After owning a 1951 Standard Vanguard back in the mid-60s, my first car, I have always had a soft spot for the vehicle. Over the past few years, since 2009, I have been looking for a replacement Vanguard, something to restore. There have been plenty around but mostly junk requiring years of work and a big wallet.
There were quite a few located in Western Australia, however they were geographically impossible. One was located down the Illawarra; however this one had been modified and fitted with mag wheels so was unacceptable.
I finally found a single web page with images and a story of a 1949 Black Vanguard.

What a beauty. Thank you for sharing your passion for the Standard Marque. Seeing your post brought back fond memories of my Ellesmere Port childhood. My uncle proudly owned a Standard Vanguard. It had plenty of room for us kids to sit in the back with me Mum & Nan. While Auntie sat in the front with Uncle. I remember going to Chester for the day. Ee it were grand day out!

Standard Vanguards have a big history in the Cars in Australia in the later forties, fifties into the early sixties. My Uncle Lete had a 'Humpback' Vanguard Spacemaster in Mt Gambier South Australia. He drove regularly to Melbourne VIC and around SA. Another unrelated Uncle, Bert B owned a very early humpback Vanguard Smaster in Canberra ACT (Aust Capital Territory) & as a little kid we drove overnight to Melbourne, over 450 miles over Australia's main highway, The Hume Highway Highway31. It was all mud & bogged trucks but as a kid it was such fun. Later, in 1962 when I was in Benalla Victoria Aussie, a huge sized friend Bill had a Standard Vanguard with a boot (trunk) and towed a Caravan. His annual holidays included a very long trip to camp & watch The Stawell Gift, a Pro Male Handicap (betting) Race (originally Goldfields). In 1970 when I married, my wife's Uncle had owned yet another Vanuard Spacemaster at Penola South Australia. He loved that car, and as a Clergyman, it took him from church to church or to other Parishes together with wife and two daughters. Vanguards were great because they suited families up to 4 being Large family sized with six across seating and British (Empire equaled no tariffs) therefore spared double the price of importing a similar sized American Car (which were only for the rich). Fun times.............. ps. Bruce. You've completed a fantastic restoration of your SV-1949, a much loved favourite make!

My first car was a 1949 Vanguard Phase 2, which was16 years old when I bought it for £25, and not a spot of rust. I loved that car and so did all my friends, so much so that even today they sometimes bring it up in conversation. Got 8 in it one night, 3 in the front, 5 in the back without too much discomfort. To this day I regret parting with it because I realise with a bit of money spent on it, it could have been a car for life. A respray and a few minor things would have done it. It would have been a lot cheaper than all the money I spent on cars since, including accommodating its 18 mpg thirst. Ah, well...........

my wife once owned one of these cars in america but that was before I met her...she had a VW beetle after that....yours does look great...if the UK motors had followed the VW lead and had to buy parts, etc, before they got any cars, they might h ave made it but alas, they did not...Fiat has returned with their new Fiat and now an Alfa Romeo so I hope they do well, we have had Mitsubishi suvs and have done well but the old plant has been sold to a secretive electric car co....I will see what happens there...I am pleased that your car is doing well for you...best wishes, Chuck

I know for a fact that these cars are brilliant for taking farmer's gates off without doing much damage to the car.

I took my front gates off with mine, and didn't even notice until I saw them lying on the ground. Reversed out in pitch black, and couldn't see them through that high back window. Some well meaning neighbour must have shut them for me because I always left them open.

There's a film about one of these cars travelling the length of New Zealand. Wish I could remember the title.
