One moment i actually hated in this movie was the lady writing "Itchy Tasty" scene. In the game when reading the keeper's diary, you see how the dude was slowly going insane while you are creeped out more and more with each page you flip, and by the time you reach "itchy tasty" part, you realise the moment he lost all his humanity. Its so horrifying to think what was going on with this guy while he was recording his experience in the diary. The only thing that would have made it more scarier is after putting away the diary, the zombie jumped out of the closet then, instead of before even reading the diary. But still great and memorable moment from the 1st game. In this movie, they just throw this easter egg without any context, and whatever there is in the name of "context" is just meh. The she-zombie just spies Claire, writes itchy tasty on the mirror, and then smashes through it to attack.

As someone who liked the movie i think it's biggest problem was combining RE1 and RE2 into one story instead of focusing on one game. I feel like they were trying to rush into a shared cinematic universe by establishing all important RE characters in the first movie then branch them off later. Also idk why they merged RE1 and RE2 when RE2 and RE3 take place roughly at the same time

Paul WS Anderson did an amazing job with the adaptations, he actually turned the video game into a movie that catered to both video game fans and horror movie fans, that’s why it grossed so much money, people wanting the movie to be exactly like the video games, don’t understand how drastically different movies and video games are from each other, imagine watching a horror movie about zombies and none of the 5to6 main characters die, make it make sense because that’s what y’all asking for, horror movies typically have a main character that survives while everyone around them dies, that’s the formula, and that’s what PA did, he took a survival horror game and adapted to the survival horror movie formula.

Mashing Resident 1 & 2 together was a HUGE mistake from the start. When I heard they were combining two of those games together while filming, I KNEW right then and there, that was a bad idea. Making Resident Evil 1 all on it's own, IS worthy enough of a full length film! There are SO MAY ideas you can do with the first game to make the film work! The characters, the haunted feel of the mansion, the history of the mansion, solving the puzzles of the mansion, surviving the attacks from the zombies, the many clues and journals the characters find and trying to discover what everything means! SO MANY THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THAT FIRST GAME ALONE! Resident Evil should be one of the easiest games to ever adapt into a motion picture! Fans can literally make a better Resident Evil movie! If there's ONE positive thing about the director of Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, he is a fan of the games. The police station looks very accurate to the game. SO MANY Easter Eggs and references to the games are really charming to see. But it feels like he was way too focus on making easter eggs and references to the games, rather than focusing on making a good movie. And that's just not enough.

@@JCLopez209 Combining them wasn’t the problem. Shitty writing was. Everything is wrong. You can split this into two movies and it would still be garbage. Chris and Claire are Birkin’s adopted kids? And claiming that to be the case only excuses the mishandling of nearly every aspect of the franchise lore. I’ve been playing resident evil since ‘96. I can ASSURE you they didn’t combine both games. They took recognizable imagery from each game and mashed it into garbage for the average person to consume. I get what you’re trying to say. If they treated the series like an anthology, they’d easily have a full trilogy on their hands by telling 1-3 separately as they’re meant to. Trying to combine two stories into one ruins all the character perspectives because no one gets to actually have a role in the story. Claire never got to save Sherry nor fight Mr. X Leon doesn’t meet Ada and get fully informed on Umbrella’s conspiracy Jill doesn’t have her last escape nor encounter Nemesis Wesker isn’t at the helm of the conspiracy, betraying STARS and Umbrella. Ada doesn’t get to portray a double crossing spy, so she’s depicted as Wesker’s handler which is the opposite of their dynamics. Ultimately, everyone is just depicted as the character they’re portraying, they don’t actually get to perform or enact any of the feats that made them who they are in the story. It’s like a fanfiction where everyone does ideally what they’re supposed to but doesn’t have any actual meaning.

At least not that I have heard or read. They had a really great opportunity to do something awesome, completely dropped the ball. I didn't even remember half the things you pointed out until watching the vid. I hope someone, someday can get this right. I don't understand how studios screw this up The only way a live action Resident Evil succeeds, is to make it a series. Like True Detective, every season would be different: Season 1: Arklay Mountains/Spencer Mansion Season 2: Raccoon City's descent Season 3: Nemesis/Escape from Raccoon City 8 episodes per season, gives plenty of time for character development and the plot to marinate. This prevents the 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag of force feeding every conceivable reference to the games in the movies.

I'm that one dissenting opinion in the comments. I really love this movie. Saw it in theaters twice and have it on DVD and Blu-Ray. About 45 minutes were cut for the theatrical release and it was rushed out because Covid really messed up the filming schedule. It's as if John Carpenter saw the original cutscenes and he made a movie with that cheesiness. Half of the movie is Assault on Precinct 13, with parts of The Fog and Big Trouble in Little China. This is a comedy horror film. I'm hoping that it gets enough of a fanbase that we finally get a director's cut, someday. There were plans for a sequel with Johannes Roberts. It was going to mix together Code Veronica and RE4. This other movie you mentioned, if it is still in production, has nothing to do with Johannes.

