I wonder why people think casca being raped is the sole reason she turned vegetable, not the cosmic horror monsters performing the act in the presence of evil gods and all her friends getting slaughtered by otherworldly beings in brutal ways just in front of her eyes, one even sacrificing himself for her just before giving an emotional good bye and confession of lve. The Eclipse is probably like 70 world shattering, life ruining, existential, (meta)physical and emotional traumas at once, yet people only focus on the rape.

For me the speed and luck that griffith has when accomplishing his goals after being revived was sooo unrealistic and uncanny, it has this almost artificial feel too it. But I think that's intentional and honestly a good thing within the context of berserk. It really feels like he's coming from that omnipotent godhand level literally going through a story he himself produced through causality to make his dream happen. If this sort of plot and story telling were happening to anyone else besides griffith (like the review guy wants) it would be the most phoned in, bad story telling thing you could do to any of the other main cast.
@Yul_B_Awright3 жыл бұрын
@@Ziggerath isn't it kind of a part of the power of godhand to read causality and use it to their advantage or even manipulate it slightly? @@Yul_B_Awright the thing about causality in berserk is that it is pretty clearly uncertain which in my opinion with what we know about the God hand basically just implies that it's their conscious effort to shape reality into what they want. So basically all of causality as the series puts it is manipulated, like when Conrad controls rats to spread plague and shit. It's why guts can do shit in the first place. Because it's not actually set at all, it happens as it happens, it unfolds. The idea of evil chapter although not explicitly Canon basically confirms this in that causality is not separate from the idea of evil as it states that it weaves the fate of mankind and humans, only coming into existence because of their original underlying will. This will is still present, and the famous line by void is actively disproven by guts and his actions which seems to be what the story is even about. The original proposition by void being ultimately destroyed over the course of the tale by guts and his rejection of causality and embrace of free will and self determining ability.

That was an incredibly contradictory review that also gets several details wrong. First of all, the writer complains about Guts and Casca having no character development, which they do, particularly in recent chapters, which makes sense, since the series is likely nearing its conclusion, and character arcs tend to get resolved/change as the third act approaches. Then praises Griffith, the character who, for justifiable reasons, has stopped developing/can't develop because of who he now is, a literal God-like figure consumed by his single-minded obsession with power. The writer misses the point of how Guts (and Casca) are Griffith's opposite that way, Griffith is what Guts could have become, giving in to his dark desires at the cost of everything, and is struggling to resist in a way Griffith never bothered to, hence why they are such perfect foils of each other, in similarities and difference. Also, about the "damsel in distress" thing, Guts certainly protects Casca and she is his fire for his motivations, but it is actually two other female characters who directly bring Casca back from her trauma, which I found to be a pretty relevant and "modern" way of constructing a story of a woman dealing with sexual violence and trauma. That whole section of the manga literally deals with Casca's emotions from the Eclipse as well, readdressing their point about the ignoring of Casca's trauma, so I guess the writer didn't pay attention to this section? Then again, the writer clearly hates the new characters, who BTW are more balanced in terms of the gender makeup of the "party", and unlike many other manga/anime women, actually do help with fights. Luca was a cool character, but Schierke and especially Farnese get way more character development. Literally, I don't know how you can look at a character like Farnese and not find complex debates and themes about religion, identity, and redemption, literally "ideology" as the writer demands to have in their stories. I think the writer just was blown away by the Golden Age Arc like so many, and is stuck on it, plus like you said Ryan, the pace of the publishing can effect peoples' reading of the pacing of the story as a whole, unfortunately. The last couple of chapters, as you said, taken collectively have actually ramped up lore and world-building and character development pretty significantly.
@timbreakradio3 жыл бұрын
This was a very intriguing read, thank you for your thoughts!
@yusukeelric3 жыл бұрын
The entire initial point of Farneze joining in was that Guts couldn't handle Casca, he didn't have the patience to fight the curse demons and at the same time protecting the cursed/traumatized Casca. Farneze also needed a humble pie. And the way to redeem herself on a humane way was to stick to casca and be always there for her. If it wasn't for Farneze Casca would have never cured of the curse. And Schierke is to Guts what Farneze is to Casca. Schierke is not only a lore dump, wich she is. But also the only one who can keep guts inner darkness in check when he needs to control the armor and not the opposite. Guts would be dead or a mindless killing machine by now if it wasn't for Schierke. And casca was never a damsel in distress. She deals pretty good in battle. Only that 2 meters tall demons is a lot for anyone, including the entirety of the hawks, only guts could equal a demon. So if casca becomes a damsel in distress in that case is because in an unfair situation like that, The entirety of the hawks were damsels in distress at that point of the story where they dealt with a giant demon and guts could barely deal with it after a lot of injuries and near death.

