That's because the game was an equally rare instance of NOBODY being satisfied with development and everyone agreeing that changes need to be made. What also helped the game was that outside of Capcom, Playstation was hitting its best regarded era of games (FFVII came out the year before, MGS would come out later on in 1998, and RE1 along with Crash Bandicoot kickstarted that period.)

Can we talk about how this thing even “leaked” though? Apparently a group of RE fans pooled together an insane amount of money (thousands) and bought it from a collector. They form a team together, with the goal of finishing the game and releasing a “complete” build to the public But someone on the team became frustrated, defected, and threatened to leak the build they bought. It takes away from it being a perfect game which RE2 remake easily would have been had it done the scenarios and all enemy types justice but still it's easily a 9/10 as it stands. Apart from that however RE2remake succeded in literally the most important role: it revived and redefined survival-horror. Of course RE7 came before it but RE7 wasn't as impactful in the horror genre it was more of a stepping stone for the series in particular, a step in the right direction after the disaster known as RE6. And while there were some horror games even before RE7 they were mostly indie titles and pretty unoriginal titles too as almost everyone and their mother tried to copy and paste kojima's cancelled P.T. leaving Outlast as the only impactful horror game for years to come further cementing that survival-horror was done for. RE2 remake however is THE GAME that changed that , THE GAME that you should look at and take notes from if you want to make a AAA survival-horror game and that alone easily makes it a god of a game and more importantly a worthy game of the title Resident Evil 2 as it managed to do in 2019 everything the OG did back in 1998. Bring success for the series, redefine survival-horror and make every horror game developer take notes

Oddly enough, Resident Evil is full of stories of Capcom gambling and it shockingly pays off. Resident Evil 4 is probably the most well known due to it being considered one of the greatest games ever with a scrapped build becoming a new beloved IP, Devil May Cry, but Resident Evil VII: Biohazard was another such gamble. Despite reception, Resident Evil 6 made a lot of money and they could have continued that direction, but instead they went out of their way to make a more intimate project to appease fans and the results of that ushered in a new golden age for both Resident Evil as a series and Capcom at large.

I wanted to say that CarcingenSDA's runthrough of RE2 with director commentary from Kamiya himself is also a great source of info on the game's development as he actually gets asked some interesting questions and provides a look into developing for Capcom at that time. The one most notable thing is he talks about making the game rather fondly as if they were cherished memories despite the struggle to make the game in his 20s. The funny part is that he actually mentions he forgot a lot about what went into the game because he mentions that encountering something he felt was original in the 2019 remake turned out to be from the original game.

You know, while it’s tough hearing about the struggles that can people face when making a piece of art, its also really rewarding to hear that people learned from their mistakes and made something better in the end. Granted, struggling to achieve ones creative vision should *not* be the standard, but learning to see faults and deciding “OK, how can I make this better?” is something that should be encouraged. I’m glad this was a, mostly, positive story this time around. Speaking of troubled productions that eventually paid off, I feel like “Pokémon Red & Green” would fit the bill, considering their long years of development and the numerous issues that Game Freak encountered in getting the games made.

Really great video. Quite the fan of how you'd use clips from the game to illustrate your narration in light hearted ways. (Leon limping through the RPD underpass as you talked about Kamiya taking criticism to heart was a particular piece of gold.) The production history of RE:2 always yields some interesting tidbits. It's somewhat sobering to learn that both Mikami and Kamiya didn't have backgrounds in the horror genre. Yet they are both credited with producing some of - if not THE - most iconic video game horror of all time. I've also got to thank you for detailing Okamoto's role in the production of RE:1 and 2. I thought Kamiya was the sole force behind the decision to to a full redesign. Wow, if not for Okamoto's gut instinct and industry insight we'd be without the profound gaming experiences we have today. (Though I do question his view on RE 2 - as it existed then - suffering because of its lack of narrative connection with RE1. Sequels without overt connection to the originals aren't exactly frowned on, especially not these days. But then again, I'm a sucker for Classic RE legend. And such a legend requires the presence and influence of the characters made infamous by the originals.) I like to think there's something of a moral in the story of how RE2 came to be; your video very much affirms that. The attitude of perfectionism is not inherently a bad thing, it's worth the time dedication in order to yield greater things. The DNA of the core idea for RE2 remained, it's just that the superstructure needed an overhaul.

The ironic thing about Noboru Sugimura is that he not only was the man who helped define so much of the Resident Evil universe starting with RE2, including making Umbrella into the true big bad it was for years, his final RE game before passing in early 2005 was 2003's RE: Dead Aim, the spin-off which wound up explaining why Umbrella eventually died out before RE4 (in short, the events of Dead Aim made Umbrella unable to continue paying off its various legal defenses, so it went bankrupt). In essence, Sugimura died alongside the villain he originally defined in RE2. Also, Dead Aim is legit a really fun game (especially with a controller/GunCon combination), & easily the highlight of the Gun Survivor sub-series.

Nice, more McMuscles gameplay in the future, new channel subbed! As for new What Happened subject material, PS1's Vagrant Story might be interesting. Hope you are well!

Vagrant Story, eh? Wasn't that game a critical darling, but received a cold reception by the public? A cult favorite (And for good reason!) but largely ignored in its own time?
@DeviousX13X2 жыл бұрын
@@HighPriestFuneral All true, and if I recall correctly there was also something interesting about it's development. It was supposed to be a different game or something along those lines, from what little i remember. Hope you are well!

Do a video on The Culling by Xaviant. It was literally one of the first battle royale games that kickstarted the genre.

Speaking of RE, seen the demo of the demake of RE 1 for the Sega Genesis? They turned it into an isometric top down shooter.

And if you all want to know why Sugimura jumped ship from Toei to Capcom well, ask for a What Happened of Choriki Sentai Ohranger because HO BOY is that a story!

With Final Fantasy XVI finally getting a new trailer, a What Happened on FFXV would be great, since that has one of the longest and most tumultuous development cycles I’ve ever heard of, and no one can decide on whether it was worth it.
