This video is long was going to make 2 parts but just left it alone, there is a lot of information so skip to parts you want to look at, I used vinegar to clean with, made my own handles {repurposed ones}, used pick & small wire brush to help clean.

I have been restoring old files for about a month now and have now found that dollar tree vinegar for cleaning added to white vinegar really restore them to back to Grey like new also sharp as well so give this a try also I let them sit for 4 days and the foam turns brown the they are ready.

They have file cleaning wire brushes made just for files and also Nicholson has wood handle or plastic handles with different inserts. The wood handles are cheaper in cost, I like the wood handles better in my opinion. There are different size handles, Nicholson has a handle chart to help simplify selecting the correct handle. My local Ace Hardware store.carry's these handles, and my guess big box stores my carry them. I would get them off of Amazon.

Yes sir, I have a brush for files it is call a card file brush, I made handle out of old screwdriver handles, it cost me almost nothing but my time, and some screwdrivers where free because they were damaged, plus I have some unique file handles!!!

Cleaning them up does not make them good does it-if they are wore out.

Correct but you cannot tell if they are any good until you clean them, and yes, I did have one that was not useable, but I could not tell at the time and no none were worn to a state of worn out, most were not use at all just dirty and rusty.

OK. After getting expert opinions regarding storage of files. Everyone I spoke with says the proper way to store your files is to hang them vertically and not touching each other. With the number of files you have, it's going to require a lot of racks. Nevertheless, I'm not a fan of wrapping them in burlap I would not have to unwrap each time to find one file. was told by several experts in the metal working world, if you clean your file after each use they will not be exposed to rusting. Loving watching your videos, please keep them coming.

Yes I agree, I do have over 20 of them stored up right and hanging, the ones I rapped and stored are long term storage, I probably will not be into them for maybe 2 or 3 years, only if I need one to replace one, I have damaged or wore out, and I agree that they need to be cleaned after use but the ones I have stored is because in Oklahoma I was worried about humidity and storing them for long term, plus it will not hurt them! and thanks for watching and really do appreciate you for your comment and your thoughts!!!!!

You can sort them by type and stack them with a piece of paper folded in-between them as you stack them. You can use wax as you use them on aluminum. plastic cut we used on Formica tops and cabinet work to take sharp edge off and over hang of laminate

I found that I use burlap material with a little oil on them and then storing them in a metal tool box with no other tools, I made a video on how I did this, yea and I use them on my laminate top now! I also have about 20 files of different types stored hanging on the end of my table!

Files can be sent off and reconditioned. If they determine they are at end of life they will paint the handle red. Evaporust, electrolysis and ultrasonic cleaners all work well cleaning files.

How do u know what the file is used for? For metal or wood? I’m just learning. Can u use them to sharpen tools or hedge trimmers?
@djstoolrestorations

I am still learning to; I will make a video on how I sharpen my tools next weekend, and then I will use different files and the outcomes of each, there are others out there that are a lot better at it than me, but I will try my best!