This is a great idea for a video topic, Ryan. The reference to d--k wolves in the first review is most likely a shorthand for mystical creatures whose defining characteristic is assaulting women. So, while no literal phallus-wielding wolves appeared in the series, the infamous horse and the trolls would qualify as d--k wolves. The term entered pop culture after a webcomic called Penny Arcade made a joke about the creatures. The actual name of the creatures is probably tied to TV producer Dick Wolf, who created the Law & Order franchise.

I hate trying to argue with people on how cascas rape is handled in the manga. People legimately think the entire manga is bad because the rape is detailed/sexualized. I think these people miss the part that Griffith is sexualizing the rape intentionally. Note that the positions he puts casca in are the same as in the book kama sutra book he shows guts? He's trying to make guts angry, he's trying to hurt him and make him feel powerless, and he's trying to force a physical reaction out of casca to hurt guts. And yes, it's horrifying and it makes you angry and i believe 100% the scene is meant to invoke that kind of anger. And I do feel like something is lost in the story if the scene is toned down like in the 97 anime. The 97 eclipse is still horrific, sure, but compare your anger watching that to when you read it and I'm certain one is going to get a stronger reaction out of the viewer. And I believe that's the point. I dunno if I've ever felt stronger emotions reading something than when I read the eclipse. And that's why I think it's so good.

@@Egg_of_the_King well said, but griffith was still conflicted on his feelings for guts before the eclipse and he was only convinced to sacrifice him and the band of the hawk because the godhand leveraged the guilt he held for the corpses he had piled up already, (like the child with the toy knight.) Griffith felt guilt and shame for his actions when he began chasing his dream, so he closed himself off to his emotions as a defense mechanism, but there were cracks in the facade that formed when enough force was applied, as shown throughout the Golden age. Guts was the one thing that eventually shattered the facade when he defeated griffith and left the band, and since griffith was so disassociated with his emotions that he almost failed to recognize what they really were. This, given a year to fester in the dungeon, lead to Griffiths psyche before the eclipse being comprised of a swirl of conflicting emotions focused on guts, with vitriol and jealousy at the forefront, shown when he throws himself onto Casca. Then, in the eclipse, the godhand convinced griffith to sacrifice the band of the hawk through guilt, because the bodies he stacked up would all be for nothing if he didn't keep going. Finally, after he becomes Femto, he has embraced his darkest emotions and is freed from all guilt and shame, now the strongest emotions left are the vile ones he has for guts. He acts on these by raping casca and forcing guts to watch. It's not that he never cared about guts or the band of the hawk, it was the feelings he couldn't suppress that were his downfall.

