I’m not a nurse or RT but I filled both roles for a family member for 3 years. Her mom had only a few hours of help per week when they hired me to help. (The kids father was abusive to the mother so he refused to allow more nurses in the home because he “didn’t like strangers in his house”. I had a severely disabled sibling I’d helped with and I babysat/did respite for multiple other severely disabled kids, plus I wasn’t a stranger so the guy couldn’t bitch about me being hired!) The random vent alarms freaked me so hardcore for the first two months. By the end, I was handling O2s dropping into the 40s solo. Suction, cough assist, hook up in-line neb, turn on vest, agitate patient to keep her awake and focused…. I think the longest haul of it I handled solo was over an hour. If I was in constant motion, I kept her at 85 which was fine for her on a very bad day. Her mom got home 5 minutes after it corrected itself and I collapsed, exhausted. Let’s just say the girl kept us on our toes! Once the parents divorced and more nurses were hired, it was nice to see actual RNs just as drained at the end of a tough shift. I didn’t feel so incompetent anymore.

An RT changed the way I think about my asthma and saved me so many panic attacks as well as got me on the straight and narrow as an adult with asthma. I never realized how life changing their coaching was until I was out of the hospital. I told them thank you for their care, sincerely, at the time but I continued to benefit long after I was out. So in case you didn’t get to hear it, I’m sure you did the same for patients as well. ❤

Unfortunately the first Respiratory therapist I ever met did everything she could to stop me from learning intubation and many other things in the ICU. It got to the point where the head of the department and second in charge had to reprimand her. It was so passive aggressive I didn't think anyone will even notice. Anyway I went to the OR and met some very kind anesthesiologist who gave me the opportunity to learn.

@pinkgorilla99
@pinkgorilla99 6 ай бұрын
@@Eagles883 I absolutely love it. I worked in a large hospital and got a lot of experience in every dept….ER, open heart recovery, ICU and of course the regular floors. I then moved to an LTAC and we had an intense protocol to get patients off the ventilator because they hadn’t been successful in the ICU. The patients all were on ventilators, had tracheotomy, usually feeding tubes and dialysis. We had a really high success rate and it was very satisfying to see patients that had been so sick be able to wean off all the life support and be able to get back to their life. The only draw back I can say is as I get older it’s harder to do the 12-16hr shifts and there aren’t many options to work outside of the hospital like there are with nursing.

@@pinkgorilla99 Thank you for your feedback. There’s alot of people that speak positive on the field. But most of the seasoned RRTs that have 15+ years of experience are negative about it. I know that there’s pros and cons to everything, but it’s good to hear good feedback. In my state, I see job listings for clinical, lab, rehabilitation, home, remote, and even retail settings for Respiratory Therapist. So when people say the options are limited, I wonder if it varies by state.

@@Eagles883 you’re very welcome. I think that a lot of people that have been in their field for 15+ yrs do get disgruntled. Plus, healthcare has been especially stressful for the last several years so I can see how you have heard negative comments. Especially, considering the C19 was mostly effecting people with respiratory issues, it was a very stressful time. I do admit that I live in a small, rural city so jobs of every kind are limited. I’m glad to hear there are more opportunities for respiratory in other areas. Overall, I think from my personal experience, Respiratory Therapy is a very rewarding career choice and like all things, it is what you make of it. Thank you for your response :) Happy New Year! 🎊

In belgium we dont have rt, the nurses give the nebulizers and fix the ventilator alarms themselfs (if needed with the docters depending on the alarm)

Poor intern. I'm not a medical professional but both of those are such easy fixes it's unreal! (I was a carer for my mum who had severe respiratory issues for years and regularly freaked out nurses by doing suction/nebs for her while visiting the icu).
