"There is a huge vacant space which seems to make it easy for populists" The huge vacant space Rory references isn't on the political spectrum - it's in the knowledge levels exhibited by frighteningly large sections of electorates - they appear to be utterly devoid of basic information about complex issues, with disastrous consequences when they elect political leaders pandering to/exploiting such ignorance?
@DeniseWilliams-jr5xo10 ай бұрын
Exactly like the idiots who voted Tory at the last election just because Boris has charisma. Well durbrains where has that got you. The utter stupidity of the electorate is truly frightening.

But it has always been this way. Remember the famous quotation from Churchhill: "The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter". And I am not looking down on others either. I am a very average fairly ignorant voter! 😂
@peterdavidson326810 ай бұрын
@@nicolaiqbal6823 Perhaps but it need not be this way? Imagine for a moment the UK using a different voting system - fully proportional within each multi-member constituency boundary. Voters would have real choice on their ballot paper with many candidates, some of them from the same party. This voting method (Single Transferable Vote) would oblige all voters to find out information (their values, achievements, campaign pledges, etc.) about each candidate - how else could they rank candidates 1,2,3,4,5 without such knowledge. Result; a more informed and engaged electorate, elected representatives held much more accountable, fair election outcomes, more power and influence exerted by voters (collectively and individually). In other words a win-win all round for UK democracy, with the only losers being large organised political parties, which is why they rail against such voting systems whenever the topic makes its way on to the mainstream agenda!
@mrD66M10 ай бұрын
I agree.. once we (society) allow wilful ignorance, "alternative facts", distortions of truth, misinformation, falsehoods etc, into what is supposed to be a democratic argument in good faith, the whole thing is reduced to who is prepared to lie the bigger If a person cannot lie in court lest they be proven to have committed perjury, but another person who will have the most important job in the country can avoid scrutiny and engage in outrageous lies repeatedly, it doesn't say much for democracy.

Maybe you’ve overlooked the President of the Government of Spain? Pedro Sanchez lost Andalucia (traditionally PSOE) in regional elections and the PP (right) and Vox (far right) looked set to form a national government but somehow Pedro Sanchez pulled off a victory by working with the basques and Catalans including the ERC Catalan party that traditionally hates both the PP and PSOE! Spain (in my opinion) dodged a bullet this year. If Vox had done better then for the first time since the mid 70’s the hard right Francosists would have been back in power with PP. As an Obstetrician Semmelweis is someone I teach my students and Junior Drs about. Sadly he is not an isolated case, Thomas Keith introduced a new technique for hysterectomy in the later half of the 19th century which cut mortality from 70% to 8% he was largely ignored for years. When Robert Koch postulated the tuberculosis bacillus caused TB, in the late 19th century he was initially not believed because the bacteria was so prevalent in the environment and mainstream medicine did not believe it could be the cause. And when in 1982 Barry Marshall discovered H Pylori living in the stomach and suggested it was the cause of peptic ulcers the medical establishment did not believe him because everyone knew that nothing can live in acid in the stomach. New ideas are always hard to embrace.

As much as I respect the honesty of Rory's and Alistair's opinions, they are definitely elitists with an elitist mindset, stuck in an elitist bubble. They talk about populism like it's only a negative thing. Populism is basically defined as the interests of ordinary people versus the interests of the elite class. When the elite classes feel their interests are threatened, they reflexively see populism as a bad thing. These two serve as mouthpieces for the elite class. They love "democracy" when it serves their interests, but when it's not serving their intetests, it's the "populists" that are hijacking "democracy". A bit of self righteous arrogance on their part. Doesn't make them bad people, just flawed like everyone else.