Since we're on the topic of controversial opinions i have one very hot take, concerning the berserker armor and how to me it is the most dissapointing subject of the manga for me. Im a new fan of the series and have finished the manga for the first time recently and am proud to call myself a berserk fan. While i was reading it the thing i was most excited for was the armor as ive seen it in pictures and thought it was a cool and unique power up. My issue is that the armor is used as just a means of power up to get Guts out of a situation he normally couldnt handle. Thats fine and all but the armor felt shallow given the context the manga was leading up to at that point. The berserker armor numbs out his feelings of pain and fear as well as buffing his physical abilities, but it manifests his anger and evil as a balance, which Guts is currently haunted by. Guts is the perfect character to show this armor and what it can cause, so why do we never really see this evil side? Think about it, most berserker mode moments i can think of were showing off his inhuman physical abilities, but never really his evil. I fell in love with Guts character from day one because of this evil side he had, that he was complex. Guts before the armor shows to be far more evil and savage and unpredictable than berserker mode, here are some examples: 1. Assaulting and possibly raping Casca 2. Attempting to Kill Jill in the process of killing rosine twice due to his blind rage 3. Guts enduring the flames in the rosine fight with sheer rage 4. Guts washes down the flames with child blood and fluids and has a dead child around him, showing an immoral monster appearance 5. Guts gets chased by Farnese and her knights like a wild animal 6. All of his fights pre-berserker armor made him feel like a monster as he was fighting things far superior to humans and he would practically die eachtime he fought one, but his rage and determination prevailed, he seemed inhuman. Guts is in a state of self healing and trusting others again, as well as not seeing the world from just hate and vengeance. The berserker armor should bring back those dark thoughts and bring back the old Guts x10. That way when he does get possesed by the armor there is some serious danger concerning his party or people around him. This way a long comment sorry lol, i had to explain for saying such a claim. Point is the armor feels just like a power boost that is depleting Guts life, but if the armor is a manifestation of his inner evil than can we see more of that as we did in early berserk?

If we understand that OP dropped out halfway through a reread, his complaint makes sense. If Berzerk has a flaw (and like you said, it does have a few), it's getting a little bogged down in the middle. There's definitely a point in the Conviction arc where it *feels* like "this is it, this is the Dragonball-esque status quo for the rest of the story, the author can drag this out forever" and then, like ten years and three entire arcs later he's only just getting to the third act, so like... it's kinda hard to blame people for getting bored and dropping out. The problem with chapter by chapter writing is that you get no editor, no second draft, and there *is* padding sometimes when you have a deadline and you've gotta put out *something* and there *was* a bit there where he was still trying to hit reasonable deadlines and the writing suffered. It's why he stopped trying to hit them. Instead of ten chapters of filler and two chapters of plot, we get two chapters a year; he learned that lesson the hard way though, and the evidence is there in the text. Everything from Conviction to Fantasia could badly do with a rewrite and editing tighten up, and like two hundred hour RPGs that "totally get good at the forty hour mark" you either have to decide to swallow that bullet or not. So iunno. As far as bad takes go, I've seen worse. I'd encourage the dude to go back and try again, just push through the rough spots, it doesn't *actually* stay like that as long as it feels like it's going to. But I get where he's coming from at least.
@jessielefey3 жыл бұрын
I even get where he's coming from with the girls. Though I know this is gonna come off as more controversial. The manga has been going on forever, and it's starting to show its age, and one of the ways it does that worst is the very, like, eighties way it looks at its girls. They aren't bad *characters* but they're very much a product of their time and they're very exhausting *tropes* if you can grok the difference. What was cool and groundbreaking female character writing in 1990 has gotten *very* played out now. There's lots of things that have gotten to where Berzerk is going with its ladies, did it better, and then iterated on it already before Berzerk even finished. The Berzerk ladies are good examples of their tropes, but the tropes themselves are very played out at this point, and I can't blame people for being tired of Those Kinds Of Stories even though *this* version of those stories are very good. The Warrior Woman Broken By Trauma, The Too Masculine Evangelical Who Finds Peace By Learning To Be Nurturing And Feminine, The Whore With A Heart Of Gold, christ even The Literal Goddess is right there in its more standard model 1990 forms. It's not 1995 anymore. It's not even 2015 anymore. Kinda the same problem Game Of Thrones has now, like, even if the ending is good its *not* gonna be as good as if it was finished when it was supposed to. That's, like, just a fact of time passing, and again you've either gotta accept the story for what it is or don't, and I can't blame anyone that doesn't.

