@PierceThirlen25 жыл бұрын
Any chance that you could play WITHOUT ALL OF THE DISTORTION so we can actually hear the differences in the tone between the two bridges? What I heard was a pan from slightly to the left to closer to center. There also appeared to be a volume difference which makes it difficult to determine a tonal difference, as the human ear hears a different tonal balance at different volume levels.
@DaveBarlowGuitar5 жыл бұрын
All the settings were the same so not sure why we have this issue, the volume difference s to do with the resomax :)
@PierceThirlen25 жыл бұрын
@@DaveBarlowGuitar I carefully listed to this again making sure that my head was perfectly still and what I noticed is that the image of the rhythm shifted from the left side to the right side after changing bridges. The image of the lead remained centered. You need to redo this test, preferable with clean tones.

Absolutely agree, Pierce. Maybe Dave could look up the definition of 'distort' in a dictionary. Having the same settings is like saying, 'What do you mean? There is a remote possibility that the magnet in the bridge setup could influence the sound of the typical single coil pickup, but not so much with a humbucker. (A humbucker is less sensitive to nearby magnetic fields because of it's different magnetic pathway.)
@tswrench2 жыл бұрын
Naw. I owned one, and wondered the same thing, but the Resomax doesn't have a strong enough magnetic field to interfere with single coils. Not that I noticed anyway, and I was listening for it.

Picking a difference in sound is hard but is there, the biggest difference I’ve noticed in my experienced is the “feel”, strings feel a bit loser therefore they lose some of that “snap” when you pick a note ... if that makes any sense.
@charlesreohr62364 жыл бұрын
I heard the difference immediately. The Graph Tech made the sound (excuse the expression) comfortably numb, almost like turning the tone knobs down and volume up to compensate. I think I'll stick with the golden age tune o matic roller bridge. It's the closest to the stock bridge in sound, price and fit to a stock tune o matic (looks and fits like stock but with rollers). It was designed to replace the tune o matic where tuning (because of vibrato) or string breakage was a problem.

I'm listening with a DAC and okay headphones. The difference isn't subtle. The Resomax almost seems to resonate less. It seems like it cleans tone a bit, but rock guitar players don't really want a cleaner tone, do we? It sounds dull, but smoother. I wonder what sounds like resonance isn't the cheaper bridge rattling more. Maybe you can compensate with more gain and mids or treble and it would similar but better. 🤷♂

I think I preferred the sound of the roller bridge myself. If anything, the new one sounded like it took some of the highs away (whether you like that or not). The real test would be if it felt different playing and on string breakage. I bought a set of graphite saddles from Stewmac years ago. Basically a drop in replacement for your standard tuneomatic saddles. My though was replacing the D string saddles (as I tend to break them more often for some reason). I replaced it on two guitars and in terms of string breakage it was a bit better. Didn't really notice much in the way of tone difference between the stings. BTW Dave, The roller bridge you put on: is it the one where you have to lift the string off every time you want to adjust the intonation? If so, there's some other ones you can get that are basically the same as a tunematic with the screws at the front and roller saddles. They work pretty well and I think I paid about $12-13 AU for them off ebay. I think the little bit of difference it made to your tone is an improvement. It provided better definition, which can translate to better control. What I'm wondering is will you hear even more improvement if you pair the Resomax bridge with the Resomax tailpiece (it's supposed to be a system). I had the bridge--liked it--but I haven't tried the tailpiece yet.

As stated, ever so slight volume difference between clips, but I think the GT resomax took away some of the highs and harmonic overtones from what I could hear (through sennheiser headphones) it certainly added nothing. You said it felt different but not how it felt different, from that I'll take it the roller bridge felt better.

Interesting, the settings were exactly the same, the roller bridge was more comfortable to play due to no hard edges, the Resomax sounded/felt better for me but not by much.

Dave Barlow , Interesting that you felt that it felt/ sounded better. It was, to my ear ever so slightly duller in tone, but as you said in the video everyone's hearing and perceptions are different depending on age etc. Was $90+ better though? I know what I reckon in answer to that one 😉

Switching the bridge changes the distance between the strings and the pickups, which is one of the most overlooked ways to change tone.
@keithklassen5320 Жыл бұрын
If you've changed the distance between strings and pickups by changing the bridge, you've also completely destroyed the action and intonation. A bridge should be able to be put in exactly the same position as the original bridge, otherwise you've made a huge mistake.
@mdargusch Жыл бұрын
@@keithklassen5320 I think we are having two different conversations. I'm saying that swapping a bridge, or even just the saddles, can change the string height, which will affect tone because the strings are no longer at the same height above the pickups.

I've never bought a bridge for tonal enhancement,..only for "clean" or "clear" tone that I wasn't getting because the bridge was junk. Same with the nut.
