I just purchased my Burkart Resona with a Wave Style Headjoint earlier this summer and have fallen in love with it. Such a quality sound for such a good price.

I own this picc with traditional style headjoint. I did try both before purchasing, and my backup instrument has the wave style. I bought it when it was called Global. I am very pleased with this instrument. It solved most of my frustrations with piccolo playing, chief of which is TUNING! Over a period of two years I finally developed trust that it’s ok and better to play with headjoint pulled out quite a bit. Unlike with my Powell flute, this picc does have some notes and ranges that I have to adjust for pitch fairly significantly, but it is actually quite easy to adjust them and still maintain wonderful tone quality and color capability. I finally had some repair issues after about 5 years of ownership and crazy psycho instrument care (I am very afraid of owning a wooden instrument in Colorado), but nothing that is not achievable by a good technician. I do highly recommend this instrument. It is capable of a high-level professional sound for an attainable price.

Your reviews are the best I've seen in KZbin, seriously. You're very clear. I also like that you're transparent by saying that you earn a small comission when someone uses your code. I think everyone knows that, but you're being transpararent. I really appreciate all your videos :) Regards from Argentina!

I started high school in 2007 and I didn't know about Burkart until about 2010 but that was because I did Miami-Dade College Honor Band and the lady who eventually became my teacher in the early years of my undergrad had a poster of Jim Walker in her studio. I've heard good things about Burkart. Fun Fact: Emma Resmini and Gina Luciani both play on a Burkart Piccolo. I really like the Traditional head joint on this piccolo😃❤️🎶🎼🎹

When I started playing C8 on piccolo, I just thought it was expected to be able to be played... So I practiced it so very much. I can just about get it on even Chinese made piccolos. Harmonics too. I just treated the piccolo as the "mini flute" and I expected to be able to play all the same harmonics as on the flute

Zachary Coronado this was me too, I even practiced long tones all the way up 😭 im a flute performance major after 2 years I’ve had to play exaclty one high C on flute, and one on piccolo, both in band with optional 8va. It never dawned on me how rare and hard it is to play the C8 well

The embouchure shape in The piccolo is different. Approximate the upper lip to the hjoint and close the lips to to make a tiny embouchure. On the flute is wider. I use a wave, a lot easier for doublist. Use less Vibrato and look for ressonance, it will gain in dynamics and control.

Very good review. Actually I have this piccolo with the wave head joint an it is interesting to compare with the other one which I never play with. You described your feeling with some terms I never heard before. Very interesting. Could you review the Nagahara mini since it is a very special flute/piccolo and it comes with a lot of optional head joint and choice of wood?

Forgive my silly question, but what is the real difference between 'tone colour' and 'dynamics'. It seems pretty much the same thing, for me...
@zacharycoronado6749
@zacharycoronado6749 7 жыл бұрын
These are very much different. Dynamics is how loud something is. Tone color is the way a note sounds. This is in respect, for example, between two different flute players. 2 players can easily play the same dynamic, but 2 players have wildly different tone color. Tone color is basically how a certain note sounds but not it's tuning, rather it's feel

does anyone know what it means when they say burkart scale? because i’ve seen it with other brands but im not sure if it has to do with the tuning or just the way the piccolo was built…

Is it harder to get out top notes on a wooden picc like these compared to say the plastic/resin Yamaha piccolo?
@Bobthe1st2

I have a metal piccolo and I used to play on my schools wood composite piccolo but it broke. But from my experience yes. Wooden piccolos require a lot more control. For me at least. When I played on the wooden one it was much harder to play higher notes
@zacharycoronado6749
@zacharycoronado6749 7 жыл бұрын
High notes aren't necessarily harder on either. For a beginner, High notes are going to be difficult in general. The Yamaha picc with the metal headjoint (ypc32) is what I believe you're talking about. These have a metal headjoint, which is a far bigger gap than the difference between wood and plastic. High notes are harder to play beautifully on metal piccs, but with practice, both should work well

Which piccolo would you suggest for a college student living in a dorm? My daughter plays the flute and started playing the piccolo a couple of years ago at the request of her high school band director. He gave her a school piccolo (metal) to use. She would like to bring a piccolo with her to college, in addition to her flute. She will be studying science and might join a music ensemble as an extra curricular activity. She is not a music student. With that background, would you recommend the Burkhart or is it too delicate for dorm life? Is there a quality piccolo that is a touch less expensive and maybe more hearty? Thanks for your help.
@thoregulden4545
@thoregulden4545 2 жыл бұрын
I would say this really depends on her level of playing! And also what kind of ensemble she would like to join. I think, for amateur musicians a piccolo like the Pearl 105 or 165, Yamaha 62 (only with a headjoint upgrade like Mancke or Fischer) and maybe the Powell Sonaré are cheaper alternatives to Burkart (though the Yamaha is quite overpriced in the US). I would probably wait with purchasing a piccolo unti your daughter joined an ensemble to see how much piccolo she will be playing in the end because if she only plays piccolo once every month or so I personally would not invest into a Burkart. Also: Let her try out as many as possible because especially for piccolo it is crucial that the instrument fits the players needs!

this might be a stupid question but are wooden piccolos better than metal ones?
@zacharycoronado6749
@zacharycoronado6749 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. Absolutely. High notes sound like intolerant screams on a metal instrument. Wood piccolos are much more pleasant sounding. Metal piccolos are great for outdoors where sound quality doesn't matter. Don't play a wood piccolo outdoors

Zachary Coronado thank you for the advice! i'm just starting to learn piccolo for my high school band/marching band. I was switching between a wooden one and a metal one since not all the instrument are back for being fixed, I was really confused with how they differed besides what they were made of :) thanks again! :))
@BBQJester
@BBQJester 5 жыл бұрын
metal ones produce a sharper sound that cuts through the noisy brass like trumpets, which makes it suitable for outdoor bands as other instruments will usually drown out the flute. wood is not advisable for outdoor due to it's sensitivity to temperature causing cracks.
