i worked in factory assemble cell phone 5 years. there are some point assembling waterproof tape 1. Do not touch anything with the tape surface. 2. The tape attachment surface must be free of scratches and any other substances. 3. The tape width is very thin, so it must be applied accurately. So factories use jigs. 4. After attaching the tape, you must press it with hot heat and constant pressure for about 5 to 10 seconds. Attaching it without heat as shown in the video above has no effect. 5. Nonetheless, you should always be careful with water after applying the tape. Because it was assembled by hand rather than a jig, it is difficult to predict how defects may occur. Therefore, if you apply tape but the waterproof performance does not work, the following causes may be found. 1. Presence of debris or dust between the tape and the part surface 2. There are scratches on the surface where the tape is applied. 3. Tape does not stick evenly 4. The tape is not subjected to the approved heat and pressure spec. 5. Use of unauthorized tapes! The use of unapproved auxiliary materials can be fatal in causing waterproofing failure. In this video, the heater was used and then rubbed by hand, but during actual assembly at the factory, a hot jig is used to press the entire surface where the tape is attached. Pressing after the heat has cooled is ineffective, and pressing while pushing gently with your fingers is also incorrect. The most important thing in waterproofing performance is proper heat compression!

I became interested in the waterproof seal after I was interested in buying a refurbished phone off Amazon. If you look in the details, it says they change out the battery but the waterproofing/resistance isn't covered by their new warranty any longer. I decided this was a dealbreaker and instead purchased a refurbished/refreshed phone from Samsung instead where there was still the full 2? year warranty, which covered the seal, I think. This made me think that water "proofing" the phone again would be a really tall order, but it looks only a little more difficult than replacing the screen. I also searched the website provided and they only sold seals for older iPhones and some Chinese phones like Huawei. So if watersealing is doable by people other than the OEM, why isn't it done more? I mean, if you're going to take away our headphone jacks and the ability to change out our batteries, the only acceptable exchange imo is the watersealing!
@RestoreTechnique
@RestoreTechnique Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your story. Last I knew, no phone manufacturers provide a warranty for water ingress, even though their phones are advertised with an IP rating and a depth/time specification. This is because they can't trust that the user handled the phone appropriately, and had all the ports closed, and didn't surpass the rated ingress protection. If they covered water damage under warranty, then anyone who didn't have the sim tray inserted properly, or took the phone into salt water, or left the phone in the pool for an hour, or took it deeper than 1-2m, would claim on warranty. So it makes sense that no refurbished phone is providing a water resistance guarantee. But I know that some repair technicians do not care enough to make a phone water resistant again. It's just laziness. Fyi, REWA offer the OEM seals for all the iPhones, including the 14 range. m.rewa.tech/

This is an excellent video. Im confused why sites like back market do not allow 3rd party refurbishers to even suggest if an items waterproof seal has been at least *attempted* to be reapplied... Or at least allow you to reach out to them to see if they claim to apply it, with whatever caveating theyd like... It seems like these waterproof seals should be made accessible to 3rd party refurbishers so they can apply it and skip the premium that apple will charge for a refurb (so they can prod it with a mechanical arm... lol?)

The edge and back of the sticker can look red before getting any water on it, as the white sticker has a red dye layer either at the back or in the middle.
