Restoring Man o' War

Man o’ War is finally ready for his 100th Birthday! The video explains how he was preserved for this monumental celebration.
Make plans to visit the Kentucky Horse Park this year to join in the celebration. The Man o’ War Festival and exhibit begin on his birthday, March 29th. Our heartfelt thanks to all those who generously donated to help with the preservation.

I had wanted to see that sculpture up close since I was very little. Somewhere around 7 yrs old. It was still at Faraway Farms, then. Fast forward a few decades. My husband asked me want I wanted to do for our 25th wedding anniversary. I asked to go to the Kentucky Horse Park. I didn't know, at the time, that everything had been moved there. I was surprised when we arrived at the parking lot and I could see Red's head. You'd have thought I'd gone to heaven! I stood in front of that statue, and War Relic and the Admiral's headstones, for an unknown amount of time, with tears streaming down my face! What a wonderful childhood dream given fulfillment! To this day, i cannot thank my husband enough!

The statue depicts an older Man O’ War at stud….looking out over his pasture or being held on a lead by Wil Harbut….who’s there, in spirit, standing next to him.

I've been to Kentucky Horse Park and saw this statue. It's truly beautiful, however, the color seems to be very dark in comparison to his photographs. Maybe because they are colorized. But I just sat on one of the benches thinking of what being in his presence or sitting on his back would actually be like. There was an elderly black gentleman present, an employee of the park, that was the last living person to sit on Man "O Wars back.

It was only one horse, Donnaconna. It was Red's Belmont. That feat wasn't equaled, in amazement, until Secretariat finished his Belmont! I wasn't born until 8 yrs after Red died. But I saw Secretariat's Belmont. That was a moment I'll never forget.

You're right. It looks like those resin casts and not the bronze it was supposed to. Another reason they say "The road to hell is paved with good intentions".
