Restoring a 30+ Year Old Disc Harrow to use on Our Farm

Today we'll be repairing and restoring an old disc from my fathers farm that sat out in the weather for over 30 years! This disc had small trees and bushes growing up through it when I picked it up and was not in good shape. This implement has proved very useful on our land thus far and will be a vital piece of equipment for the development moving forward. Enjoy as I disassemble, clean, reassemble, and paint this old beast!

Love watching you take the time to restore rather than just buying new. It is a lost art in most areas, except the small farmers. Nice job and nice camera work and narration. You are an artist.

Thank you Marc! When you don't have a lot of money to invest, you find other ways to make it happen! Fortunately my father has many pieces of equipment just ruining out in the weather that he no longer has use for. I quite enjoy taking an old piece of equipment and making it like new again. It is a lost art and most are not willing to invest the time to restore old equipment. I may look at a local farming junkyard at some point and see what I can find lying around out there that can be salvaged!

I can't believe how much better that disc harrow looks with a fresh coat of paint. The new bearings will make a huge difference. It looks like it's doing a great job! It always amazes me when you look around and I can see all the work you've completed on the farm over the past year. Another great Grand Outdoors video!

I especially enjoyed seeing the grinder in use to remove the rust. Many other restoration videos I’ve watched make it easier by using a lot of rust remover, but I always wonder what those people do with all those chemicals once they’re done with them. Great job turning something rusty and ugly into something functional and pleasant to look at!
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
It is much harder to do it this way but it saves having to use chemicals that you breath in during the process and then figuring out how to dispose of it all. Not to mention that those chemicals will settle into your soil and cause damage to the environment. I did use vinegar to help with rust but it is 100% biodegradable. Thanks Spurious. This piece was especially important to developing the land so it was imperative that I get it in tip top shape! We'll be using this implement for every piece of land we clear multiple times.
@GrandOutdoors

@Chase Williams It is supposed to remove the outer layers of rust. I didn't have such great luck with it and really could have skipped that step in the process. Grinding it all off is the way to go.

Sell that pretty disc and get a pull behind disc , it'll do a better job in the field and it's a hundred times easier to hook up. I do have both, I took off front gangs and put spring rippers on front of 3pt disc.does a good job on hard packed soil. Good luck.

I went through a whole can of PB Blaster and a partial can of WD-40. This short video doesn't tell the tale of the many hours I invested into this one! The threads on most of the bolts were rusted off completely. It was just easier to cut them off with the torch!

Thank Mr Leslie! I had several gallons of that paint left over from other projects so I didn't have to buy more just for the disc. Looks like I'll have enough paint to restore many more implements in the future! Little bit goes a long ways!

Thanks Dusty! I've never had a problem with this sprayer clogging. I think I only paid $20-$30 for it on Amazon. I make sure and clean it well after every use and of course when changing colors. I use mineral spirits for that.

Thanks Moped. Both of those channels mentioned have a very high budget with the large amounts of subscribers. Looks like those guys are both professionals at what they do also. I'm just a beginning farmer sharing my early experiences with this 100 acres and its development. For now this head mount camera is about all I can afford to share my experiences. Maybe some day the channel will grow and I'll look into buying a better quality camera and microphone system.
