Bit of a small thing but thank you for having actual subtitles that aren’t the auto-generated ones! A lot of KZbinrs overlook them and it’s very appreciated as a viewer with audio processing issues

I'm so sorry! I can't imagine how annoying/disappointing it is to find a good KZbin video topic to watch, and then can't because the subtitles are wrong!
@maromania7

Probably less "overlook" and more "don't have time." I've had to spend a solid 5 hours of frustrating work wrestling with some basic edits for subtitles on an 8 minute video, AFTER auto-timing already did the timing part for me. The thing fights you tooth and nail, constantly teleports you around the document, will randomly delete other segments while you're typing, and just generally messes with you. It also doesn't disable the shortcuts while you're typing. Like Spacebar, a shortcut to make the video start and drag you forward.

I think the main reason that people blame stuff like the actors or the testers, or the composers for things that they ultimately aren't completely responsible for, is that it's easy and simple. They see an issue, and they see a role that's doing the thing they have an issue with it and they assign blame right there. Because unless we've got someone on the inside, it's hard to know who the actual problem causer was. Even in your explanation you put the possibility to several positions like the director, developer, publisher etc. And it's likely even more complicated who has responsibility for the issue in reality.
@technoboop1890

In terms of bugs its not the playtesters' fault, but it certainly isn't the developers' fault either. Its the fault of management for pushing games out too early or not assigning enough resources to fixing bugs.

This is the fourth video I've seen on your second channel, coming back to you after I discovered Ceave Gaming long ago and eventually departed for a while. And... all 4 really hit me to the core. The Wind Waker one, the Outer Wilds one, the Hollow Knight one, and now this. They all did so because they all reassured me in the values I myself have been gathering these past few years, becoming my own person and being happy about it. So it truly feels nice to see it all thrown my way like this, reassuring me in the fact that this isn't wrong in any way... They're beautifully crafted videos, and I'm really grateful. Onto the TotK one!

15:10 on the other hand the problem with this is that they do it too often and it becomes predictable. Kinda like GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire, you do not know what is going to happen but after a couple of books you already know that whenever characters set out to do something like an assault on a stronghold or travelling to a different town they _will_ fail and their plans will fall apart. So with you having to backtrack a lot through areas if the game you will inevitably end up bracing yourself for what's to come, probably even looking for what can go wrong and thinking about how beat that challenge. This then has the opposite effect of what this design is meant for, rather than building tension and a feeling that nowhere is safe, not even places you cleared of enemies already instead it creates a kind of routine that stifles tension and reduces rather than enhances the impact of the escalation.

39:11 I disagree with this entirely. Which is strange considering I agree with you on almost every point you made in the video up to this point and I even agree with all your points in your ToTK video. I think it's both the "person in charge" and the VAs responsibility to bring a character to life, which in turn affects the overall product. The person in charge certainly gives directions, and how much direction is different from director to director, but within that direction an actor still has a fine bit of wiggle room. A positive example of this would be Robert Downey Jr. with his portrayal of Iron Man. A large portion of what he says isn't in the script and most, if not all, of his body language isn't given to him by the director. That comes from his passion for the role and his skill as an actor. The same goes for Brad Pitt and how he eats food in most of his movies. It's a small thing he brings to his characters to spice them up a bit. No one tells him to eat all the time. A negative example of this would be the old joke about how Bruce Willis never turns down a role. He doesn't care about every movie he's in, so his portrayal of some characters suffers, but that's out of the director's control if Bruce doesn't feel like bringing his A-game. They've already cast him and they've already signed the contract. In Ada's VA's case, you could blame the director for hiring her in the first place, but I don't think that should shield her from criticism. You wouldn't shield Leon's VA from praise, chalking it up to the director doing a good job casting him. Just as Leon deserves his praise for his good performance, Ada deserves her criticism for her poor performance. Neither can 100% blame their success or failure on the director. Like most things, no one thing can take all the blame for the, let's say, "Ada Incident." There are multiple factors at work, I'm just saying we shouldn't exclude the VA from those factors. Am I saying we should bully every bad actor? No. I'm just saying it's okay to say if people are bad at their job. Hell, I'm bad at my job. Is that my boss's fault? Maybe some, but not all. At some point, I have to take responsibility for my poor performance. Just not right now, I wanna finish the video first. The point is, if we don't point out mistakes, how is Capcom, or any game dev, supposed to make the games better going forward. Nintendo isn't going to do anything about weapon durability if we don't talk about it and let them know. Like you did in your other video. The same applies here.