1 Thing about the Eclipse rape; we should have been shown her inner thoughts we should have had her inner monologue like we fucking did with Guts being assaulted by Donovan. I mean we don't see any of the female perspective aside from maybe Jill what they are feeling. Is it anger? Hate? Swearing a bloody vengeance? I don't know it seems like we need some inner dialogue for. And yes ,Caska does react and speak during the horrific scene, but it isn't enough. And if you think that this somehow is irrational then why are we only shown Guts reaction and his POV?Yes it is important to showcase his emotions but lets not forget who's the on-going rape victim here. I might be asking too much given how horrific and utterly vile it is in that arc ,but my point is that it was monstrous for both of them and i think it is imperative to want more or just enough when the victims of rape are women.

The writer main mistake. is that Berserk is not a Shonen. It's a seinen. It deals with more mature themes than Shonen mangas. But the writer of this article seems to zoom any character development episode and go straight to the fights. Forgetting the character development scenes are build up to most of the fights. And sometimes the fights themselves are build up for later character development. See lost children. While there are definitely filler fights in Berserk , they are a minority. Miura could easily put some fights in the dreaded ship arc. But didn't because Berserk is NOT a shonen, there doesn't need to be a fight every 2 episodes. Most of Guts fights in Berserk are of a huge meaning to Guts, Everytime he needs to activate the armor there is new development for Guts to get out of its effect. if you zoom trough the fights you later don't understand their meaning in the story.
@GabyGeorge19963 жыл бұрын
About the homoerotic subtext, I’d have to personally disagree about your takeaway. Considering that Guts and Griffith’s dynamic appears to be very heavily lifted from that of Akira Fudo and Ryou Asuka/Satan from Devilman (both pairs consist of evil-fighting dark-haired males fighting evil in a crapsack world who embody the trope of Dark Is Not Evil whose primary adversary is a light-haired bishonen with avian motifs (compare Satan’s multiple pairs of Angel wings with Griffin’s name and the Band of the Hawk) with whom the protagonist used to be close to but whom the protagonist no longer considers his friend after the Bishonen’s true goals were revealed; culminating in the revelation that there’s a greater-scope villian in supplementary materials (God in Devilman Lady and The Idea of Evil in Berserk)), I’d say there’s *Definitely* homoerotic subtext. The biggest difference between the characters is that Akira lived a happy life prior to gaining his powers at the start of the story whereas Guts’s life was always shitty from even before he was born; while Satan only really became a threat once his amnesia/identity of Ryou Asuka was lifted Griffith was always blinded by ambition and the warning signs that he would turn into the monster he eventually became were always there (mostly in the form of the crimson behelit)

3 lines. It took 3 lines for this writer to miss the point of Guts and Griffith relationship. Not only in japan nudity back in the 80's was treated more natural. This is a dark ages inspired series. But also at no point in the series it was suggested that the infatuation of Griffith towards Guts was sexual at all. And yes, there is an infatuation from Griffith to Guts Grifffith never accepts, but it's more an neglectful brother love than a lover one, confused with commander and soldier. If the writer would have read the manga until the end of golden arc he would fully understand Griffith repressed real emotions towards Guts wich are of love. mixed with hate. Something brothers feel constantly towards each other. And these emotions are clouded by ambition. But at no point is it suggested, Griffith loves Guts in sexual way but like close family. To me the writer understands only the hollywood meaning of love, wich its wrong here. And this is just the first 3 lines.

Berserk is one of the few pieces of fiction that could be said to be the closest to being flawless because of how full of flaws the characters are. The amount of times I read a manga only too see someone say they are dropping it because the MC did a mistake is mindblowing, and it mirrors society of today perfectly, how everybody has to be percect and no matter how much good you do, if you fuck up once, you are send to the gallows. Everybody wants to be perfect which initself is a paradox, because flaws make us human.

I disagree about the parent take for a simple reason. Griffith never wanted guts to grow up. I mean he wanted him to be his friend, but at the same time he wanted guts to be his best soldier. To me Griffith saw guts as a brother, not as a son to take care of. He already saw guts as his equal in a certain way. But couldn't accept it. If Griffth wanted to be Guts father, he would give guts the same treatment he gave to the hawks. The Hawks are Griffith kids in a way. But guts goes beyond that for Guts. Thing is Griffith represses his love for Guts , in one case because of his ambitions. But in the other, i just think Griffith can't really understand the concept of love. He feels it towards the Hawks and Guts, and the Hawks know it, but i don't think Griffith knows it. Because where others see love he sees a means to an end. And his reaction, when he loses against guts is of someone with tons of emotions crumbling down and a lost sense of control , and he can't take it anymore, wich leads to what happens next. In short, to me Griffith already saw Guts as an equal, as a brother, when Guts left. But repressed that emotion because reaching his goals was more important to him. ironically that caring side he tried so hard to repress whas what attracted the Hawks to begin with. Only that he probably didn't want to accept it.

