Resource guarding is one of the more dangerous traits a pet dog can have. Many times people will un-knowingly train their dogs to exhibit resource guarding while the dog is still a young puppy.

Training a dog who has resource guarding issues is not something for a beginner to attempt. In this video I explain some of the basic things to look for, avoid and how to deal with the dog that may be resource guarding.

My cane Corso puppy was the runt and was very aggressive with resource guarding food. I just put my fingers in his food while he eats. I pet him and let him know it’s ok and correct him when necessary. Now my wife can do it as well and he doesn’t ever growl at her.

Unfortunately my puppy has gotten recourse guarding issues from how they were fed as puppies. Just put two big bowls on the floor and let all 8 puppies swarm the bowls and fend for themselves. Now every time my moms dog goes near mine when hes eating or has a bone or a food chew, he growls and snaps at her and even bit her. Not enough to draw blood but enough to freak me out and search for ways to reduce this behavior so i very much appreciate you making a video on this potentially dangerous topic.

"Teasing" is another OLD thing humans did wrong with dogs. O can even remember my dad doing it in the 70s, he certainly didn't mean to be negative, but we're now, decades later, really just beginning to address humanity's animal mistakes. I'm not pushing vegetarianism at all, but if you work with animals at any level, you may want to consider it. Dogs KNOW you're not a predator, and they often act more friendly. Reiki, and/or massage can also help in situations where stress may be an issue. I like Robert's eclectic approaches to things. There's 2 kinds of dog trainers, humble and pompous ASS-clown, the humble person ALWAYS ends up with more knowledge and ability.

Its almost never genetic so unless u are familiar with the parents and grandparents of that dog having the same behaviors then its more than likely behavioral and the dog probably sees u as a possession rather than a leader. I know because I've had to learn to be assertive and stop myself from empowering the behaviors accidentally. It makes a huge difference.

If you want your dog to protect you, you have to start with not allowing resource guarding and get solid obedience foundation down. Obedience and a confident dog is key for any protection sport and protection sports is simply where obedience and bite work are taught properly and in solid command of a dog, and sports is simply in prey drive mostly and then defensive.

Good video! We have a male Rotty/Chow Chow mix that only exhibits this resource guarding when it comes to food in his bowl and another dog. Any of our family members can stick their hand in the bowl and take some and he has no problem. Even our kitties can come and eat out of his bowl and he has no problem with it. But let our other dog (the current one and our last one) come close to his food bowl and there will be blood spilled. It's only food in the bowl that causes this behavior. Easy to fix, we feed the dogs in separate rooms and when it comes to treats (they always get treats while together), we make it clear, by name, who the treat is intended for. Other than that, he is a gentle giant (100 lbs) who loves to be with people and other animals. Thanks for the video!

Looking for advice. My dog doesn’t have any resource guarding issues with people and gets along great with other dogs... until a ball is introduced. He becomes very protective of the ball and lashes out if another dog comes around to get it. If a person comes near the ball, he doesn’t care and will play fetch or tug no problem. This has become an issue when I take him to a kennel, plays fine with the dogs until a ball comes out. So now the kennel won’t take him anymore. Thoughts?

My TOY POODLE (1yo) is guarding my belongings: my bag, my shoes, her leash - she doesn’t allow to touch it by strangers. If she knows someone she allows it, if not she is signalising DONT TOUCH. To people she moan (not barking) and if they try to touch my belongings she tries to stop them with her little body and by licking their hands. To dogs- she barks and sends super clear signal- don’t touch, but than she’s sweet again like she’d add “Please” ;) When I tell her STOP she’s not guarding anymore. I don’t know if I should change it. I find it useful. What do you thing?

I have a mini schnauzer puppy from large litter. But she's our only dog since 10 wks. Lately has been developing food aggression at 7 mos. I feed her 2x per day & she gets healthy treats. We play fetch & tug games daily. She knows sit & down & wait commands. Now she is growling & stiff at mealtime- when I touch her or put my hand near her bowl. Of course I smack her to show I am the pack leader. She would be nipped & put in her place in a real dog pack. But I may try totally feeding her by my hand only. She is always hungry & would eat until she's sick, so I cant just give her copious amts of food. So I watch her weight and feed amts appropriate. Having a dog is alot of work. 🤔

