A couple things (from someone with 30+ years in the field). Resistance welding does not "melt" the materials being joined. They are heated to a plastic state and forged with pressure of the electrodes. When the material is heated to melting point, there is usually a large amount of expulsion. Expulsion is not desirable. The electrodes are a copper alloy. Pure copper is too soft to be used in a production environment. Tongs are only used in the smallest of welders. Typically they are called "arms". and may be up to 4-6" in diameter for really big machines. Seam welding rollers are called wheels, and are made from the same copper alloys as spot welding electrodes. Usually, the wheels are forged to improve life. You can imagine those wheels are very expensive.

why the plates are overlapped up to some extent?
@ADTWstudy3 жыл бұрын
Because without overlapping you cannot join them. In other types of welding processes, we provide filler materials but in the resistance welding process, we overlap thin sheets on their edges and make a current pass through them, by doing so there is heat generated at that point and both the plates melt and fuse...