I wish you had talked more about the combat differences between the original RE4 and the remake, since they play in significantly different ways. The Electric Underground made two great videos talking about this and how many of the changes are really counterintuitive to the game design of the original, and there is not much consideration anymore about combat fundamentals such as spacing and hitstun length (something that was very well thought out in the original game). He made an interesting point that Shinji Mikami's dev team at Capcom 20 years ago were veterans from the arcade era, and their grasp on game design fundamentals were very strong. That knowledge is pretty clearly lost in Capcom's current dev team, and it clearly shows. Also, I very much disagree that Wind Waker HD and the Demon's Souls remake are so good that they replace the originals. The original Wind Waker had a really pleasing cel-shaded art style that felt nice to look at. The remake uses a different technique but still tries to emulate the original style, with hideous bloom lighting everywhere that makes it really unpleasant to look at. It completely goes against how easy the original game was on the eyes. The Demon's Souls has a similar problem; Bluepoint is obviously very skilled technically, but their visual artists clearly didn't understand the art style of the original game. They completely butchered the Fat Officials, Vanguard, Fool's Idol and many more, while also making baffling changes to the lighting of the Nexus and the UI. The music is also often vastly inferior to the original game, for example Phalanx's theme. Most of these changes misunderstand the design of the original game so clearly that I don't understand how someone can think the remake could replace the original.

I'm not the usual target Audience for Resident Evil games... I'm neither particularly into First Person Shooters, nor Horror Games... And yet, the way how Horror games build tension, with this one in particular, is very interesting! There are a lot of interesting concepts in this that can be applied in way more genres than just one... On a different note, a game being remade in such a way is awesome! It can be scary to make changes to an established formula... But putting the effort into it is really worthwhile!

Years ago when RE4 came out there was a paper book, a game solution, added to an issue of video game magazine I was regularly reading. I have read through the whole solution and immediately fell in love with the game. Many times have I wanted to play it but never actually did. I don't really know why. It's still on my wishlist on multiple platforms, lol. Now I am watching your video, not really wanting to spend $70 on a game, but yet again, especially with how well the experience has been crafted, I am falling in love with the game once again. Perhaps I'll play it in a near future, or you know, maybe 20 years down the line they will make another reedition, haha. Your video is really nice. It makes great service to the actual game.

It's been 10 months and no one's going to read this comment, but the ravens were mentioned enough times to trigger my inner nerd. So, are they worth shooting? Eeeh.... probably yes. Ravens can drop three items - money, gunpowder and red gemstones, and it's completely random. (Yes, you can save scum every crow in the game to give you a gemstone.) Gems are of course super worth it, but the drop is rare. Gunpowder is the worst drop money-wise, but since you can't really buy it, its value is very subjective. Money isn't much usually, and if you take into account occasional misses, you will end up with slightly more if not just as much as you'd earn by selling those bullets. There are however "scripted ravens". Those guys will always drop the same thing and it may be a thing outside of the random drop list. Some scripted ravens will drop good stuff like blue gems or grenades, but other will only drop 100pst, which means they are not worth shooting as one handgun bullet sells for 120pst. So if you are playing this game for 10th time, you may want to remember which ones to shoot.

They did the escalation of tension really well in Code Veronica as well. One part you enter a police station and have to leave all weapons in a secure box only to run down a corridor with zombies banging on the walls. Once you complete the objective at the end you hear the windows smash out of sight and have to run back, completely defenceless. Capcom know what they're doing.

Too bad the game went too far at times with the backtracking.
