Uncle Doug, your depth of knowledge always amazes me. I really don’t know of any other person on or off KZbin who can modify a 1946 jukebox to work with modern records, build hot rods, and repair/modify vintage amps. You are truly outstanding, sir. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. It is very much appreciated.

NOTE: Several viewers voiced concerns regarding the apparent absence of RIAA Equalization (a rather complex but interesting, topic.....look it up on YT if you're interested). It's been my experience that the significant increase in input impedance and use of a 1 meg VC pot results in good bass response......plus, don't forget the 18" speaker, which does some "equalization" on its own. In the rare case that less treble is desired, I have occasionally added a trim pot in the VC Box allowing varying amounts of high frequency to leak to ground through a low-value capacitor (value selected by trial and error). Regardless, the warm "jukebox tone" is quite evident.....and can be heard in one of my earlier videos featuring the W-1015: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqXFf2pjq92ImMk

I cut my teeth on valve hifi then turned to the way more complex circuits in guitar amps. You made that transition much much easier. And you're right, a lot of guitar amp techs miss out by not making their own valve hifi, the quality is sublime compared to transistors and Class-A or Class-AB to boot!

I did an image search for the original pickup for that beast, and it is truly mammoth! When I had a job at an electronics wholesaler in the early 70's, we had an old juke box renter who would buy cases of Astatic #51-3 cartridges and needles to boot for all his conversions. I don't think he had anything this old, though! Lovely fidelity from that setup! I recently worked on the opposite end of the spectrum - a Duo-sonic record player about 1955 vintage - a monster Astatic Crystal cartridge with about 1.5 V of output (yes, volt!) feeding directly to the grid of the 25L6. It's the most simple piece of audio gear I've ever worked on! Didn't sound nearly as sweet as your Wurlitzer! Looking forward to the next one, Doug!

Thanks for sharing this with us, 87. The original horseshoe-magnet cartridge for both pre and post-war Wurlitzer jukeboxes was indeed a formidable chunk of metal, completely filling the entire circular tone arm head and weighing several ounces.

So many, many years ago worked on a Wurlitzer jukebox that used a similar electrodynamic speaker. It used a separate 5U4 tube supply to power the speaker magnet. Had an amp similar to the one shown in this film. A friend of ominous and I rebuilt the amp and supply for the box. It played 78. The speaker system had a tweeter as well. Sounded great when finished. Also redid the motor in its auto TT. Can’t remember the models-was over 40 yrs ago!

How cool! We used to play a community center in Palatka, Florida back around 1964-65 ... One of the songs that you could still choose, was Buddy Holly's "Maybe Baby." That place was like the Happy Days TV show. When I grow up and get rich, I am going to have one of these Wurlitzers, a couple pin ball machines, and a Chris-Craft 1950's runabout like you would find at Kingsley Beach, Florida!

Thanks Doug, a very interesting video. Love your Jukebox it's a thing of beauty, that quick start relay would really sort the chaff from the hay on valves with weak heater filaments. Speaking of metal valves I have a 1946 RCA Bench amp that is all metal, it had a little 3" speaker for which I removed and put a milliamp meter in the hole it left and is now a guitar amp. It's a great amp and pushes my vintage Celestion quad box quite well. All the best mate!

Welcome back Uncle Doug! You should partner with a low run record producer to create your own 45 rpm test vinyl. You might be able to swing a cool contra deal just for the asking. Thanks so much for your very kind words, JF. Back in the 80's Rhino Records produced a bunch of popular 45 RPM hits on 78 RPM records, so they could be played in vintage jukeboxes. Those records are quite valuable now.

This is really cool. My dad spent a lot of time fixing up old jukeboxes in the 1970s - these were all in the shop of his dad, who used to run a business that included renting out and servicing jukeboxes all over the place. When my grandfather died, my dad fixed up and sold off the ones left over, and we kept a couple in our house. I just recently started building some of my own tube amps (with lots of help from your videos, Uncle Doug!) but unfortunately my dad is no longer around - otherwise, it would be fun to talk about this stuff with him. And I'm sure he'd like this video.

