Toriyama pushed me through a time where I was a skinny 14 year constantly being made fun of and being told I was a slow runner on my cross country team (like Goku being a low class warrior). I first started watching on toonami and one of the first episodes I saw was Goku running down snake way as fast as he could to get to King Kai's planet. I remember the music and the determination on Goku's face, and it pushed me to be a stronger and faster individual. I literally remember thinking I would have to stop running and walk during a race because I was so tired, but I told myself inside "NO!" Because I felt like it was something a proud saiyan would do when his back was against the wall, and it helped me finish the race without stopping! Without dragon Ball, I most likely would have quit running and probably regretted it the rest of my life. Thank you so much Akira, you have made a true impact on my life. I'm tearing up now finishing writing this but I just had to get it off my chest. I love you guys

いつもありがとう 家族で泣いた 鳥山先生の作品のおかげで日本語を学び始めて日本に引っ越して住めるようになった本当に、本当に残念です 鳥山明先生のご冥福をお祈りします I very rarely use my account anymore, and even less so to comment with. I've been at a loss over the past 12 hours and didn't know what to say other than what I wrote above on videos about this. But I feel here and Geekdom's channel is as good as anywhere for an addendum to express my gratitude. The full scale of the impact your works had on me and the course of my personal and professional life is impossible to measure accurately. Almost 20 years ago I imagined that one day I might be able to meet you and thank you in your own language. Maybe I could learn something simple and clumsy like ドラゴンボールをありがとうございました and tell you in a heavy American accent. Over the years the knowledge of simple phrases grew into knowledge of simple grammar and vocabulary, then into the ability to communicate and read, and eventually - what started out as wanting to thank the person who put a smile on the face of this awkward kid from Ohio - grew into being able to travel halfway across the world to be with a significant other and live in Japan. When I heard of your passing, the first thing I thought was that I would never have a chance to express my gratitude for the way you influenced me. Despite my language ability progressing so, so much further than I ever expected it to, I'd never have an opportunity to properly thank the person who started me on the path. There's so many things I want to say. I may edit this comment and add more or even repost it as time goes by and I'm able to fully come to terms with it. You probably expected nothing, but in return your influence meant everything. Thank you for having an impact on my life with your story about a country bumpkin with a tail. Thank you for inadvertently setting me on the path I'm on now. Thank you for a legacy that I'll be able to show my own children when they ask what made their dad move so far away from his own country. And until the day I can see you and give you a proper one, thank you for everything. Thank you always. 鳥山明先生、また会える日まで

When my peers bullied me, and my father hit me nonstop, I always had Goku to tell me that you should always look for the good in people. If I am a happy, loving person, who's always trying to be the voice of reason, it's because Goku showed me that we can be better. We can use our strenght to help the needed, we can bring joy and do the right thing. Goku was (is) a cartoon, an anime character, but Toriyama wasn't. It was his voice through Goku, that helped me out, that was always there. Thank you, you showed me a better way

This one hit hard, I was working and on a call when I got notified. Legit had to compose myself. Dragon ball z to me was one of the few happy points in rough period of my childhood. It'll always be my favourite show from my childhood, my favourite anime, ever. My 2 best friends of over 20 years now first bonded playing the Tenkaichi Budokai games together. These are bonds in my life that wouldn't have started without Akira Toriyama's creation. The cartoons before school were the happiest times for me, as it was conversation starters on the playground. Australian kids who grew up in the late 90s early 00s would remember Cheez TV. Peak Cheez TV line up was Digimon, Pokemon & Dragonball Z. I'll never forget everyone losing their minds (myself included) when Goku turned super saiyan for the first time. No show other than maybe the simpsons has impacted me on a level that Dragon Ball has. RIP Akira Toriyama

Every personal story i hear recanted about people's memories of his work and how its affected their life keeps bringing me to tears. I honestly didn't expect for it to hit so hard. I guess it's not only his work and it's meaning, but the reminder of where we were in our lives and where we are now, as well as the reminder of our impermenance and our own mortality which we collectively reflect on in moments like these that make it all the more poigniant.

The man used his artwork and his storytelling to touch the lives of so many around the world. The imprint he left on modern culture is undeniable. For everyone who's found joy reading/watching popular shonen like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, Full Metal Alchemist/Brotherhood and many, many more... Those works aren't readily available for us all to experience... Or possibly even exist without the work he put in and the impact he made. With all that said... Rest in Peace Akira Toriyama. May the grieving hearts of your loved ones heal quickly.
