to get concrete into such basements, you order a pump truck, the concrete is pumped through hoses, 100 feet no problem. Regards, concrete contractor in Norway
@arniorgumundsson378210 ай бұрын
from what ive seen concrete pumps can be super expensive, was watching on some renovating channel here on the tubes and there they charge first for just coming to the place then for the time they are there and the amount pumped through so can easily cost 1000´s of dollars real quick at that point id rather use wheelbarrows considering its a flat area and were not talking crazy m3. dont get me wrong pumps are awesome if your pumping alot of volume or up some floors but a basic basement pour, be better just to get some wheelbarrows or make some slides with materials that you have around and save your self some cash, but America is a big place and maybe its cheaper there.

As a contractor who does concrete and foundations in southern MN, new and old id do a few things. When you tear the concrete out. Dig down a few inches, pack your base material. Then place 3/4inch washed stone (AKA Radon rock) then put your vapor barrier, at least 6mm poly sheeting down. On top of the poly put down 2 inch foam board and if wanted put your in floor heat tubes onto the foam if your doing that in the basement. When you pour it you can do it with wheelbarrows from a window, just place plywood down to not crush the foam. Or if in the budget use a pump truck and do the entire floor with a couple of people. But of coarse before any of that do your plumbing and water lines. Also for drainage an interior drain tile placed along the bottom of the footings. Place the tiles level and wrap them up with tile fabric, make sure to place clean rock around the tile to allow water to flow better. Do a larger sump basin and not a small one you get at any big box store (French Drain Man has some good systems). And drill holes in every block or every 6 inches all the way threw the wall. Place a dimple board on the wall and goes down and on top of the drain tile. Allows water building up on the outside to run threw the holes, down the dimple board and into the rock/tile. Just make sure to seal the top of the board to not allow radon to enter. Also put a couple of cleanout holes in the tile to open and clean if needed. If you really want to slope all the outside dirt away from the house, add rock beds with 1inch foam board underneath sloped away from the house. With a drain tile at the end of the rock. This will catch most of the water before it leaches down to enter the drain holes into the interior system. For the water drains id recommend one near the bottom of the stairs, one near the sump pump (with slope coming from the sump) in case of overflow, and one in the mechanical room for furnace and dehumidifier. Sorry for the long response but getting it right as its not easy to fix screw up with foundations.

The advice you are giving him for the inside of his basement sounds like layers (steps) in a basement foundation that should be done on a new build, not on a rebuild. How is he going to pack base material, lay down a layer of Radon rock, put a layer of vapor barrier and a sheeting layer in basement that already exists? ARE YOU SUGGESTING TO DIG UP ALL OF HIS BASEMENT FLOORS AND THEN MAKE ALL OF THESE LAYERS? He might as well have knocked down the whole house first then rebuilt the whole basement from the foundation and built these layers you are suggesting, then rebuilt the house up from there!
@brabblemaster40110 ай бұрын
@julien2912 basically sounds like what he is doing. Gotta take up half the floor to do plumbing. I do it multiple times a year on jobs. Either full tear outs or partial tear outs. In many areas its required to put radon rock in before you repour the floor. So yes it's a lot of work but it's not impossible

Talk to your concrete company about a pump truck and crew to do the floors in the basement. They'll pump the concrete through hoses and work from the farthest corner back to your window or even down the stairs. While you have the basement floor removed you may also want to consider adding in-floor radiant heat as well. That way you can minimize the 'cold' zones in the house. And if your radon test comes back good, it gives you the option of adding finished spaces.

Run a 4-in pipe from the top of the ceiling down to the floor of the basement. Then put in an inline reversible fan. You can blow the cold air from the basement to the attic during the summertime and blow the warm air from the attic to the basement in the winter.
@warrenmichael91810 ай бұрын
I would imagine his duct work will move all the air around like you just suggested but not in a little 4 inch pipe , but in big duct work.
@kevenhiemie10 ай бұрын
Okay @@warrenmichael918 a 5" or 6" pipe, the biggest he can fit behind a wall. You are correct about the duct work but your cold air returns are only pulling a small amount of air from each room, as they were designed to do. I don't know about your house but the only cold air returns at my house in the basement are up high and I added them. Let's say Cole's house is 6,000 Sqft with 10 ft tall ceilings that's 60,000 cubic ft. If he had a 1,600 CFM blower on the HVAC it would take roughly 40 minutes for all the air to recirculate. All that air is also be taken from everywhere in the house not from the warmest and coldest spots. A 6" inline fan will move about 400 CFM of air. Remember hot air rises and cold air falls. So in the summertime you would be pumping 24,000 cubic ft of cold basement air a hr into the warmest and highest point in the house. Then that cool air falls through the house. For argument stakes let's say the attic is the same cubic footage as the basement. A 6" 400 CFM inline fan would exchange the coolest air in the house with the warmest air in the house every 40 minutes. Two fans at the opposite end of the house 20 mins. It's the same theory as putting a box fan at the bottom of your basement in the summer and putting a box fan at the top of your stairs blowing down from the second floor in the winter time. We tested this once when we removed an Old furnace flue pipe. It works. We do now when we have the available wall space.

