Restoration Grandpa's Bayonet - Rusty WWII Knife
This time it is about the grandfather on the father's side. He is a veteran of the Second World War and is 99 years old. Although this is a German knife, we are not from Germany. Since during the war the grandfather was quite young, he was not sent to the first line as an infantryman but to the second line, to the artillery. His platoon had the task of establishing the artillery positions, digging trenches and ensuring the camouflage of the positions. When the war ended, he was left with this knife. He gave me the bayonet 15 or 16 years ago, when a local museum was established at school and the teachers asked us if we could contribute old objects. I thought it was too interesting so I didn't take it to school anymore :)), ever since then I was thinking of restoring it but it stayed like that until now.
The knife looks pretty bad, as far as my father remembers, my grandfather used the bayonet to cut vegetables for animals, especially pumpkin which has quite hard skin, probably that explains the hammer blows. The next year when my grandfather celebrates his 100th birthday, I will post a picture with him on the community. :)
I hope you enjoy watching this restoration :)

Take no notice of the begrudge. You did an amazing job with that bayonet. Excellent craftsmanship.

It was a historically significant piece, because it had what seems to be a pretty cool field modification. There are more conservative methods that could have been used to preserve its value, however, these werent used and sadly due to this, the bayonet has lost most, if not all, of its value to collectors.

Называй это как хочешь но это не реставрация!! Для поделок можно взять кусок рессоры. А не убивать исторический предмет!

Firstly I must say that you have great craftsmanship! I found it very cool that you made a new button completely, that was impressive. But I am not too sure if this can be a restoration I would say more of a modification or giving a destroyed item a new life. Of course the bayonet was in a really rough shape and was heavily modified in the first place, not much can be done about that. I must point out that the handle screws are not of the correct type, the bolts for them were also not the correct type. But you did a good job with what you had with a pretty much destroyed bayonet! Don't let those German boot lickers upset you claiming you destroyed it :D

I have to admit, that was the worst sharpening job before you fixed it. Someone took it to a grinding wheel. Great job!!!

This is not a restoration, but a mockery of the subject of history.
