Thank you so much. My daughter and her husband lost their home to the California wildfires last year and I've been working on restoring some of the photos they were able to rescue. Most of the images so far have been B/W but now I'm ready for color. This was very helpful!

Thank you so much, I've been trying all kinds of methods to restore the colour in my grandad's photograph and 6 minutes in I can already see the colour of his jacket which I've never been able to see before xxx

I’ve colorized old photos but now have my first faded photo project. This video was most helpful for me. You crack me up with erasing (vs adjustment layer) what you’re not fixing -I do the same thing. I always wonder where I got that habit from. I think it’s from starting with PS version 3!

Thanks for watching, Ann! I go back to the first release. We had to come up with a lot of different methods. I remember ONE LAYER and ONE UNDO.

Wonderful restoration and far better than the auto method.

Great video, I like that you keep the number of "tools" to a minimum, I shall go and have a play right now with images I fixed in the past to see how this technique compares.

Thanks you. I learned lots of techniques.

Great in depth tutorial. This reinforces the separation of sections to layers as compared to a global correction. I still use global for small snapshot when I only have five minuets. But your method is much better for important photos.

What is the reason that you aren't using adjustment layers with masks? Would they not do as well of a job as destructive adjustments?
@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I use adjustment layers quite frequently on more exacting jobs. I was simply providing a simplified view to show those interested the potential of larger color corrections that may look impossible. (without getting into adjustment layers as we know them). I've found this "manual" way of attempting color correction is very good "eye training". I started digital photo work with PS Vers1 thirty years ago before any layers were introduced and there was only one "undo". It causes you to take different paths to accomplish your goals. (-:

My biggest issue with photo restoration is that fading/sun damage is often localized to part of the photo and I have a very hard time getting those areas to balance with the unfaded areas. Any tips? I'm working on a portrait of a soldier from the 1970s, and there is a large faded area that extends from the backdrop and onto the subject's face. In the rest of the photo, the fading is fairly uniform. Any tips on how to fix fade that is in just one part of an image?

masking imho. different layers for different parts of the image, via masking and change them all separately. Balancing the layers so it doesn't look artificial would be the hard part.

Interesting techniques. I still think the face and shirt still had a tiny bit too much Red in them - especially his face, which looked like he was sunburnt to me. You didn't cover dust/speckle removal and sharpening, which is surprising.

I think that my white balance is more in line with this "closed" portrait. The frame covers only the upper part of the body with some greenery in the background. Even if it was taken during the golden hour (for example), the goal of (this) portrait is not to reflect the effects of specific light in the exterior. At least, in that case, the frame would have to be wider. And that would not be a portrait then. ;) It is possible that the blurring of face parts is a consequence of my PrintScreen shot from the KZbin service, and that the author has an original with an adequate sharpness. I achieved „face quality“ using AI software. There is, of course, a lot of extra work here, although I didn't insist on that because my version of this photo was created via the PrintScreen option and was enlarged to 2000 pixels. Sincerely, Nenad

Why no masking? This video's methodology feels waaaay older than a few years ago...
@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques8 ай бұрын
It is an old technique Surely we use masking too, much more. It’s not my intent to teach things that get outdated since there are many who specialize. I try to stick to posing and lighting, throwing in a few other related topics here and there. Thanks for watching!

That is in no way a faded photograph. It has a tint which is fairly easily removed.
