Really exciting! I have so many questions & comments, but will keep it to three. 1. So sorry about your grandmother. I hope the finished project makes you think back to her regularly. 2. With so many parts and pieces disassembled, how are you keeping track of everything? 3. Can you share a bit more of your background and how you have the experience / confidence to take on a project like this?
@jonasfreitag4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Nichols Appreciate your condolences Andrew! 2&3 are good questions I should pick up in future Episode. We used freezer bags to keep all bolts and small items for any part together and label them. We’ll see how far that gets us. As for the confidence, you may have seen our Smokerbuild project. That sure was a good precursor to this. My brother working at MB and having access to some very knowledgeable mechanics there does most of the rest.

Man you guys are amazing in all your effort and talent involved in such a major undertaking! Having owned an 1982 300D as well as a 1984 300D I really respect the quality of the older MBs. They are little tanks! Now that they are being sent to the States in military form from all over Europe, I would like to think of finding one in decent shape! I am very sorry for your loss of your Grandma guys. You and your Brother will be in my prayers. Look forward to catching the rest of your series. I have always wanted to visit Germany all my life my Brother as well. So beautiful there. We have German in our ancestry. My Brother is the local MB Guru on the newer models that have to be coded and such. He is the best I have ever seen on the tech end of it! Take care guys! We wish you the best!

Thats so kind so you! We really appreciate it. Let us know if we can be of any help finding a "Wolf", as the German army calls the mil-spec G's, and sending it over there for you. More and more from the UN Kosovo mission in the 90s, where it was the truck of choice, are popping up in Eastern European markets in the mid to upper 10k's in really good shape and usually very low miles.

Hallo Lasse & Jonas!

I might get an old G-wagon heaps cheaper in a few weeks, because my grandpa’s friend has one that they put a turbo on many years ago. It has probably been standing still outside for at least 20 years and I’m not an expert at restoring cars so I might not buy it. I haven’t seen it yet but I’m gonna look at it in a few weeks.

I just found one here in France for 3600€. Looks OK. But for lack of funds I would buy it. 1981. Engine less than 10,000km. Needs new master cylinder. Quite a few other things too I would imagine. If it's still for sale in January.......

And I thought the Mercedes W210 was a bad rust bower. But the G seems to surpass it!
@jonasfreitag3 жыл бұрын
I think a fair amount of the rust could definitely have been avoided with better design, but we can't forget that rust starts to form where dirt and humidity sit for longer periods of time. With regular deep cleaning and occasional greasing and touch up on the underbody coating these Mercs would last a lot longer then they do.
