lovely to see a thought for Dave Hills - stand by your man
@martinwilkie1785
@martinwilkie1785 3 жыл бұрын
FYi to followers : Dave Hills was a stalwart of the Vincent HRD community for many decades and took on the production of centre stands that were easy to fit and easy to use. He was a real engineer who always had time to ensure your stand met his expectations as well as yours. Spoke lots, only met once. Nice guy who is being waved goodbye to this Wednesday 19th May 2021. I feel both Phils would have approved this upgrade as do so many owners.

Many thanks Martin. Yes it was so sad to hear about Dave. He was a true gentleman and everyone that I know who has a tread down stand speaks so highly of him. He will be missed.

Was just going to ask about the D.Hill stand and how to get one. Sorry to hear this sad news. Does anyone know if these stands are available to buy or know anyone else who fabricates them?

Cheers Terry! Yes, the oil change is pretty involved, but it’s a lot of fun. Had a great ride today with Geoff on our Vincents. We did about 100 miles and I took a few clips :-) cheers, Mike

@@TheMightyGarage Mike. The sump on those engines is dry. the oil has to be fed down. Can I ask what your thoughts are on that versus a wet sump? As with cars of that era, there is a fair amount of oiling & greasing to do! (compared to modern machines) 👍

Congrats Mike, it is a great bike. You are doing well to preserve this beautyful machine for the prosterity. This also goes for you Norton. The prosterity will be able to see what real motorcycles were built like, how they sounded, how they smelled. Today my bike and I together enter our hundredth year. Huray, huray, huray.

@@TheMightyGarage hi, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought these engines were dry sump ? so the oil has to be fed from the tank...
@TheMightyGarage
@TheMightyGarage 8 ай бұрын
@@vincentl.9469 That is correct! The oil tank is under the fuel tank and it's also a stressed-member (i.e., is an integral part of the frame design). Cheers

Very nice, I think it is always a good idea to get plenty of oil circulating before you start after draining the oil, more wear must occur at that time than riding for many miles, it certainly started very well! Stay safe! Chris B.

Great series! Thanks for your hard work, both in the shop and in the video editing room. I'm unable to visit a bike with a girdraulic fork and am not seeing any measurements or maths on the internet. For a starting point to engineer my own fork, could someone tell me distances bolt-to-bolt of upper and lower links, as will as distance between upper and lower links at the brace/tree end, and at the fork end? I think I can fine-tune the geometry in AutoCAD, something that will better fit my bike's geometry, then work out spring rates mathematically.

surprised that with usual thoroughness Mike did not break bottom crankcase banjo oil feed to allow line to be purged of old oil, or was that in Prt 1?.
@TheMightyGarage
@TheMightyGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dog Paw, yes, it was in part 1 and part 2 briefly shows the banjo going back on again. I drained out all the engine oil from the main feed pipe that is attached to the underside of the crankcase by the banjo. The pipe sat unscrewed for several weeks and so I hope that most if not all the oil came out. What I didn’t do was blow the remaining oil out with with an air compressor, but hopefully I got most of it out 😉 Cheers, Mike

Gorgeous machine, Mike. Wonder if you might have a recommendation for a PNW shop to rebuild my Commando engine? I've spoken with CNW, but understand they may be stopping their rebuilds for a bit - and would love to find a great local specialist (I'm in the Seattle area). Thank you!

@TheMightyGarage

Thank you Stephen. The Commando definitely feels a lot lighter and more nimble with grunt and encourages you to be more of a hooligan 😉 Vincent feels heavier, more mechanical, older for sure, but it is an absolute delight to ride once it's underway. In one word, I would describe riding the Commando as "fun" and riding the Vincent as "special". ☺️