Ok, so my dog has gotten somewhat toy aggression but only with other dogs and only sometimes, she’ll have the toy and then maybe other dogs will be trying to get the toy from her mouth (she doesn’t tend to do anything then) and then maybe she’ll stop and drop the toy and as a dog goes to grab it she’ll kind lunge at then fast and get them away from her toy, she hasn’t bit or drew blood. Or maybe sometimes a dog will take the toy out of her mouth and she’ll do the same thing (but only sometimes) she’s fine when she is playing tug of war. So I’ve come to the conclusion that I would have to get her to drop the ball as soon as possible (when we tell her to drop it and a dog picks it up she doesn’t really care) is there anything else we can do to help her, after watching the video we should tell her to drop it and take her away? But then a dog will grab it and she’ll have to “fight” to get the toy back, some dogs at the park don’t listen to other people or listens in general to drop the toy.

Its a game for my resource guarder. I dopte dher at 18 months. A speed freak raised her. Sort of a rescue i buess. Shes improved a way lot just me not allowing it or giving her own space for bone time…thats a specific amount of time for no stress bone gnawing. Everybody gets that. Their own bone time. At first she growled an snapped ferociously at me when time was up! Whoa. That was first. So i grabbed a harness with bit and put it between her and the bone and grabbed it and told. Her no. Ha ha yeah right no. Then when i got the new puppy i caught her teasing it with a toy by just having it by her and waiting. So she could reprimand the puppy. Little asshole so i took those away from her too anytime she found one. This video doesnt really say how to change this but it certainly needs to be dealt with effectively even it means seperating at feeding time….i free feed. They all sort out when theyre gonna eat thank god. But treats toy and bone is a source of conflict. I just manage it. I interrupt it and remove the thing. Didnt know to remove the dog. Does that mean leave the thing to the dog whinning for it? Thats not good either. Where do you remove the dog to? Oh remove the dog and then remove the thing….right…. Its a little chronic with my one tweeker raised shepherd lab boxer mix. But shes not deadly anymore. Just overly assertive about it. When times up times up. She knows that now. Whew…its with other dogs the expected happens because im not watching. Dont like or approve of that. They just have to learn im the only one who can resource guard. I have a mare who is lead mare i. Herd. She has run off other horses and come back to protect me. It was flattering but i had to ( kind pa heart breaking) run her off and tell her to do a thing in order she know one i dont need protecting and two im the lead mare. That tweeker raised girl has come a long way but its taken two and half years….she got older one and im always on it. She looks to me now. Even when the pup is in her face being a bother. I shoo the pup off and give it a toy or distraction meaning it…no…not now…later and tell thenother to go to her safe place…up on couch. They will try to bet each other trouble sometimes! Really! They are dogs number one and children number two. Except a few exceptional leader dogs. Thats a different relationship i wouldnt be able to manage nor want to.

Have an adopted Bull Terrier who is one of the most wonderful dog ever. I've never seen a dog so unflappable. Walking in the park bikes roar by him as well as skates, skate boards, jump ropes near his head. Dogs jump at his face pays no mind. He's even gotten bite & doesn't fight back. I use to breed & show b.t.'s so i know u need an assertive hand. When i first got him he gave me the "stink" eye with his food. Doing what this vid said i hans fed him. Went well. Then i would stand over him when he ate. Went well. But in typical b.t. style he won't eat unless i stand right next to him. Lol. It's his toys that he's not happy giving up. Do i think he would bite me? (never say never) but no. Not in the last 3 yrs. I just don't like that he does that. Going to try vids idea of "claiming the space" where to toy is as vs taking the toy from him. See how it goes

just found this explanation of resource guarding , its the most helpful one explaining why i have come across. i got my dog as a puppy, she doesn't guard stuff from humans, but will guard against other dogs. who she likes in al other situations just not when treats or food is being dished out (makes it hard to train with food on walks etc) her history was she's from a large litter there wasn't enough milk for all puppies so she was picked by the breeder to be a hand reared/fed puppy whist some of the other puppies were left to feed naturally. i'm not sure how to undo this thought process for her that she will get food now.

Thanks for the tips, helpful video. I have a springer cross labradoodle who’s 3. He’s recently become very possessive over his ball when other dogs come near he can snap (resource guarding it). Any tips/ideas? I have decided to take the ball away completely on walks as well as at home. Do you think this is sensible? How about when I introduce the ball again though?

My Golden retriever who is 1 is same with ball, frisbee any squeak toy he will fight with other dogs. He will even fight if it’s not his toy at the dog park. We are getting him neutered soon and hope it will help. We have to stop taking him to dog park because he fights.

