They really are a fantastic eye catching design. I find the price challenging though, considering the materials and movement.

Grade 5 titanium very much scratches, and rather easily too. Regardless, this is way overpriced for an ETA movement and no WR. Also no bracelet to justify a chunk of the cost. Cool design though.

Grade 5 titanium are one of the more sratch resistant materials out there, compared to stainless steel or gold. Also, he said the reason it doesn't scratch is because it's almost entirely sapphire. There is way more engineering go into this watch rather than just the movement. It is certainly a very cool design, but it's not something you can just think "That would be cool" and then just do it. As for the reason why it's so expensive, it's probably because it's a very unique watch. Most of it's components are very non-standard so they will have to make it themselves using a completely unique manufacturing process with specialized equipment. That will certainly jack up the price compared to something that have already been mass produced and only need slight adjustments between each models.

@ grade 5 titanium is just an alloy, 6Al4V, it's everywhere in knives, which I collect. There's nothing particularly scratch resistant about it. Steel is such a broad term it makes no sense to talk about it without specifying what steel. A typical austenitic steel case you find on omegas or rolexes is soft af. A hardened high carbon tool steel will be very hard, on the other hand. Gold is not scratch resistant at all, it's very soft, not sure where you got that. As for the Ressence, it's very cool and something different, but I don't see the appeal for the price. At 10k, 15k tops, maybe. This is really outrageous.

@johnnysilverhand1733 There's a reason why they don't use high carbon steel tho. It rusts incredibly easy. Grade 5 titanium are one of the most sratch resistant materials that can be considered using on a watch. Also, the entirely of the watch industry is overpriced if you considered the fact that a casio will beat any of the high-end models in time telling. 1k are often considered the "budget" for getting into watches but do you know how much can I buy with 1k? It's no small amount of money. This is not a price they just decided on for no reason, it's just that expensive. Unlike Rolex, which the price tag mostly come from brand recognition and manufacturing cost is way way lower. You wanting the watch for that price or not is entirely dependent on you.

@ i didn't say they should use those steels, just that "steel" in general is meaningless and hardness varies greatly in the steel world. Since you mentioned it, I will say they shouldn't be using what they *are* using nonetheless - there's a whole universe between softy 904L and 316L and some high speed non-stainless steel. What they're using is garbage, for the money they're charging. Titanium is not scratch resistant at all, there's no two ways about it, whether it's pure grade 2 titanium or some alloy. I'm wearing a scratched up FXD and a small Sebenza with a million scratches on its grade 5 titanium handle. Ceramic is very scratch resistant, on the other hand. Again, the point isn't that luxury timepieces are a bad value, the point is that within the world of poor value, obsolete mechanical trinkets, Ressence is still wildly overpriced. By overpriced I don't mean the price reflect some extremely greedy margins; I'm sure they'd price it better if they could. I'm saying 38k for this watch makes no sense considering the competition in the same price range. This watch would do far better in the 10-15k range; too bad they can't do it. You're also delusional about rolex - no, the price doesn't come from brand recognition. Prices are not arrived at arbitrarily, except in socialism and communism. Learn Price Theory.

@johnnysilverhand1733 You think you know better than the entire industry? Well, give me 10 examples that can be put into production right now. And it's sratch resistant, not sratch proof. Anything will sratch when come into contact with harder materials. Also, the reason why ceramic is not widely used is because it's incredible fragile and can shatter. A stainless steel watch will likely need a costly service after one bad drop, but ceramic? Your entire watch gone. Also, you will see what I'm talking about if you look at Rolex's price in particular and the entire industry as a whole in the past 20 years. Capitalism only works until big corporations start banding together and all raise their prices, which we can do nothing about. It's not like we can just stop buying food if it gets too expensive.