Hey Unkie, Long time no see..... Wasnt sure if it was you or if it was me? I kinda been outta the loop. Had lots of personal stuff goimg on sorting a couple of family estates and occupying a second home. I have mostly put my amp shop on back burner and havent been doing many guitar amp projects. It appears I have not missed many videos... I took a break from guitar stuff and had been away from the shop for awhile. I just started getting back at it. It was refreshing to note that you found something a little different to showcase for your latest video. I do so much love the vintage electromechsnical widgets of this era! Luckily some of it has become desiriable, sought after and it still survives today! Your own personal Wurlitzer all lit up like a Broadway premier marquee is certainly a thing of beauty!!! Mid Century items are becomming the next big thing. We have s really nice nieghbor that bought and restored the home nextdoor in complete 1950-1960 decade decour, right down to all the kitchen appliances. I have been slowly going thru a beautiful 1959 Telefunken Console Hi-Fi that someone obtained for me quite a number of years ago. My buddy knew I was always on the lookout for tubes. He owed me a favor and was going to gut it right there where he had found it. Luckily I was at the rigbt place at the right time and able to collect the complete unit and cart it away in a box truck, instead of him gutting it at his job site. Surely was a major come up for just the outstanding all original vintage Telefunken tubes that I obtained. Of course it now contains full compliment of modern guitar amp tube pulls such as Sovtek and JJ's ECT..Meanwhile I covet the half a dozen Telefunken preamp tubes and dual pairs of EL84's for the stereo final amplification. These tubes now reside in my caddy of special tubes! A tube caddy likely worth it's weight in gold . Anyways these Telefunken consoles have a ton of stuff going on inside them, especially multiband radio reciever that debut the first year of stereo broadcasting. It has pto tuning with MW/SW/VHF Magic tuning eye tuning of the stereo signal. Its a very ambitious project with its expander circuitry and all its mechanical selection of different filters! Turntable is functional with three different stylus and two cartridges. One cartridge flips back n forth between the stereo stylus and mono stylus. a small reel to reel and dynamic mic is also integrated into the console. We intend to add streaming bluetooth. It is our hope to have it fully 100% resto, looking pretty and worthy to gift our awesome neighbor before the end of the year. I mentioned it's ambitious project? Final thoughts on your Wurlitzer video and observations,,, As far as the similarities with guitar amp topologies, maybe at first glance many folks might not immediately recognize the similarity. Most folks are most familiar with post tweed amps. If you go back at the earliest tweed amp examples it starts to become more evident. If you are familiar with the Woody amps it becomes very evident! I am going to venture a big guess as to why that might be so similar... I would bet that both designs go back to the original RCA Radio Recieving Tube Application book. The circuits are the application notes originated by RCA when they marketed their tubes. That is the basis for the biggest evolution of tube guitar amps ever. Ok one last thing... I promise, last thing...... Question? Your buddies Valco? Who did the cabinetry? Where can I source similar covering materials? I have inheireted several Silvertone amp heads chassis but the cabs are of course all roached !

The covering on the Valco clone is a tweed like material bought from Joann Fabric Shop. It’s been shellacked.

@@williambock1821 Thanks for that... Great Idea! Ya know I had sourced material from Hobby lobby a couple of times. Dont know why I didn't think to source something like that for other projects like these Silvertone too. I found a near exact match for really old Boogie grill material and also used it on an old marshall combo. Ditto for the inside plush velour of a custom guitar case. I imagine there is a whole wide assortment of linen materials that could be shellac'd or nitro'd. That could work out really well if ya manage to get the pattern matched up on your overlapping cuts and such. Thanks for the hint!

Thank you for this great video Uncle Doug. You have been sorely missed. You are about the only channel that i have the notification bell on an its been tearing me up waiting to finally watch it! Life gets busy sometimes. Among other things i have been caring for a wonderful tiny feral yellow kitty who adopted us thes year an she finally got spayed an had a pretty hard time with it, but she an her big brother are living the good life now as dedicated indoor kittys only. That amp sounds great an your kittys are killing it with the tunes!

A lot of guitarists, a nd later bass players in the late '40s and into the '50s used those juke box amps and speakers for guitar amplifiers. They were very clean and as loud as you wanted them to be. Thanks for the lesson on how to renovate one of them.