I have the exact same problem Thomas! Never aggressive towards humans that take her toys but she cannot stand other dogs touching them. We too have withdrawn the ball form our walks as she was becoming frighteningly obsessed, sometimes sitting for 10+ mins staring at the ball on the floor waiting for it to move. How are you getting on? We have a 1 year old doberman female (unspayed)

My 2,5yo golden retriever guards resources. It’s better now as we have been working on it for a while. The problem is that you will never know when he will guard something. Today he may take the remote and guard it and tomorrow he will take the same remote and will give it back with no issues. Sometimes he steals something just cause he knows we will exchange it for a treat. It can be anything really…fav is dirty underwear lol - he won’t give that back. He doesn’t really guard his bawl but he will guard anything with other dogs. Sometimes he instigates a ‚chase me’ I have a stick game and then 5 min later he will remove himself, go lay down somewhere away and if another dog will come with and intention to play he will snap. Any idea what exercises I could potentially do to help with this? Also, we are trying to have a baby and it freaks me out. How to manage that behaviour around a baby. This dog is my whole life, love him more than anything but I have spoilt the shit out of him as well. Commands don’t work when he guards as well.

One of our dogs will refuse to eat his bone when our two dogs each get a bone. The other dog is quite the wimp. He will wait and shake nervously, just staring at his bone but not touch it. If the cats or other dogs just walk by, doesn’t even have to be close, he chases them away. It seems he has some sort of need to resource guard? Is this even a thing? He never ever resource guards towards people/kids.

The reason I had to look up this information is because my wife's little French bulldog constantly guards his water and food. As soon as he comes in from outside he'll run over to his water bowl and check on it. He will stare at it literally all day when humans are home, I say when humans are home because we have cameras that have the water bowl in view and he doesn't sit by it or hardly interact with it at all and I know this because the cameras are motion activated and start recording when it detects the dogs walking around. To my knowledge nothing has ever happened for him to guard it constantly. When my 4yo daughter walks by he will attack her feet for apparently no reason other than the fact she got too close, I'm not exactly sure if she's ever done anything to his water I honestly have no idea. He won't attack anyone else like that but will get closer to the bowl as people walk by and basically put his head over the bowl. I've tested his response and actions by putting my hand twords the water and he won't bite me, but he will deflect my hand with his head, idk if that's him respecting me as 'alpha' in a way, but I haven't had my wife or two kids do this test yet. His bowl of food is directly on the other side of the hallway like 4 feet or whatever it is idk, I will put my hand by his water and he reacts by pushing my hand, then I put my hand near his food and he reacts by pushing my hand but not as strongly as the water if that makes sense. I believe he's 2 and we also have German Shepard/boxer mix that's about 7 if I remember correctly. What's strange to me is he won't react to my dog when she wants water or food and he's guarding it. What's also strange to me is he won't drink hardly any of it all day but he'll sit there and watch it even when the kids are in bed and my wife and I are watching TV and haven't moved in a couple hours or whatever amount of time. What he will do is drink for about ten or fifteen minutes straight non-stop around the same time everyday. I've been kind of studying him the best I can with limited knowledge and what I've been doing is letting him drink for a couple minutes and then I stand in his way until he lays down or sits, I won't say anything, I'll just get in-between him until he does that. It seems to be working and he will drink less at once. Idk why he has to get all his liquids in one go instead of throughout the day like my dog. The only person he will attack is my 4yo but never actually bites her, just kind of nips and makes noise by growling, barking, or basically just inhaling with snot in is nose because it was bred with the dumbest intentions in mind for looks, which honestly I absolutely hate him acting that way twords her. He's a pure breed and cost more than my truck but my wife just HAD to have it. He was supposed to be a breeder dog and we were supposed to make our money back, well, that lasted about two f'ing months and we got him fixed because my wife's friend decided she didn't want to breed with him even though she helped pick him out specifically for breeding and he was humping my dogs head. My dog was a rescue dog, 100% free, smartest dog I have ever encountered. I didn't want her at the time but if I didn't take her she was going to the pound and I couldn't live with myself if I let her go and I'm extremely happy I didn't. I got her awhile after I started dating my now wife, idk how long exactly, my wife made me stop training her everyday all day because "she doesn't listen to me like she listens to you" completely wrecking my relationship with MY dog and I gave up completely on my dog. Now she's the "family" dog and I honestly regret stopping what I was doing with her over a lady I had no idea if I was staying with long term or not. My wife has been asking me for a pure breed doberman for about a year now and I've VERY firmly put my foot down each time. She had three growing up and NO ONE could even get on their hands and knees without getting brutally attacked by them. I. Do. Not. Like. Those. dogs. Period. In my opinion they are aggressive and unpredictable and I will not have them around me or my kids. There's dogs dying every day in shelters and she wants to waste money we don't have on dogs she can't and won't train. Her little frenchy dog? Shake, sit, and leave it. That's it, and honest, not very well. He has two brain cells bouncing around, he's basically just a living thing with a photogenic face, good for attention on Facebook that barely anyone cares about or interacts with to say it bluntly. I honestly forgot why I'm writing this and now I'm very upset with myself I've allowed this to happen in my home now that I have actually thought about this in detail, and I'm highly disappointed in my wife for forcing me to allow it when I expressed how I felt before she got him while promising me all these things she couldn't keep or even tried to keep. He makes her happy I guess, and that's good enough for me I suppose. I'm done with dogs. As soon as these two die I don't think I'm ever owning another living thing. Sorry for talking, I'll stop now.

