"Rest" | Eileen Walker

Anxiety is more than common in this day and age. Worry has consumed my generation.
I experienced anxiety for the first time during my junior year of high school. I was so afraid that I was in disobedience to God. I felt like I couldn’t discern His voice and I wasn’t in His will. I was so worried to mess up God’s plans for my life!
However, the one thing I could hear was His still, small voice telling me to “rest.” Rest in His love and in His ability to accomplish His will in my life. That was the sweetest thing to hear, yet hard to do! It felt so wrong and backwards to me. I felt like I had to do, work, and strive. But God was teaching me trust on a whole new level. “I’m resting in Your love for me, I’m resting in Your sovereignty.”
I had written those lyrics years before. I didn’t really know what I was singing then, but it turns out the Lord was prophesying through me for when I would need those words.
Time passed and while I was learning about His kindness, character, and peaceful voice, I rediscovered that line and decided I would make it into a song. I wrote the verse, but it wasn’t until my mom walked in to tell me a friend from school had died that the chorus flowed out: “I don’t have to worry, I don’t have to fear, because I know who You are, I know Your father’s heart, I don’t have to worry, I don’t have to fear, because You said You are able, You said You are near.”
This has become an anthem for me, and I pray it can be for many across the world as well.
Let us trust and rest in the goodness… and good nature… of our God.

This is a beautiful song, Eileen. Praise the Lord for calming your fears through it. What a gift songwriting is! You mentioned that anxiety is more common today and that it has consumed this young generation. While I do believe that this current generation is less-equipped to handle the pressures they are facing, we do need to realize that every generation has had its worries and fears. Yesterday's youth had no fewer causes for anxiety than today's youth. Remember all the wars, diseases, infant deaths, persecutions, etc... from ages past? If we stop to really think about it, we will simply realize that one of the main differences in today's youth and yesterday's youth is that today's youth has more time on their hands to dwell on their fears/anxieties than yesterday's youth. History shows us that yesterday's youth was busy working with their hands and caring for their families. They did not have social media and phones to spend their day looking at...or taking selfies and focusing on self! Yesterday's youth was family/community/other oriented, unlike today's youth who are self-oriented. We can pray for today's youth, that the Lord would set their focus back on the things that really matter in life, rather than on themselves and social media/digital devices, and that He would enable, equip, and empower them to handle anxiety according to His Word. Because you have Christ, He indwells you to help you through your fears. This has been true of all youth for all generations: Those who have Christ have the indwelling of His Spirit and are helped with the fear/anxiety that has plagued our fallen world. But, those without Christ will (and always have) continue to live with fear/anxiety until they surrender to the Savior. Anxiety is not unique to your generation, nor is it more intense for your generation. It is simply an affect of our fallen world, and it can be healed in the heart of mankind when he/she surrenders to Christ Jesus through repentance of sins and putting their trust in Him. Full surrender to the Savior!