Concrete pump will be the best solution to pouring the basement. The time savings alone should pay for it's self. Little or no standby time for the mixer. A few workers moving the hoses from room to room vs the labor with wheelbarrows is the key. Pre-set up the pump. Mixer sets up once empties the load cleans out and leaves. the pump cleans out, picks up the hoses and leaves right behind it. Another advantage is it's is a constant and a homogenous pour. Little or no risk of cold joints and excessive cracking.

I wouldn't do the exterior drain tile if I were you. If you're already tearing up the basement floor slab, just install perimeter drain tile on the interior of your footings, have the drain tile dump into a sump pit with a sump pump that pipes water out to the surface of your lawn. Saves a lot of time and money while not destroying your yard that you spent so much time to get it looking so nice.
@jerrylabat55010 ай бұрын
That is also how radon mitigation is done. Basically it hooks into that drain tile and pulls the gas out from under the slab via that tile. The sump well is sealed air tight so that the only source of air/gas is the soil under the slab.

Will not stop water from coming into through the walls. Drain tile belongs on the outside of foundation. They have a backhoe and skid steer🤷🏻♂️ So it’s simple to do it the correct way and waterproofing the foundation walls on the outside as well.
@gangedillyo10 ай бұрын
@@kevink4914 That is correct, but his concern is hydrostatic pressure on the basement slab. This would be alleviated from draintile on the interior side. Any interior drainage is better than nothing, which is what that house has had since it was placed on that foundation.

condensation boilers are a lot of maitenance IBC is a good setup. vertical tube has better design. but they all take intense yearly maitenance... I own one and fix them as a maitenance contractor for a health region.. good luck
@cannon326710 ай бұрын
if your basement doesn't presently have water problems, and it doesn't look like it does, there's probably no need to go crazy with a lot of drainage tile. you are fixing a problem that doesn't exist. floor drains to a good sump pump( the abandon well filled in most of the way would be ideal) pit and the radon system should be plenty.

Hey Cole! I'm thinking what would be a good idea for the kitchen is to extend the porch to the kitchen. This way you could install sliding folding doors, this way you could use the BBQ on the porch. Kinda of indoor-outdoor vibe.

The craziest plan i ever heard!! Breaking an good concrete floor. Make a hole on the lowest part for a submerged pump. And treat your walls and floor from the inside. Good solutions eneuf on the market, with very good results and much less expensively.
@scoobysnacks10 ай бұрын
I agree, but he's apparently got the money to do it. This has to be outrageously expensive. He shouldn't call this "restoring" though, because that means to bring it back to its original condition. This is "modernizing", not restoring. It's going to be extremely nice when he's done and will be a great house to raise the next generations of Cornstars in, so they can help run the farm.

Cole, love the videos. I am a contractor in NW Illinois. I have built several new houses and shops. Love radiant heat in concrete. As for a house i could never justify the cost of radiant heat. If you install central air conditioning you already need all the ductwork plus an air handler and all the other AC components. At that point a forced air furnace cost is nil. Possibly just install radiant in the basement slab? Otherwise it is just a redundant heat system. If you love radiant heat that is your choice. To each their own. Keep up the good work!

As for the concrete pour... there's a type of concrete that auto-levels and just get a concrete pumper truck so ya can pump into the various parts of the basement. Mike Holmes uses it on his TV show "Holmes on Homes"

Cole once you get your concrete work done I suggest you put a DRICORE Subfloor System over the concrete and then lay your flooring over that. "DRICORE is an insulated subfloor system" that has channels on one side and should any water/ moisture come up the water would follow the channels to the drains🌻Check it out.

Digging drain tile around the outside of the house isn't a bad idea. They make a drainage product that is a mesh material that you glue to the outside of the foundation. That runs the water down to a drainage pipe. In rainy areas with basements a lot of times they run drain tile under the basement floor. If I were you I'd run it into the old well pit. Fill the well pit with rounded Rock not crushed limestone. You could also run the drain tile into shallow sump pump box placed over the filled in pit. That way, just for the heck of it, you could see if you're ever getting water under or around your home.

It's not a good idea to run storm water into an old well, because it contaminates the groundwater.
@kevenhiemie10 ай бұрын
Correct @@ILGuy2012 you shouldn't run storm water into a well but this isn't storm water, its water that's been filtered by the soil. If it's okay to run field tile 3 ft deep into a stream it should be okay to run 8 ft deep groundwater into a 23' deep hole. Plus have you ever seen or heard of an underground detention system? In big cities we build big underground vaults with Sand basins. To catch, slowly drain and filter storm water into the ground. Also he has said the house hasn't leaked in over 100 years. Adding a drainage system would be only additional insurance and peace of mind. Very little, if any, water would ever run into that pit. If he doesn't run the drain tile into the pit He only has two other options. Option 1. Run the drain tile into his septic system. If not illegal, it's not a good idea. You know it's sewer gases or in 35 years when the septic system starts to go bad. Option 2. Put in a sump pump. That will probably never run.
