A trained occupational, physical, or speech therapist may teach you to do oral motor exercises on your baby to help with the tongue, cheek and lip range of motion, strength, and coordination. A trained lactation consultant may also have you do some suck training exercises to help baby become more efficient at the breast. Babies are VERY good communicators. We want them to be active participants in therapy where everything in their mouth is a pleasant experience. Baby should be in a quiet, awake, alert state and ready to Olay and participate. If baby is upset, pushing you away, or crying, that is not a good time to do exercises. Respect their cues. Stop and either try at a different time. If they’re consistently refusing, the exercises may be too hard for your baby and you may need to back off or back down to easier exercises first. If you’re doing exercises and your baby is always struggling, consult back to the professsional who prescribed them in the first place.
This video is mean for education purposes only. Exercises should be done under the direct supervision of a trained therapist or IBCLC as the needs of every baby are different.
