previous experience so she was very prickly and when I asked questions she was hostile like I was criticising her. The poor juvie was horribly electrocuted with flies crawling around her and in her wounds which where ghastly. And the maggots had hatched and were eating their way into her. It didn't matter what I said they were really hostile with me because I was "being critical". What I was actually doing was asking questions of her to ascertain how long the bat had been there and what it needed but even a 10 minute response time by me wasn't good enough. She said last time the rescue organisation didn't come for a bit for 24 hours so her mother was forced to watch the bird die in her backyard. So her response was not to call for this little bat so she could watch it die in her yard as well. Sometimes what people do makes no sense to me at all.

I remember the time I got dehydrated ( um sun sick while on a long bicycle ride) The first aid was very similar. And I just felt rotten for a few days after. I imagine bats go through a similar stage, as well as losing your mum, and falling ? who knows how far, and being kidnapped by big pink hairless giants. I'd be whinging loudly too. Great respect for your work Meg.

Yes heat stress and severe dehydration are killers and it takes days to recover with the right treatment. It takes days to address the electrolyte imbalances specially if, like with bats, you can't get regular blood biochem tests to see what the imbalances are. It's just that her cries were unusual and more constant rather than just random crying - mum, where are you? Come get me. Why have you left me?

I could hear the exuberance in your voice when you unbundled her the morning of day 2, and she was still with you and looking better (and not crying anymore). I read the video description before watching, so I knew she was going to be a survivor, but I could tell how worried you must have felt when she was no longer making any sounds, and you didn't know if she had died overnight. It must have felt great when you saw her looking back at you that morning.

@@Megabattie @Megabattie Yeah, I know you live it in real time. This video hit me particularly hard, for some reason -- not in a bad way, because she survived -- but I was kind of worried myself as I was watching you check on her that morning, even though I knew what to expect. I don't know why, I guess I could just feel the emotions with how you filmed it. @Megabattie
@Megabattie Жыл бұрын
This goop really works to reduce bruising by breaking up any tissue congestion and clot collection. It's called Hirudoid. They use it in hospitals on inflamed IV sites and large areas of bruising. Hirudin is a naturally occurring peptide in the salivary glands of blood-sucking leeches (such as Hirudo medicinalis) that has a blood anticoagulant property.

No she didn't have a micro fracture, and they don't cling onto their mums with their wrists either; they hold onto their mums in flight with their teeth on her nipple (yes, OUCH), and with their disproportionately large feet which have extra little barbs under their claws for the first month or so to snag onto mum's fur. I am reliably informed that bat mum nipples have very few nerve endings, which, in view of the baby's needle sharp backwards curving milk teeth, I feel is an evolutionary blessing.

Julie; Welcome to Megabattie, I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.

They can take 10% of their bodyweight in fluid in one go, and it goes into the very loose skin in the scruff of their neck. K'Ching required 5 sc injections before she started peeing. And has continued to have at least one injection per day for about 5 days. It takes a long time to fully rehydrate a bat if they're really dry when they come into care.
@Hel7100
@Hel7100 Жыл бұрын
About the dehydration thing, if I understood, you had at first to give the baby serum before giving her water. Why? If she received water from the beginning, would that cause any lesions in her organs? I've been following your baby rescuing videos from last year and I noticed you await at least for one night before feeding the babies. Always wondered if it was to make sure if they hadn't any internal injuries (aside surviving the first night, of course).
@Megabattie
@Megabattie Жыл бұрын
I give the babies glucose gel, because glucose is important when the bat is in shock. They need fluids and glucose, but they don't need to be fed orally until the adrenaline has worn off and the I can see how they are. Oral fluids don't work in shock because the blood supply to the stomach is reduced (because in an emergency situation if you are being chased by a dinosaur you don't stop snatch a few berries to munch while you're running away); the blood supply is routed to the places where it's needed - brain, lungs and muscles. The stomach is secondary and digestion isn't needed at this stage. Because the blood supply is reduced, if they do eat or drink something the absorption is reduced. The risk of aspiration at this stage is high, that they kind of vomit it back and inhale it. I don't give them water either, until they're rehydrated; they need electrolytes and glucose not straight water; it's all a balance. When the adrenaline has worn off and they're sore and sorry and miserable, then I can see how they actually are and if they're up to oral intake; in the interim they're supported by the injectable fluids and the glucose. When I can see if they have a head injury or internal injuries then I can start to work out what's best.