I totally get you on the last part. My two shelter dogs I saved years ago were 10x better than this exotic bully that cost me $3k+. This dude started resource guarding randomly before he turned a year, we never messed with his food or water and he was the only dog in the house. We got him trained and guess what? I’ve been bit sooo damn bad a few times now. I thought the expensive ass training would stop it completely or they can help me but nothing works no high value treat nothing helps where he will do a trade with me for what he’s guarding it really sucks. I want to vacation but also I don’t want to put anyone at risk of getting bit, I don’t live by my family that can help me. I wish one day it would just go away but I doubt it..

Please watch beckmans dog training!! He has an amazing Doberman. Also, I think you should stand firm in your decision to not get anymore dogs. You’re going to be the one doing all the work anyway and the amount of money going into purchasing the dog just isn’t worth it if the owner isn’t going to take care of it. In this case that’s your wife. Don’t be too upset at yourself.

Well I don't see how you keep a c h o w dog from resource guarding your you know you because that's what their their trained to do is I mean they're bred to do rather but I see what you're saying that they shouldn't be doing that unless you want them to like if you're just taking them for a walk I see what you're saying also if you pick the dog up away from or gather the dog away from the bone aren't they just going to take the bone with them I mean they're in their mouth?

What do you do if your dog resource guards towards cats? Our dog will bark aggressively at our cats when they eat their own food sometimes. I know folks will just say "well, feed the cats away from the dog", but that doesn't resolve the issue. The dog is guarding something that's not even hers. She doesn't get aggressive with people.

I think I may have created my puppy to start resource guarding when picking up stuff from outside such as sticks, rocks etc. When she was small I would take it out of her mouth as I was worried for her safety. She was constantly sniffing everything as puppies do, head to ground most of the time so she very quickly picking up stuff. She soon realized it will be taken out of her mouth so she started tensing up and guarding anything from outside. I'm trying to teach drop it, would a trade (high value treat) help best offset this behaviour so she doesn't think I'm going to forcibly remove anything she happens to pick up? Of course I do leave it and will work on her not having to sniff every inch of grass. She is 7 months.

What happens if you adopt an older dog (2yrs old?) and its resource guarding his food? I've tried slow feeders (as he woofs down his food in a blink of an eye), I've tried feeding from my hand and he bit my hand (simply lunged to get the food). As I was trying to free my hand...he bit my other hand. I've tried "Leave It" and he's lunged and my legs. Great around kids (so long as they don't have food in their hands) and other dogs (so long as they don't get near his bowl). He growls, snarls and snaps in your direction if you get too close to his food bowl. I did not know this until after I adopted him and brought him home. Now what? ***Edited to add that this dog was euthanized by the adoption center I got him from as he was deemed "high risk" of biting.***

@@hannahgrimsley7033 We worked with him for months. He would progress and then BAM! back to growling, snarling and snapping if anyone got to close to his food bowl. After getting bit a few times I decided it was best to return him to the adoption center as I was very concerned about the little ones getting bit. I could envision him just snatching whatever they had in their little hands. The adoption center euthanized him as they had not been aware of this problem and deemed him "a high risk" and "potential danger" to the adopter & family.
