4 years ago, my brother and I were at the top of Mulholland Highway, near a section called the Snake. After doing some spirited runs up and down the snake, we sat at the top and just hung out. 10 minutes passes and Mr. Jay himself rolls up in a classic blue Chrysler. The most honest, humble and nice "hollywood" guy I've ever met. Truly a class act. It was very cool to chat about cars for a few minutes before he went on his way. Nice to meet you Mr. Leno :)

What I love about jay is the fact the he doesn’t boast or brag about what he has accomplished about the cars he’s gotten done. He always throws the appreciation to the people working for him or the outside vendors he’s gotten parts from. It really shows how nice of a guy he is and how much he loves cars.

@HVAC Quality Assurance - I wondered as well, but listened several times. Keep in mind; it's not just the block repair, but he put new rods and pistons in it and those pistons are 5 litres EACH! That's no off-the-shelf stuff there. So, along with labour, I think $60K is probably right! I'd be happy to be corrected by someone who worked on the repair. But, as you say, even if it were $16K, that's still much more than picking up a dinner check.

I recently saw a young Jay on an episode of Match Game from the late 70's/early 80's. that was the game show famously hosted by Gene Rayburn and occasionally guest hosted by BOWSER (Jon Bauman). Betty White was also a regular. at this point in History, Jay likely doesn't even recall his appearance on the show.

Jay is performing a huge public service in providing these segments for the education of people of all ages that would otherwise not have a clue about what drove the world forward. At the age of 75 and with a Stationary Engineer background, I actually spent a couple of years standing watch/maintaining/running over an engine similar to the large one that was used from time to time to transfer filtered and treated water to a cooling reservoir for a huge factory. One end of rod had the steam cabinet driving piston, the other end had a massive pump cylinder. That engine was eventually replaced with a diesel pump and that's when I got the heck out of that particular engine room for good! The noise was terrible whereas before the diesel, the cycling of the steam engine would almost be as comforting as your own heartbeat while in repose. Kudos Jay for your efforts to educate with real entertainment entwined.

You didn’t ruin the car you made it drivable so it can be enjoyed and appreciated. As you said, you kept the parts so if someone wants to make it underivable and unreliable again that can do so. What I admire about your collection is that you appreciate the cars and motorcycles and you drive them as the designer intended.

Watching Jay Leno talking cars puts me back to when my Dad and his Friends and our Family would be out talking cars. Which of the real cars (think 30's and 40's) were easy to understand and wrench able while these new ones while fast were a pain to turn a wrench on. All the while general laughter would permeate over side comments about individual skills and when the phrase " Is that right?!" was used someone just was made the goat. Thank you, Mr. Leno.

Jay is definitely a true believer in all things automotive. The sheer depth of his knowledge on everything from Packards to Cobras, and Stanleys to Citroens. And like any dotting father, he loves all his children the same. I find these episodes very calming in a way, his relaxed demeanour and measured presentation, I don’t know what it is, bugs it sort of lulls me into a very tranquil state. I’m probably not explaining myself very well, but I hope he continues doing what he does so well.

Jay modifies cars the right way: to make them more drivable without ruining the character of the car. I always love his restomods.

Plus his reversible, bolt in and bolt out mods allow him to save the original parts without risk or wear in storage while he enjoys the car at some risk and wear to the modern parts. Many mods can be bolted back out, but the owners sell or trash the original parts. He should fix that transmission though and have it ready to bolt back in when the time comes.

​@@Munkenba They used to make them out of tin back in the day. You see, it was a race engine, longevity was not a concern. We made them out of BRASS, so they will last forever. In addition to that, we run coolant thats not water-based, so we don't have to worry about corrosion AT ALL.

