If you're from Europe, just hop in that car of yours and go there. You have a car to enjoy that type of freedom, so if money isn't too big of an issue and you have a day or two of spare time, what's holding you back? Don't say your partner - they'll be fine ;)

I’m a disabled driver, no right leg after an IED in Afghanistan, I drive crossed up with my left foot only. Hand controls were not for me. It’s great to see other enthusiasts out there doing what we love. It’s tough sometimes not being able to trail brake, and I miss motorcycles very much, but it has made me very smooth in settling the car into turns.

@@killeralltires surly there are better hand controls like a PlayStation steering wheel. That would be cool 😎 👍🏻. I’m not a fan of the push and pull system it looks a bit shite.
@killeralltires
@killeralltires Жыл бұрын
@@shrewsnose1 I agree the push pull systems are horrid for driving feel around corners as you can only really have one hand on the wheel. I use a suicide knob as well to be able to go lock to lock on the wheel easily and that helps a ton around town too. Most new cars these days use an electronic throttle hand control opposed to the fully manual linkage my van came with. There's one that I saw recently that's a ring that is inset of the steering wheel and connectors electronically so you can have your throttle control at your thumb tips and can keep both hands on the wheel. If I ever get the finances for a different car that's the control style I feel like I want.

With the technology we possess nowadays, i find it really strange that nobody has replaced these levers with fully digital controls. It should be really easy. Since the throttle is now digitally controlled, the manufacturers could add an analogue trigger button on the steering wheel, like the ones XBOX gamepads have. They work really well. That way the driver would be able to operate the throttle directly from the steering wheel and use his free arm to operate the brakes. Or they could take things one step further by installing an electronically controlled mechanism (like ball screw stepper motor) that pushes the brake pedal, and operates with a trigger button as well. The sky is the limit.

Huge kudos. I'm not disabled and I'd personally really enjoy those hand controls. Maybe it's because I grew up riding dirt bikes w/ wrist throttle and ATV's with thumb throttle but it seems like you could get some really good control with the hand throttle/brake.. Turns would be obviously be difficult though, as it seems to look in the vid.

It gives me a sense of better car control by eliminating the unloaded time. It's not necessarily faster, because on a bumpy surface you may better use your left foot to hold yourself in the seat.
@AliceC993
@AliceC993 Жыл бұрын
Not a track or professional driver by any means (though I do have many hours of seat time with racing sims for what little that is worth), but I've found it largely depends on the pedal box arrangement. In some cars, it's more "ergonomic" for lack of better words to brake with your left foot, especially in situations where you have to react quickly, than trying to juggle throttle/brake with your right and having your left foot more or less idle unless you're actively changing gears.

I don't need a wheelchair , and that's probably fairly lucky on my part because my shoulder is the problem not my legs . I'm a 51 year old who had a class 2 shoulder separation when I was 26 years old . The doctor told me then that I'd be lucky lift a coffee cup to my mouth with my right arm . And well I have done a hell of a lot better than the doctors thought I would . I'm stuck working behind the counter at a gas station because that's about all I can do physically . And as someone who works at a gas station I certainly don't make enough money to be able to afford a track car .
