Beautifully restored. Original paint, original decals, original nickel plating, the definitive typewriter restoration video. The No 5 is one of the most beautiful Olivers ever made, it’s also the last model to be produced in Thomas Oliver’s lifetime. Would love to see you take on a No 3, there are many out there waiting to be brought back to life.

No caso aí, foi feito uma limpeza profunda. Porque quando a pintura se vai, não tem como restaurar sem pintar. Da mesma forma o cromado, a borracha. etc.

How many typewriters do you have to restore to reach this level of expertise? So many components! So many screws! So many ways to get it wrong! Lovely work. Also the typeface on this model is gorgeous.

For reference I've worked on maybe two dozen machines or so, and I still can't do anything close to this.

Now THIS is a restoration video. Not that other BS of everything from a viking axe to a Hot Wheels Hummer that somehow aged exactly the same way. Well done sir. Great work and result.

I am in awe of the skilled it takes to break down and reassemble something of this complexity. But then, when I think of the people who engineered this device originally, in an age before computer aided drawings, when everything had to be done with paper and pencil. I can just imagine the complexity of the patent drawings alone. I’m just amazed at what it took to conceive, design, build, and now restore something like this. My hat is off to you!

the greatest thing about Olivers is that they are actually pretty simple machine to disassemble an reassemble which make them an even more remarkable design when compared to others. They are a good entry level to typewriter restoration

That is definitely a unique typewriter indeed. I have never seen one like that before. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Super excellent work.

I just found my first Oliver typewriter. I’d love to restore it but after watching this amazing tutorial ( I know I’d lose by step three lol. Fun to watch ( I'm going to keep watching! ) again and again and again!

Nice! Part of the skill of restoration is to find items in the right condition to restore. You chose this one well, with good paintwork with a nice (not too far gone) patina. The end result is a beautiful item that still shows age, but with clean mechanical parts. Not over-restored!

Im trying to follow this to disassemble an Oliver 5 of my own. I'm surprised to see that the Oliver paint job can survive the degreaser. It certainly makes cleaning the thing up look easy when you can just blast all the parts with the same can.

The big slotted screw at 21:13 can be restored by peening the metal back into place. People often file off the burrs but it's better to gently cold work the material back into place. Then, use the correct size screw driver. That's a tall order these days. Slotted screws were not always standardized and some drivers were probably special service tools, specific to the manufacturer. I usually resort to Chapman and use minimum gronk. Thanks for posting the video.

I have an Oliver similar to the one in the video. My grandfather gave me when I was 10. It sat in a damp basement for over 40 years. Now I want to clean and restore it, but there is surface rust on all the keys. If I took it all apart like in the video, I'd never get it back together.

I’m impressed with the attention to detail in this video, but because closed captions have been blocked (honestly, who cares about the deaf viewers, right? /s), I have no idea if there was any commentary or if it was presented as a “wordless workshop” type video.

Hi, did you use WD-40 during the 8 minute mark? Does it mess up the paint in any way? Thanks! 😊
@TypewriterRestorations
@TypewriterRestorations 4 ай бұрын
I mainly used very diluted simple green for the body. Sometimes I use WD-40 at the end to give it a nice shine. It shouldn’t mess with the paint as long as you don’t scrub too hard.
@SethPetero
@SethPetero 4 ай бұрын
@TypewriterRestorations Got it. I also have an Oliver office case for the typewriter. Do you think the diluted green would work for that, too? Also, diluted with water, right?
