That's a nice family relic you inherited,Mark. Something that can be handed down to more generations. Hope you can figure the problems out. Looking forward to the outcome!

amazing how little bike tech and aesthetics changed for about 50 years! I have a couple 1975 bikes and aside from the derailleur tech, they could almost be contemporary with this beauty
@MonkeyShredКүн бұрын
Oh I’m sure there’s lot of progression we were to dig deep. 50 years would jump to the 80s where cassettes, square taper etc etc were all coming in.

Great that you managed to save threads that was crossed, it is more wear on the material after rethreading, which is why I would consider using threadlocker for more stability during final assembly. Greetings from Croatia
@MonkeyShred2 күн бұрын
That could be a good idea. Although I’d just be worried about the cups seizing in the frame with no grease on the threads.
@BranislavB-hx9zy2 күн бұрын
@@MonkeyShred It seals the threads by filling in the void that would be there if the cups was installed dry in the frame. So it will prevent seizing because it seals the gap where water/corrosion could take place.

What a great video with a lovely back story . That headset was a thing of beauty until you took it apart , but should be an easy fix with a headset cup shim. Your grandad looked like a serious club cyclist back in the day and club runs on a weekend would be like some crazy millage. My dad (86) tells stories about riding crazy miles then having a cafe stop and getting home at dark. Hope the rest of the restoration goes great.
@MonkeyShredКүн бұрын
Yeah I’m hoping a small shim should work. I don’t remember that being loose at all but there were are.

I’d flush out that bb shell completely. Get all that shit out of there, it’ll help out when installing the bb back in eventually. Perhaps use copper grease if you have some.

Wow ,that is a gear change mech I havent seen before . I was given an old frame last year with fancy lugs ,a bottom bracket oiling point and cyclo benelux fork ends .Sadly no head badge .I have been told it's probably from late 1950s .I have built it up with Raleigh components from early 1980s and it rides better than any frame I have owned before .PS that's a lovely piece of history you have there .

Love it how about a good polish on brakes and fenders as we say in the states. 😎

They did have a good polishing when I first assembled it all. I will be going over it all again though.

Good job on those threads. A 1x with indexed gearing! But those three gears look very close to each other :) In some shots the spoke elbows on the back wheel looked like they weren't quite touching the flange. I would check that. If they aren't they might break after a while. As for the fork just pull one leg out to the side a bit (thus increasing the spacing) and push the other one to get it back to where it should be. Should not be hard to do. Don't pull too hard because it will be easier to overdo than you think. Sneak up on it a bit. Once the wheel is nice and centred both ways round put your dropout alignment tool back in and get that nice and square.
@MonkeyShred2 күн бұрын
Right?! 1930s indexed gearing. Pretty cool!

Also find the mud flap for front And old leather bag you can cut into a flap😎
@MonkeyShred2 күн бұрын
You know what - I’ve never noticed that on that picture before! I do have a couple of leather flaps tucked away somewhere.

Nice video. Makes me glad I've not had my Dad's late1930s bike re-finished. Good to see you've come to the same conclusion. I must admit I rarely ride my Dad's bike as I don't like the steering/handling. I think the large front fork curve, like on your Grandad's bike, reduces the castor effect too much. The steering is very twitchy. Do you not find that too?
@MonkeyShredКүн бұрын
I haven’t ridden it too much to be honest because of the twisted fork. Really looking forward to riding it again though so long as the 3 speed cassette and chain lasts.
@duringthemeanwhilst2 күн бұрын
fantastic story. well worth going for a more sympathetic respray 🙂
@MonkeyShred2 күн бұрын
Definitely. It needs a slightly richer, deeper yellow I think. It either had gold or red lug lining too. I can’t quite see properly in the pictures I’ve found. Either could look good though

Hi mark , ive had a front wheel cocked off to one side in the past it was the fork legs , one was 5mm longer than the other , ive also straighten the ones on my bsa tour de france which was in a accident with a car , easy enough to do
@MonkeyShred2 күн бұрын
5mm longer on one side? Crazy! As much as I'd give it a good go - I'd rather let the professional have a look on this bike.
@carlwilliams63122 күн бұрын
That's fair comment , I just thought it might be something you could check yourself to find the problem with them , I hope you find it and I hope to see another video of the rebuild soon , good luck fella

That would be nice. The seatpost is a little tight fitting - seems like the chrome has expanded or got rough somehow.
