A few months ago I found a machinist hammer in the road close to my house. The handle was bad, but the head was a 48 oz Belknap Hardware. Belknap in Louisville closed 1986. I ordered a new machinist handle, replaced in the head. It was a nice find.

Never heard of them either but a quick look and it seems Evansville Tool Works goes back to the 1890s and made hammers, hatchets, axes and such.

I hate to get into semantics here, but in reality that's a Blacksmiths cross peen hammer. I've never understood how the name "machinist hammer " became associated with this type of hammer. When doing an internet search for "machinist hammer", this hammer among many other types come up in images. A machinist wouldn't have any use for the peen end of this hammer. The peen is used for spreading hot material on the anvil. Oh, and this type of hammer predates the machinist trade by hundreds of years.

Yes you are correct, but that's what I call it, even our pipe fitter in my shop calls it that, we use this to knock plates, doors and other parts off our boilers during disassembly, among other things! our pipe fitter said when he was in the union shop that's what they called it there too!
