RESTORING MY 13 FOOT BOSTON WHALER CLASSIC! PART 5 ( TOTAL BOAT FLOTATION FOAM, START OF NEW FLOOR )

If I may make a suggestion.. The reason you use closed cell foam, is because all the little foam cells are actually sealed (closed). That keeps them from absorbing water should you have water intrusion somewhere down the line. In the future, you can actually install your plywood floor first. Then, you can bore 2" holes spaced in a grid pattern (about 2ft apart). Next, pour the foam into the holes and let it expand until it oozes up out of the holes. After that, you just have to trim off whatever squeezes out. Doing it that way, you ensure the foam completely fills the void between the floor board and the hull. If you use a holesaw to bore the holes, save the plugs. You can epoxy them back into the hole after your done with your foam. Since you're going to lay down glass on top of the wood, the hole seams will be invisible. By pouring layer upon layer, you left lots of little nooks and crannies for water to accumulate in. The bad thing about water intrusion... water can wick it's way into a void thru things like unsealed screw holes, cracks.. etc. It finds its way under the floor, but will never be able to evaporate out from the same way it got in (unless it's a big hole). When it comes time to attach accessories with screws, be sure to fill the screw holes with something like 3M 4200 (removeable) or 5200 (permanent) sealant before screwing the screw in. Yea of course! I actually thought about doing that but was little unsure with how the pressure from the foam expanding would affect the hull of the boat and the floor but in the future that might be something I try on another boat. I also did pick up some 5200 from west marine and will be doing that in the future videos to make sure of that because I don't want to ever have water problems with this boat again lol. I did somewhat similar but didn't use the wood I was going to use for the floor.i wanted the wood to be completely solid.i used a separate piece of plywood for that process and had my son sit on it to hold it down while foam expanded (he was grounded and had nothing better to do lol) . I then put in the fresh ply without holes👍. Extra work probably but just didn't like the idea of drilling holes in somthing I want solid and waterproof even though I'm glassing over top 😁

What LB density foam did you pour into the 17 twin vee? I have a 14 TV that i think will need new foam.

You should have put the floor in first , glassed it in then drilled a few 2-3 inch holes in the floor and pour the foam that way. Much easier and you don’t have to shave the foam down

I wish I would have done that too. I had thought about that but I was scared with the pressure of the foam on the hull when rising and was scared of damage

@@oneofakindoutdoors should just glad the ply wood both sides , then glass it too the skin of the hull , put some cylinder blocks or weights on top to hold the floor down then pour the foam. This way the foam doesn’t have air voids and will stick to the bottom of the floor and give it a nice tight bond. Floor work sucks but if u take the time it will come out good. I wouldn’t have used the plywood though. I would have gotten some high density foam from fiberglass coatings that’s the same thickness as the wood. No rot and easier to work with

How many gallons did you use? 2 or 6lb?

I probably used about 4 gallons and I used the 2lb density foam. I would recommend checking your local boat supply stores they have good deals on it, (not west marine though). and amazon has some good ones, just make sure its the marine one whatever you buy

Looking back I would have done that too, I was just worried that the foam would not get to all of the areas but putting the floor in first would've made the whole process a lot easier. Thanks for watching!

Yea they are a great boat I would say look at the transom that is the most important part to make sure is good because its a huge pain to try and replace especially as a beginner. Check the under side of the hull and make sure you check for fiberglass that might be delaminating. Really everything else is a easy fix, good luck finding a project!

No I would not recommend it, the marine flotation foam is what you want to use because it helps you float and is coast guard certified and the foam also provides support to the floor as well especially in the whaler. Thanks for watching!

You did the foam wrong you are supposed to put the floor down first then pour the foam