This is Brian Kim Keenan. This array of steam engines is exactly how it looked in my Chicago Public School (Raster elementary) basement. The 3 story brick school from around 1900, had a 5 story tall brick chimney stack. It was coal fired to provide heat to the school. The steam engine array was used to pump and control ventilation and operate coal loading and water distribution. Aa a young child bringing lunch to this area for the workers, it was amazing and frightening at the same time. I felt honorored to have experienced this place in the early 1960s. Thanks Jay.

Jay, I just about fell out of my chair when you said you had a Dodge Polara. The first car my dad ever bought was a 1966 Dodge Polara 500 convertible. Drove it off the sales lot and promptly ran out of gas. It had air conditioning and at the time I think it was one of the first convertibles you could get with A/C. It had a 383 in it and ran on leaded gas. Well it sat in the garage for awhile then he parked it in a friends field along with the horses. Never, ever saw another one until I was driving home one day (after having lunch with my dad) in a parking lot being sold. Drove straight over, jumped out and told the guy my dad had one just like it. He said "Here is the title for the car" turns out it WAS the old Dodge. They used to have a speaker in the middle of the back seat where my tiny butt used to sit. I miss that car to this day.🤗

Really liked the steam engines too - crazy to think that they still run and work so many years later. But you got me with the 426 Max Wedge car. Livin' the dream. I agree Tom. Would be great if Jay could connect it to a machine for work. Anything from a steam hammer to steam organ. Last one I saw at work was a traction engine powering a huge circular saw slicing lumber. "weeeaaaghhh" went the blade, "phuff phuff phuff" went the engine. Poetry in motion.

As I see it, with an old car you can do one of three things. The most common is to scrap it, because it reaches a point where repairs are more costly than the current value. Unfortunately, many people fail to recognize that value may increase over time. Second, you can drive it until it dies, then look at it like some ancient relic, because it can't be fixed. Third, you can restore it with parts that are available, augmented with newer, better ones. This allows the vehicle to be enjoyed and ensures that it becomes more than a museum curiosity. Americans love this mix of tradition and innovation, and people like Jay, who have the resources and desire to curate these treasures, have saved many interesting examples. I wonder if Jay ever considered opening an automotive museum to the public? He would have one of the best collections in the world, I would think.

@@Bob_Smith19 part of my grandfather’s job when he was head of maintenance at a paper mill was to make the call or go to a worker’s house to inform his family that the worker was either severely injured or dead. The fact that he was designated to do that tells you how often it happened. He personally watched a guy get folded in 4 by one of the machines. OSHA wasn’t a thing until late in his career and in OSHA’s early days, they could be paid off pretty easily.

@@phamnuwen9442 which is probably a part of the reason why the paper mill he worked at closed down 20 years ago. When companies care more about cheapness and efficiency over their workers, then the workers loose their jobs. My grandmother worked at ford electronics from 1970 to 1998 upon her retirement. She started out hand soldering circuit boards and nearly 300 people worked at the plant. By the time she retired, a machine was doing her job and her new job was to watch the machine for any issues and quality check the circuit boards on occasion. Basically she just read books all day. By that point the factory employed less then 50 people (most of then being Corprate or maintenance workers). Machines took over most of the jobs and created very little. Eventually ford shut the plant down and moved the operations to Mexico. Now it’s just an empty building in the middle of town.

I don't know, I just don't have any problem with upgrading these fine old machines to make them even better at what they are built to do. They are more fun and useful to actually be used than to just sit in some museum somewhere. It's one thing I love about these machines coming into Jay's possession is that he still drives and enjoys them and shares them with all of us.

RE: Maserati GTI. great car. And as so many cars, they are made to drive, not sit on a trailer or in a museum. And if you own this car as Jay does, you drive it. Or should be driving it. So, if it doesn't drive well on today's roads and conditions, the modifications are fine by me. Jay kept the original parts. So if it should ever wind up in a museum, it will be original. But as long as Jay owns the car, he WILL drive it. Luv the steam engines. My great grandfather worked on the railroad. The B&O. Fun to see where we've been. Thanks Jay