Also fuck what this movie did to Leon with both fists. The worst portrayal of Leon Kennedy ever. Not only did the filmmakers race swapped him, they also made him lazy, dumb and clumsy. Claire is totally unlikeable and is there just to boss the incompetent Leon around. And yeah the Jill in this version is nothing like the games at all. The only character that comes close to the games is Chris. The whole movie is just an unredeemable mess.

They cast Neal McDonough to play William Burkin and give him generic lines. Feels like a huge waste. Similar to casting Willem Dafoe and putting a mast over his face for a large chunk of the movie. I guess the latter was at least good besides the dumb wardrobe mistake.

They purposely went "Woke"by making Leon a klutz hiding behind the female character. The writer made him useless and didnt have brain to asked himself why Leon Kennedy was hired by the city PoliceDepartment in the first place. The resourceful and well thought agent JillValentine has been made in a"hothead baddie"saying baddie things with no character or purpose unlike in the video game.Another problem was the video game references that the casual movie goer may not know were not discussed leaving the viewer in limbo. The incoherent actions of the characters leaves the viewer disconnected as writer/director Johannes Roberts got cute-funky fresh with something that works and destroyed it that includes the ending of this film. Its hard to be original so we could only make something just as good so stick to the story of Resident Evil(Biohazard in Japan)a franchise which was destroyed thanks to"Woke".

Not everything you don't like is "woke." The movie is bad, but it has nothing to do with being woke.

There was an idea here, and it was a good one, because I liked a lot of the references and the fact we got stuff like Lisa Trevor and the actual Spencer mansion. But the execution was ALL wrong. Their first and huge mistake was combining RE1 and RE2 into one movie. You're just asking for the writing to make zero fucking sense by doing that. The characters sucked and were by name alone. And you can't do a proper RE film on a 25 mil budget and hire some notable names like McDonough and Logue, among other recognizable faces. While they're not big A-list actors, I'm sure some of them weren't THAT cheap either. Add in that with cgi, makeup, reshoots, among many other things, and 25 million is pretty fucking far from enough. But even if you hire no name but talented actors to save money, or just get more than 25 million, fixing the budget would not fix the shit writing, or the movie as a whole. Real shame.

Ultimately, it's not the race-swap that's inherently bad, but it's usually why it happened. Because if the movie was good and not just a thrown together cash grab, some people won't like it, but a lot of people liked Samuel Jackson's portrayal of Nick Fury. But unfortunately, the people that made this abomination were lazy with their "accuracy" that it overall hurt the other sides of the movie's production. Because, I won't lie, the "accuracy" was surface level for an attempt at a cash grab. A movie accurate to the games can work, but not by this group's creatives

Honestly, I didn't HATE this movie. I'd rather watch it than most of the original RE franchise sequels. However, certain aspects were just head-scratchers. Like, why combine the stories of the first 2 games and not just go in chronological order? Why are all the main characters so unrecognizable in looks and in personality? Making Leon a joke character was unforgivable. But... I can say that I definitely didn't hate it as much as a lot of other people. I'm a sucker for fan-service, so those easter eggs were awesome to me. I dunno... it blows my mind how wrong these studios ALWAYS get these video-game adaptations. It's like... you already HAVE the material written for you. Just follow it and make it live-action. And my GOD... that Netflix series had to be the most laughably terrible RE shit I've ever seen by a LONG shot. I hated the orginal RE 4-6 movies... the first 3 were okay just as zombie movies. But, that Netflix one was just so god awful that it makes me really appreciate the WTRC movie even more.

I think it’s better than the last two Anderson movies, the Netflix series and Infinite Darkness. That’s about where I’d place it.

Still like it better than some of the Paul Anderson films but it'd be nice if they actually stuck to the script of the games all of these movies HAVE BEEN PEAK CRINGE

Lol, you're not wrong in your assessment. But ima play devils advocate...i didn't hate it as much as many others. Although I was downright offended by the portrayal of Leon (it's my #1 gripe with the movie) but let's move on, I liked Robbie Amell as Chris, Kaya as claire, & Tom Hopper as wesker, & Donald louge is always welcome in any media I consume same for Neal Mcdonough. But chief irons is horrible casting for Donal IF! You stick to the character from the games because he's such a likeable character actor, & Neal's character was simply a director problem (spoiler alert its all a writer/director problem). & wesker, Claire, Chris & even Jill aren't acted poorly (tho I'd prefer a more appearance accurate Jill simply cuz the other 3 look the part). This is simply a writing & direction problem & i think there are still good bones here. If they bring on a competent writer & director I think the sequels can be worlds apart in quality, with the 1st one being a forgotten stinker (like the wolverine movies) & you can retcon most of it later . As devils advocate I'm TRYING! to make an argument for not throwing the baby out with the bathwater lol. I guess I'm arguing for a soft reboot.
