Response to comments about husky afraid of floors #huskies #dogvideos

My husky, Levi, is afraid of the floors. I posted a video sharing this and asking for insight, and while I got a ton of great ideas and feedback from everyone, I also got a lot of hate.
Levi is a healthy, 3 year old husky with no vision or hip issues. As a dog mom, I just want to give him the best life imaginable, which is why I'm being patient and working with him to help him overcome his fear of the floors.

I think the obvious solution is to buy a house without floors and just levitate wherever you need to go, or possibly replace all the floors with gravel or dry grass :)

My daughter had a black lab that was also afraid of the wood and tile floors. She did what you are doing slowly, getting her comfortable to walk on any floor.. What would happen if you were at a friends if they have wood and or tile floors dog would be terrified? It would still be an issue. Slowly showing her it is safe over time instead of reinforcing the fear by using rugs. Yes by all means give her a rug or bed to feel safe.you can put the floor right in front of her on the start floor and as she gets comrtable move the bed father back until she van walk it herself.stay strong MAMA do what you think is best for your dog.

Helping a dog overcome their fears is incredibly hard and painstaking. Kudos on you for all your hard work. My rescue was terrified of clicks like from a lighter or a stove because he was burned by one (he still bears a scar on his nose). It took almost 6 months for him not to run away from those sounds. We could not walk more than 5 feet outside of the house because outside was terrifying (he was close to a year old when he was finally cleared to be walked outside). He was scared of being petted (still is if I am being honest but I can at least scratch him all over when he is expecting it).

People make huge leaps in logic based on 30 second videos, their opinions mean nothing. We rescued our 8 year old husky and she was an absolute mess when we got her. Caused thousands of dollars of property damage if we left her alone bc she was an anxious mess. People told us to give her up after like 1 week. After working on her, figuring out her needs and making her comfortable, now she is a perfect angel. Rescues are a project and responsibility, but seeing them thriving after all the hard work is one of the greatest feelings in the world

My previous dog and current one are both rescues from abusive homes, and after a time of a lot of patience, training, love, and care, they turned out to be the best companions. After their third and possibly last chance to be adopted, they found their forever home where they were and are forever spoiled. It was a bumpy road, but worth every single bump and I wouldn't change a thing. 😊

My cavalier king charles is the same way! We built a new house and it took weeks for her to get comfortable with the floors. We patiently carried her, coaxed her and rewarded her. She’s a full blown pampered princess from day one.

Mine just doesn’t like any surface where he can’t be 110% sure of his footing. Anything shiny is immediately highly suspect. He doesn’t like wet sand that feels solid at first but washes out when a wave comes in either.

Grippy pawpad stickers and trimming the paw hair way short made a huge decrease in slippage on hardwood, tile, laminate, etc, and thus made it easier for the humans to work with their pups to overcome the fear of slippery flooring.

Some dogs are just prone to being anxious about new and uncomfortable things. I have a 100lb pyr mix that is the same way; anytime I change something in the routine, it's a new months long issue.

Yep, I have a boxer/gsp mix who is also a rescue dog and anxiety is just part of who he is. He loses his mind when I do yoga or any type of workout in front of him as an example. Why? I have absolutely zero idea, but it’s not something I can “train” out of him. Unless you have raised a dog with severe anxiety you do not understand how difficult It can be at times, It takes a lot of love, compassion and patience to work with them to slowly let go of their fear.

My training facility actually has a checklist of experiences to give your puppies, including a bunch of different floor types. Basically because they are more likely to be confused/concerned/scared by a new floor texture of they never were introduced to it in their formative years. But an old dog CAN learn new tricks, so it's crazy that some people seem to think he's just doomed to a no floor future.

My dad once told me that some of his most painful experiences in life were not from his military service, but from picking up my sisters or me after we fell and “making” us try again. My dog Chardonnay is terrified of metal. Metal grates, metal stairs etx. I have had home since he was a puppy no trauma. Some dogs have phobias and it's OK.

Just getting spooked once can be enough to cause such fear, or there may have been one time where walking over grated floors/stairs hurt more than normal and it caused such an issue, some dogs just are really sensitive to things like that. It's important to take notice of those things so you can help your dog get over their fears and also make the conscious decisions to avoid the things that the dog is scared of when needed.

After years of rescuing adult dogs who were terrified of grooming, we got the opportunity to rescue a seven week old Maltese puppy who had no experience, and therefore no traumas, with grooming. So we started early, like you're supposed to, with the softest human baby brush, rewarding and praising him throughout, only doing tiny minute long sessions at first and building slowly. Despite our best intentions and efforts, little Hamish acted like grooming was a trigger for that fictional time he was beaten with a brush and drowned in the tub! I will always work hard to help my dogs overcome any anxiety they have, because no one wants them to live in fear, but sometimes they just have quirks and hate things for no logical reason. Just like humans!

I'm a bad dogmom, too. I couldn't walk one of my Border Collie for a year because he had 0 self-control and had 0 idea on how to dog when I adopted him at 3 years old. On day one, he had separation anxiety when I turned my back to him. Now, after working hard with him for 2 years, he's the one that listens the most and is 1000% happier than when I got him. You focus on your life! I have 2 rescued pittie mixes. Both were abused and each has issues. One is afraid to walk on the floor so we put down rugs EVERYWHERE! They’re both terrified to walk through doors so I have to open the door and back away until they feel safe to go outside. That’s just a couple of examples. Don’t get me started on the ac/heat noises and nightlights. ❤😂🙌🤗

My family has a rescue dog who'd never been allowed inside other than in a kennel, he was terrified of walking through doors. Taking hin out to pee was a very long process because of how long it took to get him to come inside again and sometimes we'd give up and carry him in. Two years later he never even thinks about it, just so happy and confident.

It is likely that he is afraid of floors because he has not seen much of them when he was a puppy: never got desensitized when it was easier for him to learn. He can still learn, but it's normal that it takes more time. Maybe he got a bad experience with floors in the past as well, who knows, he's a rescue! You gotta work with them, when you don't know what sort of abusive past they went through.

My lab was TERRIFIED of our kitchen floor and basement stairs when we first brought her home when she was a year and a half old. She had never been abused or anything, but for some reason hated our floors and stairs. Most of our house is carpeted, so it wasn't a huge deal. She eventually just got over it though lol. She is now a pro at floors and stairs at 2 years old 👏🏻
