Residual Limb: Up Close and Personal 8.5 Years Post-Amputation

Meet Steve. Yes, I named my leg Steve. Random piece of information- I have also named each one of my prosthetic legs some variation of Steve as well. Anyways, this is what my residual limb looks like 8 1/2 years after I lost my leg in the baler accident. There’s some scars from ingrown hairs, MRSA scares, and other happenings over the course of the last almost decade. Otherwise, I think it looks like a pretty good piece of meat.

Dude you are an inspiration! I just watched your accident on Rescue 9-1-1 omg! I was in tears for you.. I could tell while you were talking with dispatch that you were a grounded, wonderful, funny person. Even though the accident has passed I was praying with you and the dispatch caller. And you saying “ if I don’t die, my mom is going to kill me!” I literally laughed my ass off cause that is something I would have said for sure. You are making the most of your life, and are being there for others, what more could you ask for. I have 2 daughters, 27 & 23; as a mother there is nothing more frightening than hearing and watching your child go through so much agony, yet you were so strong and brave.. I would have been such a basket case. Im 100% sure your parents could not be more proud of the wonderful son/person that you have grown into! You keep doing you boo-boo! I was wanting to follow you on Instagram and was wondering what your act. was, I couldn’t seem to find you.. if its private I understand, was just wanting to follow such a positive person. God has made you our angel on earth. Heard your 911 for the first time tonight. I could not help but cry. You were incredibly brave. I don’t know if I could have kept it together as great as you. When you wanted your mom called I had tears just pouring down my face. It is really great to see your alive and well. I think the surgery turned out really great. The wrinkle is no big deal when you look at what could have happened. It’s amazing it was 8 years ago. Your an inspiration to so many people. The shaving thing sounds like it's a catch-22. Either you don't and then the hair pulls, or you do and it gets irritated. Not to be funny here, but have you thought about laser hair removal on that area? That would definitely take care of the issue long-term! I'm happy to see your thriving and have a positive attitude. Hi John! Have you ever considered doing laser therapy for the hairs on your stump? My brother-in-law did that (for pther reasons, no amputee), and the hair is way less, which in your case would bring down the chance of both irritation before shaving, and the ‘ingrowing’ afterwards immensely! Hey man! You got an amazing story dude! You overcame a lot! Here's a little tip for the hair problem by the way if you see this. I've heard that they make products that basically kill your hair follicles over time so that the hair never grows back. If you're still having that issue then maybe it might help to look into it. I remember seeing a product that was some kind of light and it kills the hair follicles. Hopefully that might help. God bless you man!

Have you tried to use a depilatory cream rather than shaving? I am not an amputee but I found that using the cream instead of a razor prevented a lot of ingrown hairs in areas i would get them like my ankles. Plus the hair regrows a lot slower since the cream goes all the way into the roots. Smells not the best while you wait, but you just wipe away the hair.

I’ve listened to your 911 call quiet a few times now, and always come out impressed with what a together young guy you were, and still are. What Ching this and seeing your stump (?) not sure that’s the correct terminology, I can see how that bone would cause some issues. You said you wished you had more of a fat layer between your bone and skin, could a fat transfer help in any way, or is that a totally ridiculous question? I was just thinking, It would be great if that would work, for comforts sake!? 😊

Even tho the missing bit off my finger is so small in comparison it feels embarassing. Thankfully I hadn't let them amputate further and the antibiotics worked and my fingernail was able to grow back. I try to think of myself as cool like Jerry Garcia (it is the same finger as his was, but only a bit missing) that's really gotta hurt tho cuz u have to constantly put pressure on it. Yours looks a lot better than earlier on tho for sure

You can always go back in and have that surgically evened back out so that it doesn't crease and is more comfortable for you to stand on for longer amounts of time. Also your insurance company should cover the cost of the procedure because your doctor can give legitimate medical reasons as to why it needs to be done per comfort reasons and NOT per cosmetic appearances reasons that you may also feel? But when it comes to medical needs of a procedure like that they will cover it. Have a great day! Lastly, a compression stocking may make it more comfortable on the bottom, definitely worth a try.

Well it’s not permanent, although apparently it does keep the hair away a lot longer than shaving. But I would still have to get it waxed at least every other month or so, depending on how long I was willing to let the hair grow back.
