Restoring an 80 year old Mud house in Lahaul

The two of us have been quite fascinated with the local architecture of Himachal for years, but sadly with the passing of time we are seeing fewer and fewer authentic Himachali homes, as they are being replaced by easy to build and maintain RCC structures.
We’ve both often fantasised about building our own Earthship one day - a completely self sustaining home made out of natural / reclaimed materials, living off the grid and a home that we wish to build with our own hands.
We found out about this “Mud House Renovation Workshop” that is being conducted by an NGO called LAHOL based in Keylong and thought that this would be a great starting point for us to learn about building with natural materials. We’ll be doing some hands on mud plastering work and learning about traditional building techniques from the local village women.

Mostly people in cities have politicized cow shelters and use of cow in domestic lives but in rural India its our second mother(Proud owner of two).Floors plastered by cowdung are the best to sit and sleep and does not need daily mopping and cleaning. Unfortunately people use slangs like Gaumutri drinker or Gobar chap to look themselves cool on social media... Greetings from the land of earthships. I designed my 1000 sq. ft. passive solar adobe house in northern New Mexico 33 years ago. Considered building an earhship at the time. Several years ago the NM governor cut off the gas for about 5 days to 30,000 people in my area when the weather went down to 25 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit, not Celsius). My gas boiler froze but the geraniums in my south window survived. My house now has no heat, but I dress warm in the winter and the geraniums and I do just fine. My sister was an artist with adobe, plastered walls with different colored clays mixed with mica, including bas relief work. I helped her a bit with the basic mix and base coat. Mud is heavy. I think her mud mix used quite a bit more straw, and we always used sand mixed with clay/dirt. No cow dung.

I feel you there about Earth ship and Mud Houses. I have been working on the same for sometime now. Have worked in two earthship builds and learned a lot. There are lot of ways to build it and amazingly enough, all of these require community to come together to build such. Perhaps the reminder of how life was based on coexistence before the selfishness and greed took over. Would love you visit this mud house and probably get my hands on to another restoration project.