@willhornsby2063 жыл бұрын
Well it is hinted that Casca was raped by the Apostles, then Griffith (which we saw) after watching everyone she knew except Rickett, Guts and Griffith die as Rickett wasnt there, Guts was fighting to try and save Griffith and fighting for his life and Griffith became Femto. But Oh shes totally just a rape victim its not like she watched everyone she knew die to demonic monster and couldn't even fight back properly and watched the guy she loves cut off his own arm just to try and save her before other apostles gouge out his eye so that the last thing he sees in that eye is Casca's rape. But yeah not like the eclipse fucked her mind only Griffith's rape did. Guts grew up as a man afraid of trusting others due to Donovan and Gambino's actions when Guts was a kid. he began to trust others and wanted Griffith to see him as a equal so he set out in finding his own dream which happened to be being with The Band of Hawk. Griffith had ruined everything because he didnt understand why Guts had left and couldn't handle the leaving of Guts and his defeat properly. doesnt help that the king is a nasty dude who wanted his daughter to himself. Guts found out about what happened and rushed to his friends aid and he and Casca finally got together after Guts relived some trauma and cried about the fact that he murdered his adoptive father which is understandable as Guts didnt have time to mourn always running and always fighting for his next meal. Griffith tried to strangle Guts something only 1 person noticed and Griffith hated that the only reason Casca was going to stay was because of Griffith and he didnt like that he lost 2 of his best. Griffith liked the fact that Casca wanted to be his sword as it meant he had control and he had lost that and tried forcing his dominance back only to be regected. Guts after the Eclipse only wants to kill Griffith and sets out for two years killing every apostle who had killed The Hawks and regresses back to his state before being with the hawks. Only when he realizes that his dream is still there and that he must protect the one he loves thanks to his kid that Femto corrupted telling him that Casca is in danger. And Guts becomes more accepting of people not trusting himself alone with Casca after the Beast of Darkness took over and almost caused Guts to pull a Femto. And then the real Hawks go to Elfeim while Griffith creates the false band of the hawk and fucks up the entire world but gains his kingdom. But yeah Guts totally doesnt grow as a character. TLDR: Casca aint just a rape victim and yes guts does grow as a person and yeah they are either a Troll or just ignored everything

The writers could have tried to make some improvement to the Berserk anime 2016, I mean they've been focusing too much on Guts and Casa more as well as their allies while Princess Charlette only made one appearance in one episodes and then after that only mention her name few times. The writers could have adapted the more episodes and scenes from the Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc manga to show Princess Charlette imprison in Tower of Rebirthwith being rescue and reunited with Griffith because that would make a lot more sense in each of the episodes rather leaving it at the end of episode 3 were Midland was invaded by the Kushan Empire . To be honest the writers haven't though through these story lines plans before Berserk anime 2016 was released and at the end of season 2 they left the cliffhangers. That way they can focus on Griffith and Princess Charlotte being reunited and restore Midland to it's former Glory after defeating Emperor Ganishka.

Like everyone else has said, Berserk is not perfect, but damn do i enjoy it. In all honesty I feel like some people take popular manga and find every little thing that's not perfect and amplify it just to give them a reason to not like it cause they think it'll make them better than everyone else who enjoys it even with the flaws. And a lot of the negative reviews seem along the lines of " ha you like this popular thing, well i think it's bad cause blah blah blah, and the creator should just give up and i clearly know better than an artist who has been doing this as a living for years/decades."

After my recent rewatch of the anime, I went back and went through the entire manga. There's honestly an unpalatable amount of sexual assault. That's my only complaint.
