I found this rusty valve lapper on ebay and I thought it looked really cool. It certainly seemed like a perfect opportunity for a restoration video. I was worried about not being able to fix the knobs since the wood was splitting, but I decided to go out and buy a wood lathe and make some new ones myself. This was my first time using a wood lathe, so don't be too hard on me.
I was very surprised at how well paint job on this restoration came out considering the piece was so rusty, the original casting had such deep grooves, and I didn't even use the proper type of body filler.
Even though it is a beautiful tool, I don't see the purpose of it since the tried and true valve grinding stick with suction cups on either end is cheaper and easier to use in every conceivable way. Your best option is probably to use a a valve grinding drill attachment.

My Dad who was an old time car mechanic always taught me to give the lapper tool a half or a quarter turn by lifting off the valve seat to gain an even valve seat lap. Your video sure takes me back to the days in the garage with my Dad. Thanks.

Wow, haven't seen one of those in a really long time! My uncle used one all the time. They do work, but the trick it use valve grinding compound between the head and the valve and be very patient. 1 valve can take 15-20 minutes to get just right, and only use the weight of the grinder without any pressure.

You did a beautiful job of restoration and it turned out great. Your wood lathe skills are very good for a beginner on a wood lathe. I only wished you had explained to us exactly what this tool was designed for. Many of us had no idea what it was. I got the impression after reading one viewers remarks that it was designed to grind valves on cars. If he hadn’t made that comment, I would have been totally clueless. As a restorer, always remember that not all of your viewers are skilled mechanics, tool and die makers, woodworkers, etc. Please humor us and better explain what you are restoring, what it’s used for, and how old it is. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you work and will continue to watch your videos. Great job!!!!

Tip, when you put the bearings in. I'd have put little grease inside the bearing valley and put them in before assembly. The grease would have held em in place.

I'm 74 now, but when I was in my mid-20s I bought one of these from Sears & Co. It would turn forward, say 2/3 of a turn and then backwards 1/3 of a turn, then forward again. I couldn't get this to run slow enough to tell. It worked great you just had to put a lot of time into it. You started with coarse compound, cleaned that off then medium and clean that off then fine compound and clean that off. It did a great job of lapping them to each other. I found a modern listing for them: www.sears.com/rotary-9051-cup-valve-grinder-for-9050/p-A014138136?plpSellerId=1800toolrepair1&prdNo=11&blockNo=11&blockType=G11

Excellent restoration, very well done Sir! It's a beautiful hand tool, but I'm not sure that it necessarily saved time or was anymore accurate at lapping/grinding valves in than the demonstrated stick and rubber sucker method that I was used too! But really nice to see it restored back to its former glory. Greetings from Southport UK.

Neat little tool! Works best on clean valves, either new or wire-wheeled. And to get the cup to stick it takes a drop of oil or lapping compound in the cup. Try to keep it in line with the valve and don't force it. Works way faster than a spindle lapper.

You should always point the jaw towards the direction you're turning channel locks or adjustable wrenches. This ensures a tight grip and your wrench won't slip. Turning the direction you turn them what cause you to round off bolt heads and gouge material you attempting to turn due to the Jaws loosening as you apply pressure causing them to slip. I thought this was common knowledge. I guess you're not that common
